With the soon returning show, “Dallas,” and the hit show “Nashville” already well into it’s first season, I got to thinking about how many shows happen to be titled with the city they take place in… (for simplicity’s sake, I’m focusing only on the United States for now, but please share any international shows in the comments if you have ‘em!)
- Dallas (the original and the remake)
- Nashville (ABC, currently on the air)
- Portlandia (love this)
- Boston Legal (I think this show has ended)
- Boston Public (aha! remember this one?)
- Miami Vice
- Good Morning Miami (about 10 years back… not memorable)
- Las Vegas (older show, not to be confused with…)
- Vegas (current show)
- Laguna Beach (back before the bajillion spinoffs)
- Reno 911 (I never watch this anymore- is it still on?)
- Hawaii 5-0 (again, the original AND the remake)
- Chicago Fire (current show)
- Chicago Hope (I’m pretty sure this was a TV show…)
- It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
- Providence (I don’t know what this is, my mom used to watch it)
- Beverly Hills 90210 (again, the original and the remake… is nothing new?)
- Long Island Medium
And how about movies? this list could go on for a looong time…
- Leaving Las Vegas
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Feeling Minnesota (yay! the homeland! but this movie is hella stupid)
- Milwaukee, Minnesota (its a double!)
- The Philadelphia Story
- Philadelphia
- Mystery, Alaska
- Chicago
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and all of the sequels)
- Raising Arizona
- Sleepless in Seattle
- Sweet Home Alabama
- Meet me in St. Louis
- Pearl Harbor
- Troop Beverly Hills
- Beverly Hills Cop
- Beverly Hills Chihuahua
- Mr. Smith goes to Washington
Have you ever noticed this trend? Can you think of shows (U.S. or worldwide) that I forgot? Does your hometown or home state have representation?
Meri
Philadelphia (Tom Hanks movie)
Fargo
Gangs of New York
Good Morning, Vietnam
When in Rome
Australia (mmm … Hugh Jackman)
Wolf Creek
All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane (my city, yay!)
And then the lovely list thanks to the Olsen twins:
New York Minute
Winning London
Passport to Paris
I always find it funny when movies are specifically set in a certain city, but are filmed elsewhere. I have no idea why they do that. Like the movie Daybreakers (Ethan Hawke), it’s set in America but filmed in Brisbane (Australia)! It’s always fun when you recognise parts of your home town in movies!

Whoops, you already said Philadelphia. Sorry!

Do any of the Real Housewives franchises count? Half kidding/half serious…
But before the bajillion spinoffs, Laguna Beach was so good. Well season 1 anyway. I was on the fence when Kristen started narrating/center of the show.
I saw that Dallas in a TV ad here and it reminds me if my mom watching them when I was a kid. Now theres a remake.
I’ll have to watch the original to see if the new one compares at all
hawaii 5-0 REPRESENT! haha.
haha, you have one to be proud of!
You pretty much covered all the ones I could think of. Portlandia is so awesome. I watched a few of the new Dallas shows. Interesting. I remember the whole “who shot J.R.?” back in the ’80′s. It was such a big deal.
I love portlandia too- I’m partway through the second season on netflix. I want to go back and watch the original dallas!
What’s really interesting is that so many of these were filmed nowhere near the location portrayed in the film or series. The reason it’s always sunny in Philadelphia? Because it’s actually L.A.
haha, yep that sounds like hollywood
I love Sleepless in Seattle!
Do you like You’ve got mail too?
Looks like you got most of them! I LOVE Always Sunny! That show is hilarious.
I guess so. Though they will never name a movie after my town “Ottawa”. it would be the boringest movie, well, with cheating politicians apparaently, that’s what we’re known for lol
Oh god I’ve been getting the Dallas (original) DVDs from the library and it is SUCH an addictive show. lol. Yeah, I was just thinking about this location-based name thing a while ago. I kinda like it because it puts cities other than NYC and LA on the map. Like, how many foreigners would have cared about Dallas if not for the show, ya know?
that’s a good idea- I’ve only been watching the new one here and there but I bet the original is better!
ohmygosh, so true! i never really thought about it before, but now that you mentioned it, wow!
<3, Mimi
its funny, there aren’t really any shows named after minneapolis though, maybe one day!
The woman in the new Dallas show kind of creeps me out, for no particular reason.
which one, rebecca?
Movie: Bull Durham…Kevin Costner, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. –Made in my hometown–Durham.
