Satur-date

Greetings friendlings! Tonight I’ll be raving about my favorite day of the week- Saturday! Stay on the lookout for the bolded items- some of my favorite parts about Saturdays!

This particular Saturday started out the way they should… sleeping in until after 11. Holla. Thenceforth, man-go-round and I hit another of my favorite stops, the library. I got Undeclared, Good Eats, The Bounty Hunter, and some lovely chick-lit to read!

We left, and man-go-round was hungry, so we went exploringΒ until we found this eatery “The Grand Sandwich.”

Reuben dog, sodas

When we got home, I decided to tackle a recipe I’ve been talking about for a few days, thanks to one of my favorite bloggers who has the most incredible recipes and food photos.

So off I went, after commandeering a few of man-go-round’s neglected stone fruits (two plums and a nectarine…) to make some dried fruit/ fruit chips!

fruits, sliced as thinly as I could sans mandolin...

While they baked, I decided to channel my inner domestic goddess. I cleaned in pearls.

Voila! Clean sink! Anyone see the face in this picture from the drains and rag?

After cleaning the sink and counters, and filling our new wine rack, and checking the mail, the chips were not done. So we turned the oven off to let the chips finish while we went on a photo walk:

By the time we finished checking out all of the flowers and birdies, and had our fill of late day sunshine, guess what was ready?

before/after

Yea! They were not as dried out as I wanted them to be, since I wasn’t able to slice them very thin. They were, however, deLICIOUS! Even man-go-round, who doesn’t generally adventure in his eating, thought they were pretty good!

We’re having a relaxing night enjoying Undeclared, and the icing on today’s cupcake? I got to see my story that was published for the first time post-production!

Well, I counted over a dozen great things about this Saturday, and the night is still young.

What do you do on your happy, relaxing weekend days? Do you like to explore or stay home and relax?

Cheers!

Meri

Those dried fruits look SO amazing! I’ve got to give them a try! And yay for an awesome Saturday!

  2. Raymund says:

I love going to out like malls, parks, beaches and cooking more intricate meals that I cannot do on a busy day.

    • Meri says:

I definitely agree about making the recipes that take too long for a weeknight! I love to experiment in the kitchen on the weekends πŸ˜‰

  3. oomph says:

i imagine those chips to be very yummy! i love to be out and about on the weekends…great to come home after a fullfilling day.

if i didn’t have the minis, i’d love to explore more….

Dude, Undeclared was great, have you already seen Freaks and Geeks? You probably know this but Freaks and Geeks was such an amazing show and I think the reason Judd Apatow was awesome and became the it thing but has since churned out too many mediocre movies. Also the chalk on the stairs reminds me of something you’d probably appreciate. During one of the last torrential rains I saw the best urban waterfall on como flowing down the long concrete stairs kinda by that monastery (I think that’s what it is anyway). So much water… I should have photo’d it but I was sweating the intermittent hail.

    • Meri says:

I’ve only seen a handful of freaks and geeks episodes, but that was what made me pick up undeclared at the library yesterday! We watched about 4 in a row last night, cracking up at Amy Poehler and this one girl who is also in Californication, the girl with the boyfriend. I wish I had seen the waterfall you saw- the rain lately has been nuts and I never seem to have my camera! Or when I do, and its raining, then its night…

i think you need a sharper knife, meri. my 5-year-old nephew can and does slice fruit thinner than that.

    • Meri says:

Ahh- but you see the problem wasn’t the knife, it was how overripe the plums were- any thinner and it wouldn’t just been water haha!

  6. ahhh i’m so happy that you made them! yes, they need to be pretty thin to get them “chip” like. wow, i feel so honored that your man-go-around liked them too :). thanks for the shoutout meri!

    • Meri says:

The nectarines were definitely easier than the overripe plums, which turned more into prune jerky. It was still tasty to me though πŸ™‚

  7. Mmmm the grand sandwich looks and sounds like a YUMMY place! Okay time to go get some food.

    • Meri says:

I liked that they had veggie and vegan dogs too, and not just typical hot dogs. A girls gotta eat, right?

      • You knew I was vegan??? U must be sneaking on me.

        • Meri says:

I didn’t know! but now I do muah ha ha ha! I was a vegetarian my whole life until a few years ago, when I started eating shrimp and scallops. I’ve also tried salmon (not a fan) and sole and halibut (more of a fan). Now I feel like the world is my “oyster” hehe. But I still get excited about vegetarian and vegan spins on things since most days I’m pretty close to vegan.

