Meri Poppins is Singin’ in the Rain

I am so excited about today’s musical topic I can hardly contain myself. But I will for a sec.

It’s been the nicest (albeit hazy, rainy, cloudy) weekend. Here are the highlights, for my mom, and anyone else who cares…

-Photo shoot with man-go-round by his talented cousin in some of our favorite spots
-Playing in the kitchen making our first homemade bread crumbs (sad, I know)

Drop dead, bread

-Michaels dollar bins
-Trying tapioca pudding for the first time. Me likey!
-Sleeping in/ napping until noon today
-Birdy watching

Red headed woodpecker
Now I’m thinking about writing this blog, working a bit on Tropic of Cancer, and perhaps experimenting with some blueberry microwave pancakes (blueberries 2-for-1 at Cub! holla!)

Without further ado, I am so happy to introduce: MERI LOVES MUSICALS!

I know not everybody has love for musicals. Man-go-round can’t stand them. But I grew up watching my sister sing in them, spending afternoons at my best friend’s house watching and memorizing her Evita video, and getting excited and dressed up to go to the theater to shows like Les Mis and Mamma Mia.

It is so incredibly hard for me to pare these down, but I have to list some of my personal favorites.

***I chose some because they are silly:

-Shipoopi (The Music Man)
-Supercalifragilistic Expialidocious (Mary Poppins)
-America, F yeah- Team America (what, it’s a musical!)
-Springtime for Hitler (The Producers)
-Officer Krupke (West Side Story)
-”T” and “A” (why am I censoring this when my mom clearly knows the words from my sister playing this soundtrack repeatedly through my childhood) from A Chorus Line
-I wanna be like you- The Jungle Book
-Lonely Goatherd- Sound of Music (come on, yodeling?)

***I chose some because I like to sing them at the top of my lungs:

-When you’re good to mama- Chicago
-Master of the House- Les Mis
-Summer Nights- Grease
-Will you Light my Candle- Rent
-What’s New, Buenos Aires- Evita
-If I were a Rich Man- Fiddler on the Roof
-Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (God love Marilyn, I sure do)
-So Long, Farewell- Sound of Music (and now I get to sing along with my (not so) baby nieces as they have discovered this tune. My heart melts).
-Honey Bun- South Pacific

***Some are simply classics, you can’t mess with these for me:

-I Dreamed a Dream- Les Mis
-Singin’ in the Rain- Singin’ in the Rain
-Sisters, Sisters- White Christmas
-Edelweiss- Sound of Music
-Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina- Evita

Hmmm, so obvs this is heavy on the Evita and the Les Mis, as they are two of my faves. I haven’t included any Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Wicked, as I haven’t seen them. I excluded a LOT of Disney I could have had in there, but slippery slope…

What do you all think? Do you love musicals? or hate them? These songs get stuck in my head for daaaays, and I’m not sure I care at all.

Let me know your favorites, and maybe I can discover a few new tunes to shout from the rooftops sing quietly to myself in the kitchen.

I love musicals but am haven't seen that many of them. My favorite song on your list is "When You're Good to Mama" from Chicago – you can't not dance when you hear that song! :)

  2. Sophia @ Raven Waves says:

I love every single song from Grease! Best musical! Also, West Side Story has great tunes!

  3. Sarah the Writer says:

I love musicals! I can't really pick a favorite song. Or musical, for that matter. I've never seen Rent but it's on my "Must See" list. I am familiar with the song "Seasons of Love" (I think that's the name of the song).

Have you ever seen the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? It's really good! I can't remember any specific songs (despite seeing it twice within a six-month period) but I do recommend seeing it.

The Sound of Music, Mama Mia!, White Christmas, and Grease and Singin' in the Rain are all my favorites as well. My mind is blanking on others. Oklahoma!, Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, and West Side Story are also ones I would like to see.

I'm finally back and trying to catch up!

I LOVE musicals as well, but unfortunately I haven't seen too many.

My favorite more recent musical is RENT. Out Tonight is my favorite song from that because it's scandalous.

My favorite older one is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. it's an old western.

GASP, I've never seen Mamma Mia, Les Mis, OR Evita. I think I may be going to the musicals hades :(

Really? Where do I even begin to talk about musicals and their songs? Maybe I should just do a blog post?

