A Message to you, Rudi’s

Bonus points if you know what tonight’s title comes from!

I’m back with more results from Munch Madness. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can see the bracket here. Shameless attempt at blog promotion coming…

C’mon- these are so cute you want to paste them on your own blog, right? 🙂

Last night’s contenders were Squash/Zucchini vs. Pumpkin for veggies, and Apple vs. Pear for fruits.

The winners are…

Zucchini/ Squash and Apples!

It was pretty much a landslide here (18-6 for both fruits and veggies races). Some of you mentioned that pumpkin is in the squash family. Indeed. I kind of wanted to separate it from the others since it’s sort of it’s own entity to me.

Also, thanks to all for contributing recipes- be sure to check the comments for descriptions of everything from homemade pineapple juice to prosciutto wrapped asparagus. Yum!

Now if anyone wants to share recipes or favorite ways to use yesterday’s competitors, I’m all ears! I suppose none of these are the MOST seasonal right now, but I can start to get excited about next fall’s pumpkin muffins, right?

Now…

It’s in the bag(el)!

PB and honey, cream cheese- tasty any way you make it!

What is my message for Rudy Rudi’s Organic Bakery? THANK YOU! You have resuscitated my ability to eat bagels thanks to your delicious, soft- pretzel-like, nutty and chewy bagels. Back in high school, I literally (I use this not like Rachel Zoe, but in the actual meaning of the word) ate a Cream cheese bagel and special K bar Every. Single. Day. for lunch. For a long time after that, I could barely look at a bagel without wanting to yak. I had some delicious bagels in Manhattan, but that was the extent of it for 5-6 years.

Now, thanks to Rudi’s, I’m ready to try some more and slowly reintroduce this food into my life. Sounds easy, right? Well, a  year or so ago I ate a refrigerator bagel and gagged. So this is a big step.

They also make dank breads. My favorite is the oat and nut. Whenever they are on sale, I buy it. They can be a bit pricey though.

So there’s some carb love for you. Are bagels a regular part of your diet? What do you put on them?

And TONIGHT’S VOTE is:

BROCCOLI vs. CAULIFLOWER
and
FIGS (fresh or dried) vs. DATES (fresh or dried)

Tonight will be the last “double header,” so from here on out it will be one competition a day until the finals.

Vote for your faves and share how you use them!

    Broccoli and figs.

I love bagels, but I'm picky about them.

  2. Lisa says:

This is so hard. I love all of them.
I don't know if I can pick, but my first instinct was broccoli and dates so I'll go with that!

  3. Steve says:

ill have to say cauliflower and figs (my dad's favorite and i don't want to be disowned)

  4. Sophia @ Raven Waves says:

Figs and cauliflower for me! 🙂

  5. emma. says:

You pick tough ones. Gosh. Cauliflower and figs, I think!

I'm pretty boring when it comes to bagels.. just cream cheese usually!

  6. Meri says:

I have to say, of all of the fruits in the whole bracket, dates vs. figs is the hardest for me. Maybe because they are the two very sweetest, even fresh, and I'm a super sweet tooth?

  7. yummychunklet says:

    Broccoli and fresh figs!

  8. Sam says:

wow! these sound so fun! brocolli and figs! 😀

  9. Christianna says:

I love cooked broccoli with butter and garlic, soooo yummy! And I'd have to say figs for the fruit, though I do wish I could get a date (too much?)

  10. Meri says:

hehe- that's funny, Christianna. It is never "too much" over at meri-goes-round… have you seen my titles and captions haha? You simply make my day is all.

  11. Jennifer says:

This is so much fun! I heart your theme this month =)

I vote for broccoli and also dates! =) though all are deeeeeelish!

    Broccoli and dates!

I eat broccoli in everything from pasta to salads. Steamed or roasted is my favorite!

And dates are the main ingredients of larabars which I eat every day. No explanation needed. 🙂

  13. penwhite says:

Cauliflower and dates although It's a very close call. My Mom used to make a DELICIOUS date chocolate cake that was sooooo yummy nummy and if cauliflower is just perfectly ripe you can't beat it! I'll have to try one of your bagels soon. Fun day today!

