Where in the World?

With the soon returning show, “Dallas,” and the hit show “Nashville” already well into it’s first season, I got to thinking about how many shows happen to be titled with the city they take place in… (for simplicity’s sake, I’m focusing only on the United States for now, but please share any international shows in the comments if you have ’em!)

  • Dallas (the original and the remake)
  • Nashville (ABC, currently on the air)
  • Portlandia (love this)
  • Boston Legal (I think this show has ended)
  • Boston Public (aha! remember this one?)
  • Miami Vice
  • Good Morning Miami (about 10 years back… not memorable)
  • Las Vegas (older show, not to be confused with…)
  • Vegas (current show)
  • Laguna Beach (back before the bajillion spinoffs)
  • Reno 911 (I never watch this anymore- is it still on?)
  • Hawaii 5-0 (again, the original AND the remake)
  • Chicago Fire (current show)
  • Chicago Hope (I’m pretty sure this was a TV show…)
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  • Providence (I don’t know what this is, my mom used to watch it)
  • Beverly Hills 90210 (again, the original and the remake… is nothing new?)
  • Long Island Medium

And how about movies? this list could go on for a looong time…

  • Leaving Las Vegas
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  • Feeling Minnesota (yay! the homeland! but this movie is hella stupid)
  • Milwaukee, Minnesota (its a double!)
  • The Philadelphia Story
  • Philadelphia
  • Mystery, Alaska
  • Chicago
  • Texas Chainsaw Massacre (and all of the sequels)
  • Raising Arizona
  • Sleepless in Seattle
  • Sweet Home Alabama
  • Meet me in St. Louis
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Troop Beverly Hills
  • Beverly Hills Cop
  • Beverly Hills Chihuahua
  • Mr. Smith goes to Washington

Have you ever noticed this trend? Can you think of shows (U.S. or worldwide) that I forgot? Does your hometown or home state have representation?

Bright spots in winter

Lately we’ve been having a bit of a cold spell. The bright spots in the winter have been both literal (my blooming birthday amaryllis plant from my parents) and a little more subdued (the icy crystal patterns in the snow that I see walking to work each day).

Here is a quick collection of flower and frost:

What bright spots and colorful delights have you been seeing this winter? Do you keep indoor plants?

Characterrific or Characturd?

I’ve got a bit of the mid-winter hibernations going on these days, and have been watching quite a bit of TV in the process (alongside studying, crafting, photo projects, etc.) I thought I’d play a little divisive game in which I decide who I think the best (characterrific!) and worst (characturd!) characters are on some current teevee shows. Oh heck, maybe some shows that are no longer on the air, too. Here goes round one:

Show: Characterrific: Characturd

Downton Abbey: Violet (Maggie Smith): Edith (ugggh!) and O’Brien (its a tie)

downton-abbey-violet-dowager-countess-of-grantham1-x-200

dowager on duty…yay!

Revenge: Nolan (especially post haircut): Charlotte (dullsville)

Once Upon a Time: Captain Hook (le sigh): Henry (cue annoying child…)

Mad Men: Roger Sterling (makes me laugh almost every episode): Sally Draper (I swear its not just the kids on shows that I hate, she’s just really awful)

mad-men-sally-draper

bratty mcstupid… nay!

Nashville: Deacon, Rayna, Juliet: Scarlett (she is so beyond annoying I can hardly stand it)

The Bachelor: hmmmm still thinking… okay, the booty dancing 50 shades of gray chick for the laughs: the woman in the wedding dress/returning “kacey” chick from ben season who is judgemental about our “characterrific” contestant despite being a lump of boring human waste/ emotional catastrophe herself.

Girls: Hannah: Hannah. No, wait, characturd actually goes to Jessa, she makes no sense whatsoever.

girls-hannahs-diary_article_story_main

so wrong its right… er… yay!

