Choc Talk

Hi all! Happy Tasty Tuesday!

Eeep! In a fiendish, PMS driven frenzy, I finished off Man-go-round’s Christmas m&ms before he ever got a single one. As we left our house to run some errands, I scanned my quick mental files for “chocolate fix,” to see what I could come up with.

Luckily, I had already bought a bag of m&ms as “reserve” earlier today, so my head was fairly clear. But as I wandered down the aisles at Lunds, I got to thinking. Not all chocolate is created equally. I think, though we may not all agree on what the best chocolate is, we can at LEAST agree that some are better than others.

And this is my blog, so tonight you’re going to hear which kinds of chocolate I like! So which “choc”s walk the walk, and which merely talk the talk? A list!

Talk the Talk Choc (a.k.a. not my cup of tea)

  • chocolate cake. Yep, sorry. I had to start off with a controversial one. I actively dislike chocolate cake. That includes red velvet, yes even though it is pretty, it’s chocolate…
  • malted chocolate/ chocolate shakes/chocolate ice cream. Well, I don’t like shakes at all, but I can’t stand the whoppery taste of malted milk balls or malt cups or chocolate milkshakes.
  • Reese’s PB cups. While Reese’s Pieces are on my favorite list, I have a sensory issue with the blob of peanut butter “stuff” in Reese’s cups. I’ll eat them, but I have to be desperate for chocolate. Sometimes I just eat the chocolate from around the PB.
  • Dove promises. Do they still make these? They taste good enough, but the cheesy messages leave a bad taste in my mouth…
  • white chocolate.Β Barf.

Walk the Walk Choc (the cure for all that ails you)

  • chocolate chips. The holy grail. I prefer them kept in the fridge or freezer. Tollhouse Semi sweet is best (I’m just going to assume I prefer these because of momma’s pantry growing up).
  • m&ms. In order, the hierarchy is (favorite to least favorite): plain, almond, coconut, dark chocolate, peanut butter, peanut, pretzel. I’ve tried a few other wacky limited time offer kinds, but this is my general list.
  • brownies. Even the bad ones are so good… so good. I always end up with a tummyache because I eat 17 of them.
  • chocolate pudding.Β Only the instant or pudding cup varieties though, not the kind with the skin. blech.
  • straight up. dark chocolate bars from plain Hershey’s to fancy schmancy sea salt and chili powder goat cheese chocolate. When all else fails, a square or two of plain old chocolate mainlined into my aorta fixes all of life’s little traumas.

What about you chocoholics? What is your favorite medium for chocolate? Any kinds of chocolate you detest? Have I offended anyone with my abhorrence of chocolate cake?

Choc on!

I like red velvet cake, because it has cream cheese frosting. Red velvet is the only acceptable medium for cream cheese frosting.

    • Meri says:

See, I don’t like cream cheese frosting either… (gasp) so for me there is no redeeming quality to red velvet. I do like vanilla cake with chocolate frosting though haha!

  2. I like all except dark chocolate. I’ll eat it when I have to but I avoid it as much as possible. I just don’t like the taste.

I’m with you on Reese’s: I’m obsessed with the Pieces but could take or leave the cups.

M&Ms: I am OBSESSED with M&Ms! I prefer plain but I also like PB and pretzel.

I like how you consider chocolate chips to be the holy grail. Very, very true.

  3. April says:

Mmm, I like most chocolate. Chocolate in Europe, even the shitty kind, is always better.

  4. Libby says:

Almost every single item in your not your cup of tea column is my fav type of chocolate, except for white chocolate. Ditto the barf on that one. I also like dark chocolate, brownies and pudding as you do. I must also add, hot cocoa and pretzel m&m’s to my most recent favorite types of chocolate.

  5. Yum to the Toll House semi-sweet chocolate chips kept in the freezer.
Also, Dove chocolates with toffee bits and almonds. I do like the corny notes on the inner wrapper of these.
Chocolate with nuts are my fav. None of the fruity, white yucky filling or mystery weirdness of some boxed chocolates. Grams’ haystacks at Christmastime are the best. Turtles are the terrific! I’ve worked on developing a taste for dark chocolate recently and then I can tell myself they’re healthy too. But yuck to carob.

  6. TexaGermaNadian says:

Love me some M&Ms and any kind of dark chocolate. Thanks, now you have me craving! lol. Hope you had a great Christmas and very happy New Year. Here is to a great start to 2012!

  7. Ada says:

I like all except for dark chocolate too. Not liking chocolate cake? Yikes, I can’t imagine! I do however dislike red velvet cake as well. Glad to see you’re a brownie fan!

  8. I totally gave in to the demands of my uterus the other day and ate almost half a pan of brownies… at least they were the kind made with pumpkin instead of oil and eggs! πŸ˜‰

  9. Errign says:

Reeses cups & Lindt dark with sea salt are my FAVORITES. I can do without malted milk balls, white chocolate, cold chocolate, plain m&ms (but peanut & peanut butter are a-okay with me)….

  10. Cindy says:

you know, I’ve had 2 bars of Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bars since Thanksgiving and I haven’t craved it all..

    wierd.

but let’s see…chocolate cake is just a vehicle for the chocolate frosting (and only if it’s dark and rich)
I actually love whoppers but don’t count that as chocolate.

I actually LOVE reeses pb cups for not for the chocolate wow, sound like a broken record I do!

dove’s are good, not the best but good and white chocolate if I am in the mood but don’t ever seek it out. kinda like last resort sort of nibbling.

and YES toll house semi sweet chocolate chips are the bomb. easy peasy, chocolate fix taken care of.

my relationship with chocolate is a total mood thing (like what about me ISN”T a mood thing?)
so it depends but I’d have to say chocolate mint anything always is a joy and that chocolate with sea salt is a close second.

    xooxoxxo
    MMM

    • Meri says:

Chocolate mint is the end all of chocolate deliciousness (or any deliciousness) I think! York peppermint patties and York bites are the best!

  11. Kate says:

I have to agree with Libby on this one. I too like almost everything in the talk the talk column. I only like white chocolate in macademia nut cookies. Otherwise it can go to hell! πŸ™‚

To add to the list I love Chocolate covered pretzels. mmmmmm! I also love hot cocoa with whip cream on top or mounds of marshmallows.

Remember Neopolitan Icecream?? I don’t know if they have that anymore. I love the mixture of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. It always seemed that the chocolate got eaten first in our house.

Oh oh and tag-along cookies. I could eat a whole box in one sitting.

I also love hersheys. Especially in a smore. Oh how I miss summer! Just might have to make one in my microwave for kicks soon. I’ve heard of people doing that in the fireplace at home. Oh wait, I think that was our family, once upon a time, during a miserably cold winter.

In conclusion, Chocolate is the best. I think we could all use a little more chocolate. Now I gotta go find some! xoxo

  12. I’m not a fan of m&m or reese… or hersheys… but I could eat those ferro rochers and turtles all day! or any dark dark chocolate really! hmm. this makes me want to go into my kitchen and eat some leftover christmas chocolate for breakfest now!

  13. Alyssa says:

I would swap red velvet for m&ms and pudding. I absolutely love red velvet! I don’t mind chocolate cake, but its a very rare occurrence. Oh and big NAY to chocolate ice cream.

My favorite mediums for chocolate are hot chocolate, truffles (especially Lindt), red velvet, and brownies!

  14. Simply Life says:

    I can’t think of a chocolate I don’t like!
