Dessert and Desert

Just after my surgery, I was being very deliberate about how much protein I was getting. At least while my muscles and cells were recovering and recouping, I wanted to pump it up a little bit. Annie’s tofu scrambles, fried eggs, greek yogurt, beans and more were all over my fridge and pantry.

Along with my typical protein-y goods, I bought a few items that usually wouldn’t come within ten feet of my kitchen- protein shakes/ smoothies.

I discovered a brand that was pretty benign with a nice ten grams of protein in a bottle, Mix. It didn’t even remotely resemble the nasty Ensure’s and Muscle Milks of days of yore. But alas, it is still a smoothie, and I’m not much of a juice/ smoothie fan. I figured, though, that if I made it into a “slush,” I could eat it with a spoon and it might be less of a textural problem for me.

So I threw it in my food processor with some ice cubes and vanilla. I figured I’d end up with a sort of frozen treat.

What’s that you say? It looks like whipped cream? Well in fact, that’s exactlyΒ what it turned into. I’m not sure if these smoothies are made with whey protein or something, but man did it whip itself into a frenzy! It about quadrupled in size, making my little “dessert” quite larger and frothier than expected.

Nonetheless, it was pretty fun to eat. It was also a fun kitchen experiment and an excuse to use my food processor. Next time I’m not sure it would be worth the cleanup, and I might just gag down the smoothie instead, but for this time it was fun!

Now, onto the Sugarbowl:

It was CLOSE, but Reese’s won, and Snickers are now out of the running…

Next up:

Skittles vs. Licorice/ Twizzlers

Come on and Rock the Vote! Have you ever had a funny science experiment like this in the kitchen? Do you ever use smoothies to make dessert concoctions?

We’re off to the desert in the morning, but I’ll likely be posting some Sugarbowl antics from there, so stay tuned!

Meri

  1. No Snickers, no….

Skittles better win this round, I’ll cry if they don’t…

  2. Woo-hoo – go Reese’s! Hands down, I vote for Skittles. One of my two favorite fruity candies (the other being Starburst).

    Definitely twizzlers.

I do weird things in the kitchen all the time…sometimes with really unexpected results! It usually ends up being icky when that happens tho…

I like to find out, even if it doesn’t work out. In this case, I ended up making it again on purpose today, but I knew what to expect this time.

  8. Melanna says:

Twizzlers! I hope you know I’m totally addicted to voting and I realize I’m totally cutting this close for when you may next post. But I’m always sad when I miss a vote. I clearly have no life.

  9. Ada says:

Skittles! I think Twizzlers are disgusting. πŸ™

Your dessert experiment sounds pretty interesting. But yeah, those food processors can be such a pain to clean!!

    • Meri says:

I have two of the same processor, in small and large, and I pretty much bought them on purpose so that they would be the easier to clean ones!

  10. Stephanie says:

    Twizzlers….makes mouths happy. πŸ™‚

    Have fun in AZ!!!

  11. Kristina says:

Hmmm… I love licorice but I hate Twizzlers… so think I’m gonna have to go with Skittles on this one.

  12. Cindy says:

I get whey protein in my jamba juice smoothies sometimes and it fluffs up the smoothie A LOT so now I ‘m thinking that would be fun to experiment with whey and see if you can make fluffy type stuff…

    oh, and SKITTLES!!!

  13. Simply Life says:

tough call- I’d say they’re really a tie but if I had to pick one it would be twizzlers!

  14. Amber says:

I am so confused…why did that product whip up like that? I would have been dialing the number on the back so quick! hhaaha but I’m glad it made it more fun to eat – food should be fun! And nutritious!

I’m not entirely sure if it was the whey protein, the ice, or how long I mixed it to crush all of the ice, but it was like meringue consistency!