  14. kate says:

Some of my friends had a debate over broccoli vs cauliflower at a party once. It ended with Kent on the floor writhing in pain because Tyler shot him in the crotch with an air soft gun. I'm sure this competition won't come to that – but for what it's worth I'm going with broccoli. Also, I'm not into figs or dates but I guess dates win out for their reference in Indiana Jones movies.

  15. Meri says:

momma- It was a fun day- I enjoyed every single moment! I'm going to need that date cake. Too bad about the chocolate, maybe I could make a vanilla version? Hmmm.

Kate- I'm hoping this little "match" won't come to violence, but you never know… haha, thanks for the story!

  16. Minnesota Maven says:

This is a hard one. I think cauliflower, but I do love broccoli. Just not quite as much. Now I've actually never had a fig outside of a fig newton so it isn't a fair fight here. I'm going with dates. Cause I know how those taste.

  17. VildesVerden says:

Hmm, I must say cauliflower and broccoli as I dont like figs or dates

  18. Annabelle Fleur says:

Figs and brocolli! Love your blog and now following, maybe you'll have time to visit mine:)

brocolli! and i'm not choosing dates or figs…they are both all kind of wrong. xx

  20. blackhuff says:

Apples – Cook apples in water till soft. Place in oven proof little dishes and sprinkle with cinnamon. Add 50ml water in each dish. Bake for 30 min. Remove from oven. Cool off a bit and top with plain yogurt. Serve warm as a snack of dessert.

  21. angsarap says:

I will go for Broccoli and Figs

  22. shah wharton says:

Peanut butter on bagels and lemon juice on any vegetable! ;D

Thanks for popping by my blog today – Shah. X

  23. Stephanie says:

Good, traditional bagels from a bakery are amazing. Grocery store bagels are…not so much. My vote: BROCCOLI and DATES!

  24. Heather Iacobacci-Miller says:

My hubby loves bagels and really likes Thomas brand (made with a soy flour so they are high in protein). I'll say broccoli and figs.

  25. eliz@thesweetlife says:

I've never heard of Rudi's before–very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  26. Robin says:

    brocolli & figs!

  27. Meri says:

They are based out of Denver, Eliz- maybe they aren't really sold out your way? But i bet you have some better contenders out there- Favorite New York bagel place? I remember my "winner" was one somewhere north of midtown, perhaps on Lexington. I think it was a person's name. Lens? David's? Hmm, I can't remember, but it was pretty small.

  28. Megan says:

I don't like broccoli or cauliflower. I need to branch out a bit more in terms of what I eat!

    Have a great week!

    <3 Megan

  29. fitchickbritt says:

    Love, Vanilla

  40. Jennifer Fabulous says:

I used to eat bagels every weekend for years but then quit when I realized I was probably packing on the pounds because of it. Lol.

Hmmm…this is definitely a tough one again. I will have to go with cauliflower (its part of my favorite Indian dish!) and figs (because I like fig newtons, haha).

  41. Happy Homemaker UK says:

Try this again – I'd choose cauliflower and figs because they'd look pretty on a colored plate 🙂

  42. PB Addict says:

Broccoli and dates all the way 🙂
Good bagels are hard to come by! I loved ones I had in NY too, and Montreal bagels are pretty tasty.

  43. Simply Life says:

    yum! that bagel looks great!

  44. Melanna says:

Broccoli and Dates. I don't typically eat dates or figs, but dates are in my sticky toffee pudding recipe and it's super yummy. So they get to win.

  45. Tara says:

I'm late on this but I'm posting anyway!

definitely broccoli – I roast it with some EVOO, S & P and chopped garlic. Delicious! Cauliflower is all right but a bit too blah for me.

and I don't know about dates vs. figs! I've only ever had dried dates and fresh figs (I don't really count fig newtons, haha) but I do love me some fresh figs.
