A few weeks ago my dear old pal Steve (stone mason, current Texan, and all around rock-star) suggested that I do a post about the gleeful abandon associated with kids at this time of years in regards to new toys. I’m not gonna mess with Texas, so I better deliver! As a tot, I can remember obsessing about certain toys. In no particular order:
-A radio (it also had a cassette player! woo hoo!)
-Nintendo (yes, the old one with duck hunt)
-pink plastic tea set (awesome!)
-A particular Cinderella watch with sparkles inside the timepiece
-Trolls (for more year than one…)
-Sega games
-An Ariel (Little Mermaid) Barbie
-A jungle gym we received one year that was a surprise from “Santa” and was totally awesome to me and my sisters
Now that I’m a “grown-up” it would be very easy to glance at kids in stores, glassy eyed and drooling over tickle-me-elmos, silly bandz, and Bratz dolls and wonder what all of the fuss is about. This is just stupid crap, right?
It might be. I do have an opinion about some of the scary toys out there lurking in the aisles (as in, just say no, parents out there…) But wouldn’t I be a hypocrite to think this since I get similarly agog when in the presence of certain grown-up goodies? (I was about to call them “adult toys,” but, well… that’s another story from another blogger I think…)
So I bring you my holiday faves! This isn’t a wish list, since these are all things I’ve purchased for myself in the previous month or two. Surprisingly often, these were free with “birthday month” coupons from stores, which makes it even better! Here you go!
 |
| The crossword nerd has a love for a very specific pen… |
 |
| $6 from Herbergers, and I can nuke tea to go on all my errands! |
 |
| Nesting tupperware to make my lunches exciting! $10 at Borders |
 |
| My birthday present to myself from Express |
 |
| Cute planner and notebook for my lists and lists! Borders on clearance! |
 |
These are 3 years old, but not a day goes by that I don’t love them! Le Creuset
|
 |
| This is the cutest story. I own about 7 books total, and this is one. |
So there you have it! Shallow, stupid toys and things that I wouldn’t give up without a fight. What “toys” do you get excited about now that you’re “all grown up”? Power tools? jewelry? phones?
Happy Monday everyone. I hope everyone is enjoying the farce Favre highlights in the ridiculous outdoor game. It surely has been interesting…
I return next time with tales of celebration and good humor!
Meri