America’s Next Top Model: Janice Dickinson (bring her back!), Nigel Barker (is he still on the show?) Okay, I guess Tyra…: Both Mr. Jay and his lame Katy Perry stylist replacement

What are all of your opinions on these characters? Agree/disagree/ agree to disagree/ alternate ideas? Suggestions for other shows to pick apart?

Book it… to the theater!

Okay, so I’m feeling like its been a CRAZY long time since I made a list around here, and since lists are what I enjoy even more than marshmallows…

I’ve got a list for you.

Books that should be made into movies,

in my humble opinion:

1) The Chaperone by Laura Moriarty: Jazz age flavor, a bit of mystery, the spunk of Louise Brooks, complex and interesting characters, prohibition, and all of this juxtaposed against a small town in Kansas.

louise

Louise Brooks

2) Rules of Civility by Amor Towles: The glamour, the clink of the glasses, the tragedy, the diamonds, and the squeaky upper crust and tennis whites. And the city.

3) History of a Pleasure Seeker by Richard Mason: From Amsterdam to Cape Town, a cruise liner and horseback riding in the country, an opulent mansion and a portrayal of a very sick young boy… oh, and can I also get a sequel while we’re at it?

4) Signed, Mata Hari by Yannick Murphy: because already, when I was reading it, I felt like I was watching a better version of South Pacific, and then after all that… they moved onto Europe and a French prison…such beautiful writing deserves to be shown on in high def.

mata hari

Margaretha Gelle/ Mata Hari

5) Netherland by Joseph O’Neill: The grime, the weightiness. The cricket games and the colorful characters.

***and a bonus 6) Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn: I think we all want this, and I think we might be in luck, as I’ve heard whispers of a movie being made soon…

honorable mentions: 7) Motherland by Amy Sohn, 8) Vaclav and Lena by Haley Tanner, 9) Four Kitchens by Laura Shockey, and 10) Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

Next time: Books that have had beautiful movies made out of them, and then… inevitably… books that have been ruined by the movies made out of them.

What books are you dying to see made into a movie? What good books have you read lately?

Twenty Thirteen

Happy New Year to all!

I think it has been a whirlwind of a holiday season for most that I’ve talked to recently, and I have to admit at least a modicum of relief at the idea of having some more time to myself again coming up here. Not that school, work, family, friends, and writing don’t keep me busy enough without holidays, though! Plus, this little blog, which I’ve more or less neglected for the past little bit.

In celebration of a new year, I thought I’d share some of the things I am looking forward to in the coming months:

IMG_4895

1. Continuing with my education in classical homeopathy. So far I’ve learned the most fascinating things, been inspired in a whole new realm, and met some awesome people!

2. Meeting my brand new niece who was born yesterday, and spending more time with my other nieces, nephew, and family and friends in general.

3. Continuing to write my column about social interactions as it moves into both online and print editions.

4. Learn more about photography with the help of some of our new Christmas/ birthday gifts including a remote control, new lens, and a reflector, as well as a gift of “photo tour” to learn how to do night photography. Look out Ansel Adams!

IMG_4761

5. The Great Gatsby– have y’all seen the trailers for this?

6. Mad Men returns… as does Girls… and Breaking Bad final season, part 2!

7. Maaaaaybe a little travel if all of the stars can align.

8. Craft projects, specifics TBD.

9. Reading a lot of new books (I just finished The Chaperone, a fun read, and I’m on the tail end of a book called Signed, Mata Hari, and it is awesome. Check it out!). On my list are Sweet Tooth, Flight Behavior, The Bloodletter’s Daughter, and Gillian Flynn’s other novels (loved Gone Girl).

10.  Keeping my damn self healthy with sleep, food, exercise, relaxation, good times, and (preventative) doctoring!

What are you all looking forward to in 2013?

Salud!