I love the music from some of the show's I've seen, favorites being "Wicked", "Thoroughly Modern Millie", "Little Shop Of Horrors", "RENT", "Lion King", "Aida", "Billy Elliot", and "Les Mis".

Or shows I've been in… "Annie", "Grease", "Beauty and the Beast", "Peter Pan" to name a few.

And don't get me started on movie musicals!
So glad you like them as well (I say as I spin around and flash some snazzy jazz hands)!

This was a very fun blog for me to read from the nice weekend report and all the yummy foods to the musicals–I've always loved them! I grew up going to my sisters performances in High School too and then was in my first one (The Music Man) when I was in HS. I loved all musicals that I've seen on stage–Les Mis, Miss Saigon, Rent, Mama Mia, South Pacific, Cats, Evita and 42nd Street. However for some reason, now I remember that your dad and I didn't like The Producers very much. We had crummy seats and had trouble seeing the stage. I can't remember if I've seen any other musicals done professionally but even the children's plays or High School ones or community theater I always enjoy. Anyway, what a fun blog and I'm glad you have carried on the family tradition of loving musicals and singing the songs.

I think we were destined to be friends. I LOVE musicals. We watched them all the time when I was little. Absolutely LOVE me some Annie, "It's a Hard Knock Life", Oliver, pretty much anything from that movie, it was my favorite, and yes Team America counts as a musical, for sure. "We Need a Montage!". And Rent, love me all of Rent :)
Thanks for getting all of these stuck in my head this morning. Not a bad way to start a Monday morn!

I need a good sleep late and nap kind of day. Haven't had one in ages. I'm really not a big musical fan to be honest. Give me a ballet production and I'm a happy girl though.

  14. Annie says:

I LOVE musicals. Les Mis is my absolute favorite, I've seen it twice (once in London!). I've been performing in musicals since I was six years old, it was my life in high school. My little sisters and I still belt out songs form Les Mis, Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and any other play we are doing at the time.
Thanks for sharing your favorites… now I'm singing at work!

  20. Tara says:

I love…SOME musicals ;) I've seen a bunch but in general I usually like the newer ones better. Rent, Aida, Wicked…I do love Fiddler and Kiss me Kate is okay but I'm not big on the random filler songs in a lot of the older musicals, I guess.

  21. Kate Schad says:

Drop dead bread! Hilarious. I love that you remember Tits and Ass. Soooooo amazing and dear to my heart that song is, but you know that!

Ok people, I love, I dreamed a dream, I have a castle on a cloud (les mis)

Happy Talk from South Pacific. I know all the tunes from South Pacific and Brigadoon from being in those musicals in high school. Wash that man" and "honey bun" Don't forget my first infamous line, "the boat, the boat" fallin n my mama's footsteps with, The wells fargo wagon is coming!" Is that right? R.I.P. Father Christopher Trussell. The best H.S. Musical Director St. Cloud could ever score! I don't know how we managed to luck out there. Let's see, I love all of Chicago, Evita, Rent, Mama Mia (you failed to mention, and that was your 19th birthday present). What else… oh You are 16…always fun to change up the words on that one! Adam and I do that all the time. Weirdos!

    Signing off. xoxoxo

I LOVE musicals. my dad used to take the family when we were younger. my fav childhood one was damn yankees…"whatever lola wants, lola gets!" i think at that age i was just fascinated with all the stage prop changes…and was later disappointed when others didn't have many changes! haven't been to any recently…
as for the 5-leaf clover, i'm curious as to what that could mean?! the record was a 14-leaf clover!

I LOVE musicals. Wicked is my favorite, by far. You must see it the next time it's in Minneapolis at the Orpheum. It's so great. Phantom's another favorite too. Surprisingly, I haven't seen Evita or Les Mis. Hmmm.

  25. Jessie says:

I read wicked a few years ago and have been dying to see the musical. I really hope I get to asap! Great post!

Love, love, LOVE musicals! Right now I'm all about Hairspray. Is it super lame that I put on the DVD with subtitles, skip from song to song, and sing and dance in the living room? I also like to sing along to the musical episode of Buffy and the Vampire Slayer ("…or maybe miidgeeets")
