Never too old to get "carded"

Nope, this isn’t a blog post about the time I got carded at the Mall of America about their “no one under 16 after 7:00 on weekends” or something rule (I was 23 or so at the time… nice…)

This is a post about card making! We’re headed to a friend’s birthday party in a few hours so I had to run through my card stash to pick one out, so I figured today would be an appropriate day to do a paper-cutting card post!

It’s no secret that I love making cards. Birthday cards, Christmas cards, thank you notes, friendly anytime notes, and more (soon you’ll see how I make Valentines too !) I love using random paper and magazine “textiles” that I can recycle or use from around the house, and cutting and gluing them into gaudy, colorful submission.

In the past 5 years or so, I’ve gone through stages of types of cards I’ve made. The most persistent “theme” thus far has been overlapping collage “snowflakes” made mostly from magazine ads and pretty wrapping paper or other scraps.

Metallic wrapping paper or high-end designer ads from Vogue are probably my favorite, as they are shiny, or pretty, or leopard print…

As you can see, I also went through a phase of magazine petal flowers- a little more girly than the snowflakes, so it makes choosing one for a dude a bit more difficult (my dilemma this evening).

And finally, some Thank Yous. Although this year’s notes were straight up penguins cut out from wrapping paper from a gift someone gave me (thank you whoever you were!), In previous years I was a bit more purposeful. Hence the peacock feathers tied to the note with twine…

My older sister may recognize the flowers on the bottom right note as the front part of the stationary she used to use (I always keep the notes even when I deconstruct other peoples’ cards though!)

So there you have it! Snowflake cutting is zen for me, a craft to do pretty much anywhere. All you need is a scissors and some glue, and some papers to deconstruct.

Do you like making homemade cards or do you prefer the panache of letterpress notes and stationery? Or maybe you like straight up Hallmark cards or e-cards?

Tomorrow I’ll post the cookie recipe I’ve been talking about, and very soon I’ll be doing my first ever giveaway!

Happy Saturday~ Meri
