Around the world in 80 plates

No, this has nothing to do with the Bravo or Lifetime show of the same name, I’ve just seen the title while skimming the directTV while sitting on my ass trying to recover.

However, today is Travelin’ Thursday over here on Meri-Goes-Round, but lately the only thing doing any traveling is my tummy. In order to gain a little post-op heft, I’ve been slipping in mini-meals around the clock, pretty much, and to be honest its getting a little tedious. So… in the interest of appetite stimulation, who wants to play a little Global Gastronomy?

What exactly is global gastronomy? Well, I name a country, and you guys give me some delectable eats from that region! I’ll start out with a few of my personal favorites, and please chip in with your favorites- your own recipes, diner dinners, or (better yet) frozen entrees. Sorry to be Debby Downer, but since I’m not doing a lot of cooking right now any exotic meals from the freezer aisle or pantry staples would be appreciated! Oh, and vegetarian fare is also Here goes:

Meri’s Global Gastronomy:

India: Naan, Samosas (Amy’s! see? I really do mean processed foods…)

Spain: Tortilla Espanola (can’t find a frozen version of this, but I’m pretty sure that would be a rip off anyway since its just eggs, potatoes, onions…)

Italy: Pizza Pizza! (Amy’s are pretty good), Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet

Belgium: Chocolate!! Well, technically I prefer m&ms, but I’ve heard Belgian chocolate is fantastic…

Thailand: Green Papaya Salad, Pad Thai (hmm. takeout, usually, True Thai if I can)

Mexico: Salsa. Newman’s Own, Green Mountain Gringo, La Victoria, any kind! Homemade is even better. Also, Amy’s burritos are pretty good, even the gluten free ones I accidentally bought.

Egypt: Falafel (I wasn’t sure where exactly to give credit for this, and wikipedia says Egypt was the first known source). Boxed versions aren’t my favorite, so I’ll just go to Falafel King for this until Maoz franchises in Minneapolis!

Scotland: Oatmeal. Although I prefer oat bran to oatmeal, both are delicious, nutritious, easy, and versatile.

Central/ South America: Sweet potatoes. Just nuke it! (Nike joke…)

Okay- so what do you guys have for these countries or other countries? What about Canada, Japan, Germany, France, China, Australia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Greece…

Give me some ideas!

Meri