Iron Woman- the Sequel

So a few months ago I wrote a post all about iron. At the time, I had found out from one of my doctors that I was low in iron stores (not anemic). Initially, I planned to try to take care of my iron levels through diet alone. When that proved difficult, I reluctantly started taking ferrous sulfate supplements (elemental iron). Originally I was taking 3 caplets a day, but the nausea was so overwhelming at times that I cut down to twice a day. After a month or so I followed up with another set of labs. While my iron stores had improved, my doctor prescribed me six more months of iron supplements. Next up is my check-up in March. I’m really really hoping I get the green light to cut down even further or possibly even stop taking them. While I hate taking a lot of supplements, and iron seems to be hard on my stomach, I do want to make sure I protect my heart by getting enough iron.

iron

So this is what I’m putting into my body…

Since you’re supposed to take iron with food, my next step, about a month or two ago, was to start researching which foods were considered iron inhibitors. As a vegetarian, I’m already sort of at risk for not getting enough iron, since I don’t have the meat or seafood sources. However, I was disheartened to learn that the majority of vegetarian sources of protein are actually iron inhibitors. Oh, that and TEA, which comprises probably 80% of my daily liquid intake. Ugh. Here is a list of iron inhibitors:

Dairy/ Calcium- while it is any calcium that inhibits iron, I like to get a lot of my protein from cottage cheese or greek yogurt. Dangit… moving on…

Eggs- Another affordable, easily accessible source of vegetarian protein. URGH.

Soy- uh, okay, running out of options here…

Whole Grains- Seriously, science?

Walnuts- Okay, so I could eat other nuts to get protein, I suppose, but walnuts are supposed to uniquely have the omega oils that I’m not getting from fish. DOUBLE URGH. Oh, and in case this isn’t frustrating enough, the main compound in walnuts that IS the iron inhibitor is also found in dried beans, lentils, and peas. Is nothing safe?!

Cocoa, Coffee, Tea- I could do without cocoa a lot of the time. I’ve even been cutting out coffee more or less for the past year. But I draw the freaking line at tea. COME ON!! Effing Oxalates!

My last little rant has to do with the supposed “upside” of all of this. Supposedly eating foods rich in vitamin C with iron is helpful in absorption. However, when I started to do some research, I found that a lot of foods I consider good sources of vitamin C (fruits like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) actually have oxalates or phenolic acid, a few of the above mentioned offenders. ARHGH!

So at this point, I’m just sucking down the iron, trying to eat only oat or rice products and veggies rich in Vit C with my iron, and keeping other foods at least an hour or two from when I take the iron, but I’m nowhere near perfect with it. And this is pretty hard to do, obviously. At the end of the day, I’m more worried about my overall nutrition, and continuing to eat these whole foods and good sources of protein (and spinach, which is… dare I say… rich in iron but ALSO AN IRON INHIBITOR?!)

The moral of the story is- it seems sometimes with nutrition that you just can’t win. I’m sort of at a loss here. Like I said, I’m going to just keep trucking on with the supplements and see what happens next. I’ll keep you posted…

-Iron(seeking) Woman

Do you have any frustrations around nutrition advice and the contradictions that frequently come from this, or conflicting advice about health and nutrition?

That was awkward…

Hi Friends: I am working on a future column for the magazine I write for, and need your help with a “super scientific” little social psychology poll. PLEASE HELP ME! Read the options below and vote which you find the “most awkward.” Please feel free to also add your own write-in votes!

A) Deciding how long to wait before you acknowledge an acquaintance walking towards you (like on the sidewalk/ street or from afar).

B) When someone brings up a party/ event you are having that you haven’t invited them to or don’t want to invite them to.

C) Making fun of something/ saying you dislike something and then realizing someone in the conversation is included (i.e. “who would name their child Marvin? Oops… Sorry Marv, I meant… the other spelling…”)

D) Finding yourself on the same path walking somewhere with someone you know, but neither of you has anything to say to the other, so you walk silently alongside one another unless someone awkwardly changes pace, or comments on the weather, or breaks the awkward silence.

E) Being the first one at a party/ event when you barely know the host.

