This means war(drobe)

Well, today is August 1st. You know what that means on Meri-goes-round, right? Oh, you don’t? Well, it meansย New topic! Something I think almost everyoneย might have an opinion on, whether positive or negative:

Television.ย This month will be filled with all things Teevee:

-reviews/ thoughts of shows I’ve seen in the past or watch for the first time

-features of soundtracks, characters, genres, and more

-and of course- lists! My favorite!

So tonight, I thought I’d kick off with a part of television that is both frivolous and delicious at the same time. It can also be quite repulsive with the wrong character or poor costume department…

BEST DRESSED CHARACTERS ON TV- According to Meri

1. Rachel Green, Friends: Mini-skirts, boots, little black dresses, and leather jackets. 90’s fashion icon for all! Plus, who could forget “The Rachel”?

rachel, clarissa, carrie, nancy

2. Clarissa, Clarissa Explains it all: Okay, so these days her clothes are pretty scary looking (the chokers, the tights, the layering, the neon…) but back in the day, we ALL wanted her wardrobe. Some days I still do.

3. Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City: Her fabulous dresses, her Jimmy Choos, the tutu, and more. This show at some point seemed to transcend cultural mores and instead, for me, became primarily about the GORGEOUS CLOTHES!

4. Nancy Botwin, Weeds: First off, I just want her hair. She has almost an exact replica of my sister’s hair, and I want it. Second, her dresses and bermuda style shorts as well as not-even-close-to-mom-jeans jeans along with wedge sandals make soccer moms immediately cooler.

5. The cast of Gossip Girl: I can’t choose one of them- Blair Waldorf and her headbands? Serena’s layers of gorgeous rich clothing? Chuck’s suits or Nate’s…well, he’s just hot. I’m not even entirely sure this show has a plot besides beautiful people in beautiful clothes, and I don’t care.

blair, serena, don, betty

6. Betty and Don Draper, Mad Men: Although I love the 60’s style of almost all of the characters on this show, the “protagonist couple” stands out- there are days I wish I were a dude so I could wear Draper’s gray suits. Betty manages to look chic in her nightie. Incredible clothes and styling.

Honorable mentions: Rachel Berry (Glee); Lucy (I Love Lucy); Mary Tyler Moore (The MTM show), Tia and Tamara (Sister Sister), Lisa Turtle (Saved by the Bell)

Who did I miss? What TV characters do you look to for fashion? Are there shows you watch as much for the fashion as the plot?

  1. Rebecca says:

I definitely wish that I had hair like Nancy Botwin.

  2. penny says:

I know some of the soaps I’ve watched I definitely enjoyed the clothes more than the plot! Especially Kate on Days. I always loved Mary Tyler Moore outfits and some of the others you mentioned. I think it would be an interesting experiment to see if shows or movies would be as successful if the main characters had bad fashion sense. I know sometimes really big personalities don’t need many props or great wardrobes. What do you think?

    • Meri says:

I think its interesting that sometimes the clothes actually are a huge part of a character’s “personality,” like there is one character on News Radio who is continuously wearing crazy outfits, and she says one time, “it’s my THING.” Or characters like Rachel in Friends who works in fashion- it wouldn’t make a lot of sense if she dressed horribly…

  3. Hahahahaha, I’m so freaking excited about this month! I’m a huge TV buff, so hopefully you introduce me to some great new shows!

I love the fashion icons that you picked. Good Lord, Gossip Girl is kinda just about the clothes, and the yummy looking dudes. I think they could have really done something with the plot line, but what do I know, it’s still massively popular!

All I could add to this list is “Ugly Betty” I love the fashion on that show! I mean the way Betty transforms and such is wonderful to watch!

    • Meri says:

I sort of missed out on Ugly Betty because I didn’t have a TV for a long time, and now I don’t think it is on anymore (or maybe since I only watch Netflix haha, maybe it is on still?) I’ll have to go back and start at the beginning! I love America Ferrera.

  4. Oh, and to answer the question of fashion to make a character better… see my love for “Ugly Betty”. I loved her even when she was “ugly”…

  5. So I might make myself sound dumb for saying this – but I love the Kardashians for fashion! haha Not so much Kim, but I love Kourtney’s outfits! I definitely don’t have a butt to fill out any Kim-type wardrobe! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Meri says:

I haven’t actually seen their clothes- kind of funny, I guess I never paid attention and I haven’t seen their TV show yet. I don’t think I get the channel they are on, I haven’t seen it on Netflix either? But in magazines they always look pretty good!

  6. Maegan says:

You covered all the ones I know, we don’t watch a lot of tv. From SATC, not only Carrie, but Charlotte too, I love her wardrobe!

    • Meri says:

I liked how each of them had their own style on SATC- like I really thought Samantha’s clothes were fun, just not for me. Carrie definitely was the fashionista of the bunch! Miranda had some pretty good clothes later on in the series- but the first few seasons she wore like weird sweat suit pants with work jackets… odd.

  7. Sooz says:

You pretty much mentioned my favs. From Clarissa (she did rock!) to the whole cast of Gossip Girl passing by Carrie Bradshaw. I also like some outifts from the girls of 90210 (the new one, although I did watch the 90’s version, I will hate to see someone dressed as David). Mc Hammer ple-ah-se!

