It’s not easy being green beans

Yep, that’s a spoiler. The results are in from round one of April’s March “Munch Madness” tourney, a.k.a. Fruits vs. Veggies. Thanks to everyone who is playing along, I’m very nerdily excited about this little game and I couldn’t do it without voters!

In the veg corner, Asparagus beat Green Beans 24-13, and in the fruit fight Pineapple bested the humble Mango winning 22 votes to 13

I’ve got a little consolation prize for you Mango lovers, but first I give you round two in the great debate:

Fight One:
Squash (all varieties from summer to spaghetti to butternut etc) and zucchini
vs.
Pumpkin (so maybe it’s a fruit. I’m calling it a veggie because it tastes like a veggie and I hate science)

Fight Two:
Pear
vs.
Apple

Place your votes!

Now, even though Mangoes didn’t win the glory, I still have to show them some love. It just so happens that a few days ago I picked up this Champagne Mango from the co-op. I had never had this variety before, so I wanted to give it a try.

Choose one that gives slightly when you grip it

Cut off the “cheeks” first, and then pare the remaining section

I hedgehog it, so that I can do this…

I then cut the remaining fruit off of the pit and peel, and gnaw on the extra
pieces lest none go to waste. Some people are allergic to the pit though, FYI.

If you don’t eat half of it while you cut it, you end up with a lot more than this
So how was the Champagne Mango? Perhaps the sweetest Mango I’ve ever tasted. Perhaps I just happened upon a perfectly ripe one, or perhaps they are just an elite form of the fruit.

For all of you out there who chose Asparagus or Pineapple, what is your favorite way to use them?

Place your votes in today’s match, I can’t wait to see what you think!

And come back tomorrow for something a bit more carb-a-licious!

Zucchini! Though, I'm a little confused. Where I live a butternut is a type of pumpkin.

Oh, and definitely apple. Pear is foul :/

I didn't vote on the last round, but my favourite way to cook asparagus is to bundle a few stalks together, line them with halved cherry tomatoes and a sprig of rosemary, then wrap them in proscuitto. Pop them in the oven with slices of lemon on top and a drizzle of oil. Delish! (Just make sure you remove the rosemary before you eat it).

    x Jasmine

  2. Meri says:

Oh that recipe sounds really good, Jasmine- except I don't eat meat. Man-go round would like it though! I wonder what I could wrap them in. Hmm maybe puff pastry?

  3. Robin says:

    Zucchini & apple!!!!

    PS this is awesome!

  4. Robin says:

Also. I agree with that puff pastry comment. Sounds superb!

  5. Ada says:

Torn on the veggie vote . . . again, but zucchini and apple get my vote!

  6. Sarah the Writer says:

I'm a bit of a picky eater who doesn't like many fruits and veggies (although more fruits than veggies), but this one was easy: pumpkin and apple. Have you ever tried pumpkin cookies or pumpkin bread? It's delicious!

  7. yummychunklet says:

Yum! The mango looks good. I'm jealous that you're in a good co-op!

  8. Mandiee says:

I just found your blog and think your food battle idea is so fun! In the veggie corner, squash wins for me hands. down. Kabocha is my absolute favorite food, and I have love the versatility of zucchini as well. Pears are great, but I think I have to give the fruit win to apples. I would eat at least 5 a day if I could (unfortunately organic apples are expensive. boo.)

    Have a lovely day!

This is such a funny idea!! I can't wait for my vote to be counted! I am going with squash (butternut squash soup = the very best) and apples (I like the taste of pears better but apples are so versatile!)

Thanks for shopping by so I could find your blog!

    xoxo your newest follower 🙂

  10. Christianna says:

It's the two P's for me. Pumpkin, cause I like pumpkin bread, and muffins. And then Pear, cause they taste soooooooooooo good!

  11. angsarap says:

I'll vote for squash and apple

  12. kate says:

I'm all for zucchini! Yum! As for the fruits I'll go with pear. Nothing beats a nice ripe pear!

  13. Eric says:

    Squash and Zucchini

    Pear

Both of these foods I have recently steamed and pulverized for little Sylvia to try. She is a fan of Butternut Squash and she also liked Pears!

  14. Samantha says:

Squash (although isn't pumpkin with that family?) and Apple!

Champagne mangoes are normally super sweet even when not at their ripest.

Thanks for visiting my blog, I'd love if you followed! And don't forget to enter my giveaway! :o)

    Squash and apple!

  16. Heather Iacobacci-Miller says:

Totally going with squash and apple all the way no question 😉

  17. anowlsnest says:

Zucchini and apples for sure! Pears can be good if you find a good one but that seems to be more difficult than with an apple.

    That mango looks lovely!

While I voted mango I'd have to say my favorite pineapple experiences were in Uganda. I ate them allll the time – so fresh – so sweet – so unlike any pineapple I have ever tasted in the US. mmmmmmm!

  18. Twenty.Something says:

I want Mango right now… would be perfect for breakfast!

    Totally squash and apple!

Pumpkin! I love pumpkin, it's so tasty and it's a hard decision for the fruit! I would have to say apple though.

I love eating pineapple as it is, but I also love to bake with it. I had chosen green beans, but I also love asparagus I usually eat it in pastas.

    I love this game!
I'm so sad mango didn't win so thank you for sharing some extra mango love 🙂
My vote today goes for squash and pears!

  24. Alyssa says:

For veggies…Id say pumpkin since I only like one variety of squash. And pears for sure!

My mom makes this really awesome pineapple juice by cutting off the skin, and soaking it in (initially) boiling hot water, over night/a few days to get the full flavor. Then sweeten an voila!

  25. Cat says:

My vote goes for the squash (yum!) and the pear 🙂 Yeah for food fights 🙂

  26. Sophia @ Raven Waves says:

Squash and pear!! I love this food fight idea!! Yay for April Food Month!

  28. Steve says:

squash/zuchini for sure over pumpkin and I'll have to show my Minnesota pride and go with Apples (Honeycrisps (the state fruit) is my all time favorite) over pears.

  29. Tara says:

    Zucchini and Apples… both YUM!

  30. Melanna says:

    Pumpkin and Apple for sure.

  31. Terri says:

Oh, I like to steam and then marinate asparagus, then wrap a spear in thin sliced ham. Pineapple is best all by its lonesome, but up FRESH. It's fun to juice it too.

Now, my new votes: Pumpkin and pear.

  32. amy grace says:

squash/zucchini and apple!!! love them both. totally into apple, pecan, chicken, bleu cheese and dried cranberries in salad right now!! DELISH!

also, i really like mango. but i hate cutting it. i'll have to try your way next time – i usually just peel it first (which is verrrry slippery)!

  33. Ashley @ 365 things says:

OH that mango looks juicy and delicious. I'm terrible at picking ripe fruit!

  34. Stephanie says:

    Squash-pear

I know I'm late but wanted to show my love anyways! I abhor apples.
