Knotty by Nature (Macra-made in heaven)

Hey y’all. As some of you  may know, sometimes my favorite part of blogging is coming up with these horribly cheesy titles for you to read! Man-go-round called these titles “double face palm.” Whatever.

Speaking of cheese, I just returned from the co-op and am proud of all my “adventurous” new purchases. Ever since trying and eventually loving the lefsa I bought made somewhere in Wisconsin, I’ve been venturing out a bit more! Today’s purchases included some bulk nutritional yeast flakes (I have been meaning to try this for forever but never tried it before), some mochi (maybe for breakfast tomorrow as an excuse to use the oven?) and a new flavor of Kettle Chips- Sweet Onion. We tried them and decided that they are definitely sweet and definitely oniony! Works for me!

I also am in the midst of baking round two of the cookies I made last night. This time I’m varying a few things, and I’m going to try out these little cookie cutters purchased at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago:

I think Babar the Elephant is my favorite!

So by now you’re probably wondering why I’m blathering on about my grocery list and when I’ll explain  the very punny titles…

Thanks to my ever cool and crafty mother, I grew up in the midst of gorgeous macrame crafts and designs. When my mom was a lass younger than I, she took on this then popular, now sort of nerdy hobby and turned it into an entrepreneurial adventure. What she has in marketing, ambition, and social savvy, I make up for in experimenting and not following the instructions!

As with all crafts I begin, I usually choose them as an outlet for stress relief and  something to do while chatting with da man or listening to music (today’s choice is Eric Clapton, Lay down sally in case you’re wondering).

Sure, I’ve gotten a few books from the library, but mostly I’ve just been experimenting making my own patterns. I find macrame incredibly rewarding at this very casual level because I don’t have to count knots/ stitches, etc, I can’t mess it up since I’m in the experimentation stage, and it’s virtually cost free as I’ve been using yarn from garage sales instead of the thick and musky ropes usually associated with this craft.

The results thus far have been a few wrist cuff/ bracelets, a headband, and some chunky bookmarks. But the most important part is how much I like doing it, and that I am reminded of my momma and her giant circular and patterned wall hangings. Here’s a sample of a few patterns I made up.

Maybe one day I’ll expand in talent and scale like my momma. Or even like the giant 20 foot piece I saw at a retro furniture shop in California (but probably not… what sort of atelier would I need to inhabit to house this beast?)

For now, however, I’m “knot” taking it any further than hobby time.

Have you tried knotting crafts or macrame? What do you do to unwind if not craftery?

Happy Friday!
Meri