    • Meri says:

I thought about a few other 90s stars… like Blossom, but some of the clothes are just too scary and recent to face… too many bodysuits, dark lipstick, chokers, baggy denim… gah!

  8. Karen says:

Oh I’m so glad Lucy got an honorable mention. I adore her dresses! She was tall and super skinny too so I guess clothes just looked good on her naturally.

  9. I agree with all of your picks. I also usually like the bachelorette dresses so i read the possessionista to see where they are from!

  10. i love headbands lately. hehehe. hmmm this is old school, but i used to love buffy the vampire slayer’s outfits LOL!

  11. Libby says:

Ooh! I am excited for TV month!

I love Rachel Berry’s outfits on Glee! They crack me up and yet some of them I would like to wear ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also love Betty Draper’s wardrobe. She had some pretty sweet maternity dresses.

I also enjoy all the sundresses Sookie Stackhouse wears. Not her sweats though.

Hmmm, if I think of more I will return!

    • Meri says:

I feel like Sookie is really hit or miss- I’ll either think she looks really cute or be wondering what on earth she is wearing. The work uniform doesn’t help- yikes!

  12. Cindy says:

jeez, how do you know so much

I wanted to be Punky Brewster when last I remember paying attention to tv.

but seriously….I though Punky ROCKED IT!

  13. vintch says:

clarissa was my idol growing up. her denim vest? genius! haha this was such a fun post:)

  14. sarah jessica parker’s outfits are hits and misses on the show… sometimes she looks amazing and other times its like hmmm… gossip girl on the other hand I’ve never seen blair or serena in a bad outfit!! even the ghetto brooklyn vanessa is always looking fab lol

    • Meri says:

I bet about half of the budget is for the clothes and styling haha! But its worth it because all the kiddies (myself included) want what they wear on the show!

  15. Bonnie says:

“Gossip Girl” is definitely my number one when it comes to fashion. I mean, COME ON. The wardrobes are gorgeous. Totally enviable.

Rachel on “Friends” was always my favorite because of her fashion sense. I was jealous of everything she wore.

My 7-year old self is still in love with Clarissa’s closet.

    • Meri says:

It’s funny, because sometimes looking back Rachels clothes are sort of ridiculous- but back in the day I thought they were awesome. I wanted to dress just like her.

  16. I love Sex and the City style and Gossip Girl. Hello high fashion! Love it ๐Ÿ™‚ And I’ll admit I watch Bold and the Beautiful after the noon news most days and get a wee bit excited when I notice they use JCrew in their wardrobe!

  17. oomph. says:

i tend to keep an eye on aria from pretty little liars and divya from royal pains. omg, clarissa explains it all…total flashback!

    [oomph.]

  18. Julie Del says:

Clarissa Explains is all was AWESOME!!!

  19. simplychic08 says:

good picks! i think joan from the show girlfriends is super stylish…

  20. penny says:

Didn’t Rachel from Friends wear the same owl tee shirt you had from Urban Outfitters in San Diego? I remember feeling honored since I paid for it for you-ha!

    • Meri says:

I think it was on Will and Grace actually- but I still have that shirt in a drawer at the cabin! If you want to borrow it you could have a little celebrity moment… ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Lyddiegal says:

Who doesn’t want Carrie’s closet? I mean seriously. The whole thing, transplanted into my bedroom. Please.

For stand out style, I really love Fiona from Burn Notice, and the girls from How I Met Your Mother are always styled in the most adorable way.

    • Meri says:

Other people have mentioned How I met your mother too- I haven’t watched it too many times and I guess I never noticed. I’ll have to pay more close attention!

  22. Stephanie says:

I love Rachel Berry on Glee! I loved the episode where she asked Brittany to start wearing her “signature” looks to make them cool. Mahaha!

    • Meri says:

haha, I haven’t seen that one but I’m cracking up at pretty much everything Brittany does lately when I watch. Like when puck shaves his head and she looks at Santana and whispers, “who IS that guy!”

  23. Simply Life says:

fun post – I totally forgot about clarissa explains it all!

  24. Jessie says:

I agree! All of these people dress amazing!

  25. This is such a great post!! I think Rachel’s outfits were always so cute!!

  26. Claire says:

i LOVE that you have a theme for the month! that’s so much fun. i’m TV obsessed seeing as that i worked on a handful of shows.

i totally agree with your choices. Carrie was a fashion icon (obviously) and i do love looking at the clothes on Gossip Girl. i’ve also enjoyed the clothes on Desperate Housewives, Pretty Little Liars, Project Runway, Beverly Hills 90210 (hee hee)…and so many more!

  27. I definitely want Nancy’s hair and wardrobe.

    • Meri says:

I know, right? Which is weird because her hair is always disheveled and her clothes aren’t really special… she just has good style (or rather, the show has a good stylist ๐Ÿ™‚ )

  28. top watches says:

I donโ€™t know Depardieu other than through his public profile and his sometimes very fine films. He is a big man (who has become very much bigger through the years) in many ways other than the obvious. He has had a film career in a market that pays well but not anywhere near as well as Hollywood. He has the kind of self confidence of a John Wayne allowing him to invest in and represent a diverse range of business enterprises that have amassed him significant wealth. Noone has ever accused him of not having business acumen.
