Good (from the) Earth

Funny story.

I blog yesterday about my feelings about entering giveaways, entering contests, and so on. What do I find first thing this morning?

@GoodEarthTeaGood Earth Tea
Congrats @merigoesround @fitnspicy for winning our latest TEA-shirt giveaway!
Please DM us your mailing info.
Holla! (and no, I haven’t figured out how to copy/paste a tweet any better than that. I’m a technophobe so deal with it).
The message to get here is- keep entering things, and you will win! Now on for a nice iced Good Earth Original Caffeine Free tea… (I’m starting to think that I should work for them, along with Skechers…)
Yes, that's a 20 oz. cup there. Get yours at Target!
Mmmm yummy! Now what else is good from the earth? Well, we sojourned to one of the lovely Minneapolis co-ops  this evening (Seward, to be specific) to browse the selection. First off, these caught my eye:
heirloom tomatoes in all shapes and colors!
I have always had a soft spot for “unique” and non-uniform produce. Some people think deformed looking fruit and veggies are odd, I think they are special.
So I decided to make a night of it with the produce section and pick out some produce that didn’t fit the typical bill! This means fruit and veggies in slightly hybrid species, unexpected colors, and different shapes. The only hitch? They had to obviously look ripe and in good shape, and not be exorbitantly expensive. I’ve had good luck experimenting thus far; champagne mangos, white eggplant, golden zucchini, purple and white carrots, beauty radishes, and more.
Today’s haul?
Eggplant, purple and white bell peppers, golden zucchini, multi-colored squash, sweet treat pluot, dapple fire pluot
So what am I most excited to try? Well, since I’ve already tried the squash/ zucchinis and eggplant varieties, and I’m guessing the peppers taste much like any other bell pepper, my excitement lies mainly with the fruits! I never met a pluot I didn’t like to this day… so I’m excited mostly for the little green one! Let’s hope it doesn’t TASTE green, however…
So what’s my point tonight? Not much, really, besides- GET OUT THERE AND TRY SOME OF THE ODDBALL FRUITS AND VEGGIES! They might not be expected, but they are fun and tasty and might not be around in a few months!
I might try out Junia’s nectarine chip recipe this weekend, so stay posted!
What is your favorite non-traditional variety of a fruit or vegetable? Do you think they taste different or are just more fun to eat? What do you all have cooking this weekend?

I used to work at a Good Earch restaurant, was a waitress for 4 years, during my college days. Best job ever! Probably because we were all young and carefree and students and having the time of our lives. I still love the tea.

    • Meri says:

Oooh I am jealous! I used to love working in a restaurant too- it was a Neapolitan style pizzeria and I got fed very well for very cheap, and made some great friends!

  2. Anna Kudak says:

LOVE Seward. Fun fact, we lived just down the street from there before purchasing a house in St. Paul (1/2 a block from UST now 🙂

    • Meri says:

I like to make my rounds to the different groceries in the city. We used to live very close to the wedge and it was hard to not overspend and go there way too often! Now that we’re not super close to any one store, I still spend way too much on groceries haha. I love the Merriam Park neighborhood!

  3. I’ve got too many things to make this weekend. The trick is narrowing it down!

    • Meri says:

I can’t wait to see what you make! It gets overwhelming when you get home with bags full of groceries, not sure what to make/ eat first sometimes, I think!

  4. I found a heart shaped potato in my allotment- that was pretty cool! Although I think it might be from a year ago, so not sure about eating any of the ones I found!

  5. oomph. says:

i have never heard or seen a purple pepper! generally speaking, the all taste similar, but the also have their own distinct taste. like orange ones are a little sweeter to me than green. let me know what that one tastes like!

    [oomph.]

    • Meri says:

I agree- and yellow peppers I think are my favorite, which I think are distinctly sweeter than orange ones, but different than red… I’ll let you know!

  6. Those tomatoes look good… must confess, at first glance I thought they were chillis though hehe

  7. Stephanie says:

    Winner winner chicken dinner! Woo-hoo!

To copy/paste a tweet, you can just take a screen shot (hit “print screen” on your keyboard). Then open up paint, and paste the image. Crop and save…voila! You’ll have your tweet in image form.

    that tea sounds fabulous!

    • Meri says:

It is- I seriously go around telling people to try it and end up getting all of my coworkers and family hooked on it haha! I have a stash at home so I don’t run out.. its ridiculous.

  9. Sara K says:

I love unique produce! And I love going to markets when I travel to see other varieties- in India they have these TINY eggplants, they’re adorable!

  10. I just tried this variety of sweet onion called a “candy” onion and it’s really good!

  11. Babymama says:

    Hey Meri,
Thanks for stopping by and congrats on the win!
    xo

  12. Errign says:

I don’t know if I have a fave non-trad fruit/veg. I pretty much like all of them, I’m non-discriminatory. White & purple peppers taste like other peppers. 🙂

    • Meri says:

My favorite one is the carrots that aren’t orange, especially the ones with the greens still on top. They are so pretty for holidays!

  13. Kyla says:

Btw, wanted to let you know that I passed on the One Lovely Blog Award to you today. Hope you like it, and if you’re interested, check it out at http://kylasnotnormal.blogspot.com/2011/07/one-lovely-blog-award.html

  14. Terri says:

We’ve been eating tomatoes out of our garden like apples–we have some orange and yellow ones and were just talking last night how a purple tomato, which I’ve seen, doesn’t even sound appealing. Have never seen a purple carrot…

    • Meri says:

Mmmm you know I’m not so sure- I might like a purple tomato! I never met a tomato I didn’t like! But the red ones are the best I think. I can’t wait to live somewhere I can grow my own tomatoes!

  15. lol love how you like to get funny looking fruits and veggies! i haven’t tried a pluot yet actually. how do they normally taste? i’m so happy that u made the fruit chips! 😀 did u take a picture?

    • Meri says:

Mmmmm pluots are my favorite- sweeter even than plums, but juicier than apricots somehow. The more red they are the more I tend to like them. I sure have tried a lot of varieties! Check out my most recent post for photos- and I gave you a shoutout/link for the recipe. Thanks again!

  16. Raymund says:

When I was a child I love picking up those twin fruits, the conjoined ones, for me it was just fun and I agree they are unique

  17. I have that cup! 🙂

I’m pretty dull when it comes to veggies and fruit. I like the basic stuff and don’t venture too much from that, but I like what I like I guess! Your pics look yum though!

  18. Kristin says:

I totally need that reusable cup for my iced tea addiction!