Yay for bottled Fanta πŸ™‚ On my weekends I like a mixture of chillin’ and exploring- I love going to nearby towns with my family or friends and checking out the scene (aka the FOOD)

  9. Stephanie says:

The dried(ish) fruit is lovely! I love the photo walk pictures. J and I went on a photo walk on the beach yesterday, and between the two of us, we took 241 mediocre pictures. Gah!

  10. Well, that all sounds lovely! I ended up going over to my little brother and his wife’s house. We had a party, made Southern food. Then we played games, which turn into some drinking games…

    • Meri says:

Nice- haven’t played any “true” drinking games in awhile. More like “when don draper gives someone a disgusted look, drink some beer,” or other made up things the boyfriend and I do πŸ™‚

  11. Bonnie says:

I love your comment about the pearls most of all. Usually when I live the domestic life, I’m in sweats or boy shorts, and I look disgusting. I applaud you for keeping your sense of style. πŸ™‚

    • Meri says:

Boyfriend was just appalled that not only was I wearing the pearls, but a dress he particularly likes. I just wanted to quick clean the sink while the fruit baked! Not clean the whole house!

  12. kimbirdy says:

that sounds like my sunday! the perfect mix of getting stuff done and relaxing around the house. saturdays used to be my alone time + hanging out with friends, but now i work on saturday afternoons/evenings. no matter what day it falls on, i think everyone should set aside a sacred day each week to just enjoy life. it’s so very necessary!

    • Meri says:

Totally- again today, I didn’t get out of bed until noon. Then I plugged away at stuff for 4-5 hours, and now I’m cooking and relaxing again! That’s the life!

  13. I like to go out and stay in to relax. It really depends on my mood. I find with the heat, I’ve been inside more. And, I love exploring when it’s cooler out because it’s the perfect excuse to stop for hot apple cider!

    • Meri says:

There is something about exploring in the fall… boots, sweaters, hot coffee, scarves… hot cinnamon rolls… only on a day this hot would I be waxing poetic about something signifying the end of summer!

  14. Really love the ‘tackle a recipe’ idea! I need to start doing those at least once every few weeks. Would be so fun! Let’s see, I love Saturdays for rando movie watching on TV. It is almost too hot here to do anything, so I have been catching up on my bad movies. And man, are there lots of them out there, haha

  15. Marissa says:

Glad to hear you had such a nice Saturday! That Reuben dog and the fruit chips both look absolutely delicious. Now I need a snack… πŸ™‚

    • Meri says:

I just had the best yellow pepper of my life a few minutes ago- summer really is the time for good eats and good snacks isnt it?

  16. sophia says:

Oh that is a tough question…though I love exploring, sometimes I just want to stay home and do a glorious nothing. Like yesterday, I spent half my day, well more than that, sleeping.

  17. penny says:

I get a chuckle out of reading the comments from so many people who say they have been staying in so much watching movies etc. with the hot weather. I guess when you get older you are more desperate! I’ve been out in this heat ALOT

    • Meri says:

Some days I have less tolerance for the heat, now that we have central air here. but it does definitely help to know that I can come home to it, and take a nice cool shower!

  18. What a GREAT Saturday…there’s nothing like enjoying your favorite day of the week, doing exactly what you choose to do. πŸ˜‰

I totally saw the sink face…ha ha!

  19. penny says:

Oops, that wasn’t the end of my comment. Anyway, I’ve been golfing 3 times this week in close to 90 degree weather and much humidity. I have to say once you are in it and all sweaty you don’t care so much. It is when you are all cleaned up and want to be out for a few minutes and then you feel all yukky right away that it stinks! Literally! Today Dad and I had just showered after golf and then went out to the lake. We were doing some very light tasks outside and I had to stop and sit under the fan in the air conditioning for at least an hour to cool down. Crazy hot!

  20. I definitely like staying busy. Unfortunately, my wknds lately have been pretty boring. I need to step it up though soon! It’s SUMMER! Gotta take advantage of it!

  21. Jasmine says:

Congratulations on your story publication!!! How exciting!!!

Love the idea of fruit chips. Healthy and delicious.

  22. Kristin says:

A reuben dog??? Be still my heart!
