A to ZZ Top

On the eve of this most wonderful of holidays (Yes, April Fools Day is a holy day, aka holiday, to me…), I also bring music month to a close.

It’s been fun and all, but I have something planned for April that I am SO excited about, that I’m okay with moving on. And that’s no joke.

the best April Fools theme picture I’ve seen yet

For this final post, I thought I’d run through an alphabetical list of some of my favorite bands throughout the years. Some were favorites at certain pivotal times in my life, and some are lifetime loves. Enjoy!

A Atmosphere, from high school until present
B Beatles, for obvs. Bowie, my husband. Blink 182 (junior high) Bon Jovi (ninth grade) Beck. Love!
C Coldplay (at the precise moment I first heard “yellow.” that song is so pretty.) The Cure (I’m pretty sure I wrote a poem to Robert Smith in high school? oh the shame…) Chuck Berry- for ever. Camera Obscura- discovered after college some time.
D Dylan, fo life. Destiny’s Child (ninth grade) David Gray (high school) Dixie Chicks (junior high)
E Easy-E (junior high) Everclear (junior high and high school)
F Fatboy Slim! Remember “She’s all that”?
G Green Day (middle school) Go-gos (junior high)
H Hanson- childhood! Who didn’t like Mmm bop?
I Incubus (11th Grade) Imogen Heap (College)
J Jim Morrison (note I do not include the Doors). Heavy phase in high school, just like every other little girl…, Jose Gonzales (I forgot about him ’til just now. sin.) Jimi Hendrix, for life.
K The Kinks. Who doesn’t love them? I have dance parties to them.
L Liz Phair (most highly concentrated in high school)
M M.I.A. past, present, future… Mason Jennings (College) Merrick (junior year of college. Anyone else heard of them?) Madonna- Kidhood!
N Nelly. Yes, Nelly. 9th grade. Norah Jones (high school). It’s weird to put these two aside of eachother.
O Old Crow Medicine Show (college discovery)
P Phantom Planet (senior year of high school) The Pixies (for always, but extra fanhood points for high school)
Q Queen. For EVA and EVA!
R Regina Spektor (post college) Reel Big Fish (high school)
S The Strokes (college)
TThievery Corporation (college), Trampled by Turtles (college to now)
U UB-40 (childhood), U2 (high school)
VThe Velvet Underground (College and beyond…)
W Weezer (middle school, high school)
X X-tina. Ninth grade
YYanni. Never in my life.
Z The ZEPP! From the beginning to the bitter end, the Zepp. Also Zero 7. College.

Well, this is by no means a complete list, but it was fun to reminisce.

Has your musical taste changed over time, or stayed pretty similar? Any embarrassing musical skeletons in your closet? Hellooooo Mandy Moore…

See you guys tomorrow for a fun new project!

Great list! SO many of my favorites are on it!

  2. Ada says:

Let's not talk about the Celine Dion cd I bought with my own cash in middle school, mmkay? Yikes! I was all over Top 40 radio in my high school years and have slowly made the transition towards folkier singer/songwriter tunes, with a big splash of Broadway thrown in as well. I'm glad our musical tastes get to mature!

  3. Steve says:

    i love mandy moore 🙂

  4. Stephanie says:

Great list. I esp. love Eazy E, Queen and Weezer. 🙂 I am the one person on the planet (ok…probably not) that cringes at Hanson. Can't.stand. lol I am going to miss your music month!! I'm sure you've got something equally as creative up your sleeve for April!

  5. Meri says:

Well, I think we ALL love Mandy Moore…

  6. Steve says:

    thats probably so so true

  7. Terri says:

I'm curious to see what next month's project might be. And, yes, my musical tastes have changed over time…like instrumental stuff much better now than I did as a youngster.

  8. Sarah the Writer says:

My musical tastes have kind of been added to over time rather than changed: my dad raised me and my brothers on classic rock (I don't listen constantly but I do love it when he puts it on); I've always been into pop songs played on Radio Disney and its predecessor (Star something – I think it was local); 9 years ago, I finally gave in and started listening to country music (after 3 years of being exposed to it via my best friend, not to mention my mom and grandma for years before the bestie). I have stopped listening to artists (mainly Britney, Christian, BSB, and *NSYNC) but others I've been listening to beyond their time in the spotlight.

    Great end to music month!

  9. Meri says:

When I was much younger, around our house it was always oldies, and I still have a soft spot for a lot of those old tunes 🙂 I sure wish I had grown up on classic rock, but that was more middle school and beyond when my older sisters introduced me to it!

  10. Myche says:

I like what Steve did there. There aren't that many bands with repeating initial consonants. Mandy Moore is kinda the finest example, in terms of artistic integrity combined with an alliterative aspect. Herman's Hermits, Beastie Boys and Mike and the Mechanics come close, but M-squared. mmmm.

  11. Meri says:

Jack Johnson, Hot Hot Heat, Franz Ferdinand, Bobby Brown, Tina Turner, Kim Kardashian… oh wait, does Kim Kardashian sing? let's hope not…

  12. Myche says:

You're good. Bands with alphabetic sequences in their names: Another Bad Creation, New Order, Rolling Stones.

  13. Maryann says:

I still get excited when mmmbop comes on my ipod 🙂

  14. Meri says:

Errrrmmmm… Rod Stewart? Andrew Bird? Bing Crosby?

  15. prettylittlereckless says:

There are so many on this list I love too! For me, the Beatles will always remind me of Saturday mornings working at McD's- the store mgr made it a tradition. Best mornings ever. And X-tina… oh how I loved her Stripped Album. That was pretty much my theme album of my Junior year of HS.

    Great post!

  16. Steve says:

Summer Twins, Spooky Tooth, Avett Brothers, Avi Buffalo, Department of Eagles (if you skip the of), Ruby Suns…If i could do solo artists i'd have a lot more

  17. Meri says:

Ahhh, very nice. But what about the opposite, as in Bryan Adams, Dashboard Confessional, Velvet Underground, Janis Ian, Sugar Ray…

  18. Christianna says:

Yay for your classic rock picks! So good! And the funny ones are great. But, gotta love me some Mandy Moore (I still listen to her, which is totally out of character with my music taste… no really).

  19. Steve says:

Uncle Tupelo*, Sunset Rubdown, Slick Rick, Sigur Ros*, Oh No!, Mr. Lif, Modern Lovers** (favorite), Gang (of) Four, Brother Ali..thats all i got..Still sttaying strong for Mandy Moore 🙂

  20. Tatiana says:

There are quite a few of my faves in your list 🙂
    Great picks 🙂

    Haha awesome list!

  27. Ashley @ 365 things says:

I look back and wonder how I ever liked NKOTB…seriously?? haha!

  28. Rebecca says:

I was old enough that I missed the Hanson thing, but I did love NKOTB.

  29. Eric says:

Do you remember when we went to that Zero 7 show that Jose Gonzalez was a part of and you screamed out that you wanted to have his babies!

    That was great!

I love the diversity of your past and present music loves. You can't put Mer-Go-Round in a box peeps 🙂

  30. emma. says:

I have a pair of jeans signed by phantom planet. oh dear.

    Yanni touched my shoulder once.

I grew up with "the lite fm" with my mom and The Beatles, classic rock, and country with my dad.

I used to roller blade in my basement with my bf to the oldies station… we pretended we had a restaurant.

I don't think my tastes have changed a ton.. I've just added to them.

  31. Jessica Mura says:
