Saved By the Bell Character Quiz

Growing up, I had  serious Saved By the Bell addiction. I’m talking every single afternoon after school, sometimes before school, and it didn’t matter how many times I had seen the episode. I don’t know if it was the comfortingly formulaic plot, the cheesy 90’s fashion and hair, or my love of one Zack Morris, but I definitely was hooked.

I found, as I got a bit older, that I was not alone. This show is somewhat of a phenomenon among my generation (and other generations too, I’m sure). Thus, I thought it would be fun to do a TV quiz tonight!

WHICH SAVED BY THE BELL CHARACTER ARE YOU?

Bayside High Forever

1. You just scored a dream date with your crush! What do you suggest for the date?

A. A trip to the beach so you can see her in her bikini

B. The ballet! That way you can make sure the barbarian can stand a little culture!

C. The mall. He does carry plastic, right?

D. First she can watch my wrestling match, then we’ll go to a football game

E. Zoinks! A girl is going out with me?

2. What is your best physical feature?

A. My hair. I’ve got it gelled down to a science

B. My intelligence, you chauvinist pig!

C. My fabulous fashion sense, of course

D. My dimples

E. Oh no, I left the lid off my ant farm!

3. Monday Monday… time to get up and go to school. What’s your favorite part of school?

A. Class? Is that the place next to the lockers?

B. Chemistry, Literature, Algebra… I rock them all. I’m ever teacher’s dream.

C. Girl, I just go for the gossip!

D. Blondes, Brunettes, Redheads… oh, and sports.

E. Groinks! I forgot where I go to school!

4. What is your favorite song?

A. I wish they all could be California Girls

B. She blinded me with science

C. Fashion (turn to the left!)

D. We are the champions

E. Meeeep! Anything my girlfriend Tori Spelling Violet sings at Glee Club!

5. What is your greatest fear?

A. Losing my looks so I can’t score babes

B. Getting an A minus

C. Finding myself at the Max- in LAST SEASONS SHOES!

D. Jessie might beat me up for being a sexist pig.

E. My own shadow

So, if you haven’t cracked the code already… here are the results!

Mostly As- You’re  Zack Morris. Dreamy and bleached blonde with big plans and an even bigger cell phone… you rule the school! If only Belding would get out of your way, you would spend your day wooing chicks and surfing.

Mostly Bs- You’re Jessie Spannow. Though some might call you an egghead, you prefer “intellectually superior.” You’re driven for excellence, with a little help from some friendly neighborhood uppers. You like your boyfriend Slater, but your real love is being a self righteous know it all.

Mostly Cs- You’re Lisa Turtle. The producers were so happy to have a minority cast member they forgot to give you a personality beyond shopaholic. Except for that one episode where you read philosophy with the lit snob. Sorry Lisa- but at least you always looked fierce!

Mostly Ds- You’re Albert Clifford (AC) Slater. The producers almost forgot you were a minority too, but then you flexed your muscles and showed them your curly mullet, and they gave you a single episode about your Chicano roots. It was meaningful. Oh wait, I forgot- Zack Morris was a Native American. Upstaged again by that dreaded Preppy!

Mostly Es- You, unfortunately, didn’t crack the code and realize early on that you would end up a Screech and cheat. Therefore, you probably are a real life Screech. Sorry! But look on the bright side, I didn’t say you were a Belding!

If you answered all questions with “when life gives you lemons, make some lemonade!”  then you’re Kelly Kapowski. And I couldn’t think of an interesting answer for you for any questions that didn’t involve cheerleading, so you weren’t really included in the quiz until now.

I hope you guys had fun with my quiz- Which one are you? I for one think I’m a Stacy Carosi (bonus points if you list a character not included in the above quiz). Did you watch Saved by the Bell?

M and Emmy’s

Well well well- I’ve asked, and boy have I received! For the past few days, I’ve been beseeching you, my friends and readers, to recommend some TV shows for me to watch as I anxiously await the cold, long, dark, long, and unforgiving Minnesota winter. And for a little bonus if you made it through all of these- A few shows for this fall I’m intrigued by:

source

-Pan Am (ABC)- I am a sucker for 60s jet set glamour and soapy goodness! Plus, Christina Ricci

-Charlie’s Angels Remake (ABC)- for the love of morbid curiosity

-Up all night (NBC)- Christina Applegate, nuff said.

-Apartment 23 (ABC)- The concept actually sounds different than whats out there.

-Hart of Dixie (CW)- for Rachel Bilson’s sake, and for how blatant of a “Sweet Home Alabama” rip off it looks to be

-Suburgatory (ABC) A show with a clever name is bound to be clever too, right?

-Best Friends Forever (NBC)- to remember my youth, kind of.

where in the world with Meri Sandiego go?

And for my final, completely unrelated question of the night: Choose my next vacation!

1. Savannah, GA

2. Chicago

Pick one, and tell me WHY!

Made for TV Movies

Last night the man and I went on a date to the Trylon, a microcinema with only 50 seats.

We went because they were playing one of my favorite movies of all time. Sabrina.

Would you not sell your soul (or a horcruxed part of your soul) for this dress??

So I got to thinking as someone in the theater mentioned the remake of this movie. People don’t like to leave stories alone. Books are made into movies, movies have remakes and sequels, and occasionally…

…movies are turned into TV shows, or vice versa. Tonight’s blog will list/rate a few of these TV/Movie “hybrids.” (if man-go-round is reading, that is for him).

Movies made for TV, and TV made for Movies

1. Clueless: Movie–>TV. The movie here was clearly superior to the TV show, but I loved both. There were several of the same cast members, except for the ever important Cher, Josh, and Elton. Clearly the movie, which entails Paul Rudd, wins.

2. Brady Bunch: TV–> Movies (I think there are two). It’s a toss up for me here. The TV show is pretty classic, but the movies (starring Shelly Long, Gary Cole, Christine Taylor, and Jean Smart) are satire and very funny. It’s sort of comparing apples to oranges here, so no one wins. Except we all know the loser… and I don’t mean Jan. I mean Cindy, who sucks in every incarnation

3. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Movie–>TV. I think the TV show wins here, even though Dylan from 90210 is in the movie. The TV show wins because of its all-star cast, its staying power/ cult status, and its overall cheese.

4. Charlie’s Angels: TV–>Movies. I can’t pick a winner again, I know, grow a pair… But obviously the TV show has an edge for Farrah Fawcett’s…hair…and the movies are awesome because of the action scenes and Bill Murray.

5. Sex and the City: TV–> Movies. I’m not sure I even need to type this, but the TV show is better. There is no part of either movie that is better than a single part of the TV shows, in my humble opinion.

6. Starsky and Hutch: TV–Movie. I haven’t seen the TV show, but I’m betting the movie is better. It has some of the funniest actors of our time, plus Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear.

7. Kids in the Hall/ Brain Candy: TV–> Movie. Toss up. Man do I love Dave Foley. TV, movies, News Radio…

Others: Da Ali G show, several hundred SNL skits, Sabrina the teenage witch (yes, there are movies), Lizzie McGuire, Dukes of Hazzard, The Mask, Ace Ventura, Bewitched, Mission Impossible…

So. What do you all think of the watering down of our general media pool by converting all of these stories into every possible type of media? Videogames, Theater, Movies, TV, Books… there seem to be no limits.

And I’m doing a special project tomorrow for Make my List Monday. Help a girl out and tell me a TV show I should check out!

Let’s have a “Ball”

Who doesn’t love Lucille Ball? I know there must be 1 or 2 people out there that don’t, but I sure can’t conceive of why that might be. Watching I Love Lucy is like a familiar friend making you laugh at yourself and making you forget any worries you might have. Anyone’s life is a breeze compared to the predicaments of one Lucy Ricardo. There’s Lucy, Ricky, Ethel, and my personal favorite- Fred Mertz.

I love Lucy- I dressed up as her for Halloween a few years ago.

finally, an excuse to drink the "vitameatavegamin" right outta the bottle...

Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts in scene from Pretty Woman) loves her too! Behold!

source

Do you love Lucy? Well, I bet you do- so what is your favorite Lucy moment? Need help? Well here’s a few of mine.

1. Vitameatavegamin- Lucy gets drunk on “medicine” while casting for a commercial

source

2. Chocolate factory- priceless face stuffing as the conveyer belt spins quickly out of control!

3. Baking day- The loaf of bread that kept on giving!

source

4. The one where Lucy and Ethel are dressed up as Aliens for some bizarro moneymaking scheme

5. The abovementioned and Hollywood Hooker approved grape stomping scene

Do you love “I Love Lucy” or what? Do you have other favorite older shows I should watch? What TV do you like to cuddle up to on Saturday mornings?

I told you Sew!

The past few years, there is exactly one show that I consistently try to actually watch when it is on TV. That show is Project Runway.

source

I don’t necessarily mean I always watch it on my TV screen (I mean, if they are going to feature the episodes online, who is going to bother with cable?) I mean, rather, that I get so excited for new seasons that I keep up with the show while the eliminations are actually happening.

So imagine my surprise when I found out that a new season started last week! I think this calls for celebration. Why is Project Runway so fabulous? Well, for starters the hosts/judges/mentors are an all-star lineup. I can’t possible decide whether I like Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, or Nina Garcia best. I would have to say M.K. wins for his side commentary during Judging. Heidi wins for her outfits and German accent. Tim wins for… well, I think T.G. just wins at life.

I mainly watch the show because I find it fascinating to see what they will create each week. I am a sucker for shows where things are created in front of our very eyes- Top Chef, How its Made, cooking shows, even LA Ink.

But tonight’s post isn’t about the clothes. It’s about the contestants. So in honor of Project Runway season 9 (which I haven’t started yet, so no spoilers please!) here are a few of my favorite people from past seasons! Let’s start at the beginning:

Fashion: Turn to the Left!

sargent PEPPER!

season 1:  Best overall contestant: Austin Scarlett (just as enchanting on his show with Santino last year) Most frightening contestant: The loathsome enigma that is Wendy Pepper Best reason not to trust a model: Morgan and her personality disorder

season 2: Best contestant: Santino Rice, if for no other reason than his T.G. impression (but a lot of other reasons too) Hottest twosome who probably aren’t interested in me, ahem: Daniel and Nick Most likeable: Chloe

season 3: Best foreigner: Uli and her “colors from Miami” Best execution of adult braces, ever: Michael Knight Strangest neck: Jeffrey and his tattoos

season 4: Best personality- tie: Chris March and his clothes made of hair vs. itty bitty Christian Siriano Contestant I liked a lot but can’t figure out why: Jillian

chris squared!

season 5: Most annoying but the only contestant I remembered: Kenley

season 6: Contestant who wins by default because I didn’t really watch the season: The guy from Minnesota, for state pride.

season 7: Jolliest contestant: Anthony Contestant I most wanted to either stop whining or get hit by a bike: Janeane

season 8: Utterly confusing yet oddly likeable: Casanova Worst contestant in history: Ivy  Worst contestant who also has the worst lips:  Gretchen Best portfolio of clothes, on the runway and his own: Mondo

Across all seasons: Best names: Casanova, Sweet Pea, Mondo, Peach, Ping

So there it is! Do you guys watch Project Runway? Do you like to watch shows where contestants make things and then get eliminated one by one? If nothing else, tell me you love Tim Gunn!

Auf Wiedersehen!

Belly-vision

No, its not a post about the inner workings of my GI tract, nor does it have anything to do with me and my rockin’ abs.

Nope, this is a post about food on TV! I’ve been whipping up batches of dried fruit/ fruit chips all week long (nectarines, sweet treat pluots, bananas, and dapple dandy pluots). A proper post will be sure at some point, but in the mean time… just turn on your TV! If you don’t know where to start, I’ll give you a primer…

Meri’s Belly-vision Telly-vision Awards

Keepin’ it Hot in the Kitchen Award: Giada DiLaurentis, (from whatever her program is called). This woman has the spark of a feisty youth and the wisdom of a goddess. Her smile lights up the kitchen and she is excited about everything. All cleavage aside, she is a marketer’s dream. Hell, she’s everyone’s dream!

Best TV Program for your inner nerd or attention span problem: Alton Brown’s “Good Eats.” The camera work and fancy tricks. The actually useful kitchen strategies. The dorky knowledge and history thrown in before you even notice you are learning. This show is super addicting.

Most confusing Foodie Crush: A Tie!

Contender #1: Bobby Flay (Grill it! etc) Is it the ginger crew cut? The lisp? The possibility he’s a wife-cheater? ( can’t remember if that is him or someone else)? The fact that he primarily grills things I’ve never eaten and have no desire to start eating? I have no idea, but despite his not adding up on paper and being sort of old, I still have a bizarre crush on him.

bobby flay, anthony bourdain

Contender #2: Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations). Now Anthony has more obvious appeal as a lady killer (or at least he did 5-10 years ago). He’s charming, funny, he hates Rachel Ray… but the reason this one is confusing for me is that he is probably 50 years old (not my general dating pool) and more importantly- he consistently degrades vegetarians. Hmmm. Do I have a strange penchant for uber-carnivores?

Most over the top: Paula Dean. No explanation necessary, ya’ll.

Food show I love to watch even though I never want what they are cooking: Lydia’s Italy. She is simply the most adorable TV personality, and the way she cooks food makes me feel like I’m getting a neck massage on a beach with a side of Xanax. And perhaps some stuffed olives. Viva Lydia!

Most obvious man-crush: Jamie Oliver. Again, no explanation necessary.

Best use of Theatrics and tension-building music: Iron Chef. The topic could be beets, and you’d think the world’s very security is at stake. Plus, I like Cat Cora and I don’t know where else to find her on TV.

There you have it my little foodies! Now who makes your list? Do you have any celebrity foodie crushes like me? Am I confusing hunger with love for another human?

Cartooniversity

If you know me in real life, or have been reading my blog for a little while now, it might not be a surprise that I was totally nutso for Archie Comics as a kid. We’re talking a cupboard full of Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the rest.

source

So imagine my excitement when I happened upon something last weekend while browsing Hulu A-Z. An 80’s cartoon based on the Archies? Could it be true?

You can probably guess what happened next, but if you can’t… it went something like…

“watch 20 minute cartoon. Become slowly paralyzed by the cheesiest, beyond cheesiest thing you have ever seen. Continue denial of the horrible product you are watching by subjecting yourself to learning the “dance of the week.” Turn off cartoon and assume fetal position until the following Tuesday. End.”

So obviously I was a bit traumatized by this pathetic excuse for a cartoon. I mean, I was born in the eighties for crying out loud, the GLORY days of cartoons! So I thought I’d focus day two of TV month with a little cartoon love!

My ultimate favorite childhood cartoons:

source

1. Animaniacs: I wanted to dress like Dot, act like Wakko, and take over the world with Pinky and the Brain. I loved every little side character they had, and collected every bit of paraphernalia I could find. The only one I didn’t relate to was Yakko. He was tall.

2. The Pink Panther: This was a substantial phase for me. No idea why… but I loved how he could run on his tippy-toes.

3. The Jetsons: Do I need to explain the appeal of airport-style conveyer belts, sassy robot housekeepers, flying to school in a space ship, or Judy Jetson’s wardrobe? Didn’t think so. Plus, Mr. Sprocket was guaranteed to blow a gasket like the teacher on Daria at least once per episode… bonus…

4. Noozles: I had to google this creepy cartoon to remember what it was called. It was vaguely anime, with a magic koala and I think a magic watch as well. There was definitely something in the eucalyptus here, but I sure was drinking the Kool-Aid. See also: Mya the bee: An entirely different cartoon I loved mostly, I think, because it followed Noozles and had an insanely catchy theme song. Powerful noozles indeed!

source

5. Darkwing Duck: Who, I mean WHO didn’t like this guy? When there’s trouble just call DW…Let’s get dangerous.

Runners up: Inspector Gadget, Gummi Bears, TailSpin, Muppet Babies, Underdog, Tom and Jerry, Doug, Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles (for the concept and the gooey pizza, if nothing else), Dexter’s Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Smurfs (only because I so infrequently watched it).

and NO AWARD given to: Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Bobby’s World, Life with Louie

Wondering where your favorite more “mature” cartoons are on this list? Well, that’s a topic for another post, isn’t it? so stay “tooned” for more! (I physically can’t resist typing puns…)

What were some of your favorite cartoons growing up? Were you one of the godforsaken few who knows what the bleep a Noozle is?

This means war(drobe)

Well, today is August 1st. You know what that means on Meri-goes-round, right? Oh, you don’t? Well, it means New topic! Something I think almost everyone might have an opinion on, whether positive or negative:

Television. This month will be filled with all things Teevee:

-reviews/ thoughts of shows I’ve seen in the past or watch for the first time

-features of soundtracks, characters, genres, and more

-and of course- lists! My favorite!

So tonight, I thought I’d kick off with a part of television that is both frivolous and delicious at the same time. It can also be quite repulsive with the wrong character or poor costume department…

BEST DRESSED CHARACTERS ON TV- According to Meri

1. Rachel Green, Friends: Mini-skirts, boots, little black dresses, and leather jackets. 90’s fashion icon for all! Plus, who could forget “The Rachel”?

rachel, clarissa, carrie, nancy

2. Clarissa, Clarissa Explains it all: Okay, so these days her clothes are pretty scary looking (the chokers, the tights, the layering, the neon…) but back in the day, we ALL wanted her wardrobe. Some days I still do.

3. Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City: Her fabulous dresses, her Jimmy Choos, the tutu, and more. This show at some point seemed to transcend cultural mores and instead, for me, became primarily about the GORGEOUS CLOTHES!

4. Nancy Botwin, Weeds: First off, I just want her hair. She has almost an exact replica of my sister’s hair, and I want it. Second, her dresses and bermuda style shorts as well as not-even-close-to-mom-jeans jeans along with wedge sandals make soccer moms immediately cooler.

5. The cast of Gossip Girl: I can’t choose one of them- Blair Waldorf and her headbands? Serena’s layers of gorgeous rich clothing? Chuck’s suits or Nate’s…well, he’s just hot. I’m not even entirely sure this show has a plot besides beautiful people in beautiful clothes, and I don’t care.

blair, serena, don, betty

6. Betty and Don Draper, Mad Men: Although I love the 60’s style of almost all of the characters on this show, the “protagonist couple” stands out- there are days I wish I were a dude so I could wear Draper’s gray suits. Betty manages to look chic in her nightie. Incredible clothes and styling.

Honorable mentions: Rachel Berry (Glee); Lucy (I Love Lucy); Mary Tyler Moore (The MTM show), Tia and Tamara (Sister Sister), Lisa Turtle (Saved by the Bell)

Who did I miss? What TV characters do you look to for fashion? Are there shows you watch as much for the fashion as the plot?

make my list monday 2.0

That’s right folks! An entire week has gone by since mmlm’s introduction… and it’s time to check in!

And how did I do on last week’s list? Pretty well, I think! Highlights include organizing my desk, lots of time enjoying the outdoors, and some kitchen projects!

Wine rack- organized!

All that remains are a few things which I will shift right onto this week’s list:

1. Finish Bossypants– perhaps I should just make this into “make any progress on Bossypants.”

2. Plan anniversary with man-go-round

3. Magical birthday party costume (ideas? anyone?)

and now for the new stuff!

4. Introduce new topic for this blog for August! Tune in tomorrow!

5. Watch more Undeclared and Good Eats (Alton Brown) borrowed from library.

6. Tackle this music selection and find more new music to listen to (favorite song heard this week? Rumor has it, by Adele. Awesome).

Including The Boss, Pink, Vampire Weekend, Liz Phair, Justice, Beck, Raconteurs, Oldies, and more!

7. Attempt to make another dried fruit/ fruit chip (bananas? apples?) and another dessert hummus variation.

8. Attend friend’s comedy show at the Fringe Festival

9. Work on Spain story  (at least one sit-down).

10. Spend quality time with my momma! (Zoo? bird-watching? Playing with nieces? shopping?)

So there you have it! I intend to spend a lot of time also watching the cardinals in the nest outside our upstairs window, and keeping my eye out for that tiny yellow finch!

Now who wants to join me and add their list? What do you have planned for the week?