THANK YOU!

Thank Full!

Each day this month I’ve been participating in “30 Days of Thankful,” adding something each day to reflect on things in my life that I am thankful and grateful for.

The month isn’t quite over, but since we’re on Thanksgiving holiday still, I thought I’d share some of the things I’ve given thanks for lately, and share some photos from our Thanksgiving celebration.

Being able to walk to work, flowers, public libraries, the ER at Regions hospital, books like Gone Girl…

Pinterest, photography, public art, fine arts, music…

family, friends, sisters, parents, nieces, nephews…

raspberries, beer, good earth tea, yummy food, and more!

What did you do to celebrate Thanksgiving? What are some things you feel thankful for?

A Bit of Sage Advice

Today is the day, folks… another “spice up your life” post! Obviously its what we’ve all been holding our breath waiting for…

Okay, maybe not, but it does seem very timely with the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, to talk about sage today.

source

“Spice up your Life”: Sage

The Name Game: “Salvia Officinalis” (from officina, referring to its medicinal use), “S. Salvatrix” (Sage the Savior), “adacayi” (island tea).

Famous Advocates: Charlemagne, Pliny the Elder, Simon and Garfunkel

Outside the Kitchen: Sage has a multitude of medicinal uses and indications. It can heighten concentration and attention span (in tea form), soothe/ anesthetize skin (in oil form), digestive relief,  soothe sore throat, control blood pressure/ heart beat, deal with grief/ anxiety/ depression, fertility, insect/snakebites (juice from fresh leaves), and even warding off evil and the plague (it was one of the ingredients in “Four Thieves Vinegar,” used to fight off the plague). It is currently being researched for treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Inside the Kitchen: Sage plays well with sausage, stuffing, salads, potatoes, pork, red sauces, lamb, parmesan cheese, onion, chicken, pasta, and more!

The career of a sage is of two kinds; He is either honored by all in the world, like a flower waving its head, or else he disappears into the silent forest.

-Lao Tzu

Do you cook with sage? have you ever used it medicinally? What are you planning to have for Thanksgiving dinner?

Reality Bites!

Earlier this evening I was watching last week’s episode of Project Runway- All Stars. It was a pretty dope graffiti challenge (oh, excuse me, “aerosol art” as they called it…). I started to think about what it is on reality TV that makes someone an “all-star.” Here are a few of the qualities that make people stand out on reality TV:

  • “The Bitch” or villain (Omarosa from The Apprentice many years back, Spencer from The Hills, Courteney from last year’s Bachelor, Kristin from Laguna Beach, Ivy from Project Runway
  • “The Kook” Marcel from Top Chef (with the foam?!), The chick from Project Runway who spit on her clothes to mark them, Austin Scarlett from Project Runway, Lisa from America’s Next Top Model (okay, perhaps that was substance abuse, not kookiness…)
  • “My  name is my personality” (Suede, Peach, Sweet Pea, Casanova from Project Runway, Puck from the Real World)
  • Having a crazy style or hairstyle (Sanjaya from American Idol, Snookie from Jersey Shore, Kate Goslin’s soccer mom spike on John and Kate plus 8.
  • “The Fighter” Bianca from America’s Next Top Model… Okay, everyone “as edited” on ANTM actually… Coral from the Real World
  • “The Hot One” Andrew Firestone from The Bachelor (hubba!), Sam and Ilan from Top Chef season 2 (the only season I’ve ever watched. They were finalists and both hawt). Jamie from Real World- San Diego (she’s on Once Upon a Time now as Mulan!) and, well, most people on reality tv, actually, or TV in general…
  • “The Catchphrase” Christian Siriano from Project Runway with his “Fierce,” Paris Hilton on The Simple Life with “That’s Hot,”and The Jersey Shore’s “Gym, Tan, Laundry.”

Who do you think are the most memorable Reality TV contestants or stars? Did I miss any “categories”?

The Tribe Has Spoken…
