I was singing today to our tree, as man-go-round put our new star (code name: “glitter bomb”) on top. I started with “O Christmas Tree” and moved onto the more traditional, “O Tannenbaum.”
Me being me, I started to laugh at the name Tannenbaum. It made me think of all of the other silly sounding holiday words there are. So what do I do, being the nerd I am?
Make a list, of course!
Yule laugh at these Goofy Seasonal Words and Expressions:
- Tannenbaum. What on earth is a Tannenbaum? Well, its a Christmas tree, basically. In German. But its exponentially more fun to say, right?
- Mistletoe. Okay, I know this is just the name of the plant. But its funny!
- Figgy Pudding. No mysterious meaning on this one either, but tell me you don’t love to sing this verse of “We wish you a Merry Christmas.”
- Yule. I just like the long “u.” I’m a simple person.
- Eggnog. Makes me think of a noggin every time.
- Wassailing. I’ve been wondering about this one for years. Last year, I explored what it means and where it comes from.
- tinsel. Not so much silly, just fun to say.
- Ebeneezer Scrooge. Has there ever been another soul named Ebeneezer? It’s a ridiculous name! Best pronounced with crazy eyes and a six-second third syllable… “Ebeneeeeeeezer Scrooge!” When done right, your voice might crack on the “Scrooge” as well.
What do you think are the funniest holiday words? Do you have any to add to my list?
