pa-shunned fruit

It might be getting late, but its still Tuesday where I am. Still tasty Tuesday, that is. Although for this week’s episode, I regret to inform you that things did NOT turn out very tasty after all…

Not too long ago, I saw a bin of passion fruit on sale at the co-op. Passion fruits on sale? What on earth? The reason I had never had one before are because… they are never on sale in Minnesota! But now that they were, what better time to try them…

So I did a quick wiki search on my smart phone to figure out how to pick a ripe one…

dark purple, a bit tender, with a seam down the side. Ripe!

A few days later, I cut it open and scooped out the seeds, ready to try it:

Look how pretty it is!

As I scooped the seeds out, a wonderful, fruity, distinct and familiar scent filled the air. I was now anxiously anticipating the first taste!

poured atop a dish of greek yogurt

but ohhhh no… I brought the dish to the couch, and man-go-round and I dug in.

I am sad to report that despite the delicious fragrance, we were NOT passionate for passion fruit. Too tart even for a whole dish of plain yogurt, not my favorite consistency, and since I opted to keep seeds in rather than sieve them, this “dessert” was barely edible. It didn’t even get finished 🙁

I’m not saying I won’t ever try it again, but perhaps in a sauce… or a smoothie… diluted.

Have you ever been really excited to try a new food, then utterly let down by the reality of it? Do you eat passion fruit or have a way to make it more tasty?
