That’s right… award season is just around the corner, and so I thought for this Wordy Wednesday I’d sound off on a particular segment of pop culture, and give away some MERI awards!
What is the category for tonight’s nominations?
Best Supporting TV Character!
Sure, we all get drawn in by magnetic and enigmatic LEAD television personalities, and even villains… but what about those fabulous supporting roles that round out the show so well, and dare I say even OUTSHINE the main characters from time to time?
Let’s give them some love tonight! Here are my picks (to keep things under control I’m only doing shows currently on the air):
2 Broke Girls: it’s a tie between Oleg (who knew I could laugh and gag at the same time?) and Han, both from the diner. CBS PLEASE PUT THIS SHOW BACK ON YOUR WEBSITE.
Glee’s Coach Beast. Sure, we all love us some Sue Sylvester and Brittany, but Beast definitely keeps things interesting…
Up All Night’s Eva. Sure, she’s kind of a main character, but I laugh so hard every time Maya Rudolph does anything. It’s hard to outshine Gob Bluth Will Arnett’s character, (as well as Christina Applegate and Jason Lee) but she is way funnier.
The New Girl’s Winston. Ever since the bell choir episode, I can’t stop laughing every time I see him on screen. This show really grew on me.
Hart of Dixie’s Lemon. At first I thought, “oh dread, Jamie King is underserved in her role and does a despicable southern accent.” But then, slowly… something happened. I realized her wardrobe is awesome, and I can’t stop watching this show. Yep, I nominated her for her fabulous southern belle wardrobe.
Are you there Chelsea’s Olivia (the best friend), Dede (the roommate) and Sloan (the real Chelsea Handler). I just started watching this show, and although I love Donna Pinciotti as much as the next girl, the supporting characters absolutely carry this show. Chelsea Handler I could have guessed (she plays “chelsea’s” snooty sister Sloan) but the roommate and petite best friend character are hilarious.
What supporting or cameo TV characters do you think shine above their main character counterparts? Who would be on your list if it were extended beyond currently airing shows? (Fred Mertz anyone??)
Meri

Lots of shows I haven’t got a chance to see yet but and excited to, I haven’t even heard of the Chelsea show. Sounds interesting. So my vote will have to go for Coach Beast, since she is the only one I really know about! Plus I really do love Coach Beast. I cried during the episodes where she was getting bullied and when they made it up to her. Good cheesy stuff!
I want more Meri awards!
well then I will make more Meri awards!
Jimmy Palmer and Fornell on NCIS! Every once in a while on Twitter, fans try to get a Trending Topic to encourage NCIS producers to add Jimmy to the opening credits. Which they should. I actually thought they were going to this season. And Fornell and Gibbs together is just complete awesomeness every time.
Amy Farrah Fowler on the Big Bang Theory. I know she’s a series regular now but I’ve loved her from the beginning. She just seems to fit right in. Plus, I’m glad that they’re giving Penny some girlfriends.
To be honest, though, just about all the shows I watch are ensemble shows. Including Glee. Everyone from each cast shines, including supporting characters who are part of the main cast.
I really like ensemble casts too- there are so many interesting characters that way!
Love this idea and I totally agree about Winston! He’s amazing!
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
tv??
huh?
boy I got out of touch fast!
I can watch Firefly because my teenager left me with his dvd’s.
I’ve seen the whole season 3 times now!
wanna talk cowboy sci fi give me a call!
xooxxo
Out of all of those shows, I only watch Glee. And I love Coach Beast, but I think that the show has gone down a bit in quality this year. I actually stopped watching their Christmas special because it was so dull.
I love when you do these! I absolutely love Coach Beiste! I loved the epiosde when she sand “Jolene.”
I LOVE FRED MERTZ!!!! I Love Lucy is by far, one of my favorite TV shows of all time 🙂
