I feel like doing something a little different tonight for Make My List Monday. There have been a lot of exciting ideas and changes in my personal life lately, and so tonight, rather than share my to-do list for the upcoming week, I want to pretend it’s still the weekend and live in fantasy land.
Since I just saw a commercial for Disney World (I’m trying to watch the Bachelor although its pretty dreadfully boring again), I wanted to make a list of the top Disney Princesses and female characters(of my heydey, that is. I stopped watching somewhere between Pocahantas and Mulan) and to put my two cents in about which princesses rock, and which I find awfully useless. Feel free to weigh in your OWN thoughts!

The best:
- Belle (Beauty and the Beast). Bookish, feisty, family oriented, but kind and affectionate… um, I think I may have modeled myself after her all of these years? Be honest, we all want to be Belle. But with Gaston, not Beast.
- Ariel (The Little Mermaid) Okay, so this little lady sure gets herself into some predicaments. But she’s strong-willed, funny, optimistic, and daring. Plus, who doesn’t want her fiery red hair?
- Jasmine (Aladdin) Forget Kelly Clarkson, Jasmine was the original Miss Independent. Forget Aladdin too, she would have been a wise and fair sultaness I think!
The meh:
- Cinderella. Look, I admire the girl’s work ethic. But for pete’s sake, grow a pair Cindyrelly!
- Pocahantas. Loyal, loving, spiritual. Those are the pros. Boring, passive, forgettable are the cons.
The worst:
- Alice (Alice in Wonderland) She takes her advice from anonymous notes she finds and clinically insane rabbits? and then she continues on taking the advice of drugged up cats and caterpillars? She digs her own grave, or hole, or whatever, in my opinion. Her ONE upside? Killer headband, lady. I covet.
- Nala (the Lion King) Be honest- does she serve any function besides getting Simba in trouble?
- Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and Snow White- oh, I’M sorry- did I lump two characters together? Perhaps its because they are so dreadfully stupid, boring, and forgettable that the only thing I can remember about either is something about being asleep until woken up by the Prince with a kiss. Oh, I just fell asleep while thinking about it. oops!
I focused just on Disney ladies tonight to keep things under a manageable word limit, but there have been some great other chicas in animation that bear recognition: Fiona from Shrek, and the heroine from the new movie (I think Pixar) coming out this year called Brave. I probably won’t post about them, though. I’ll focus instead on DISNEY WITCHES AND EVIL FEMALE CHARACTERS…. which are arguably more interesting than the princesses and goody goodies anyway. Ursula anyone?
What do you think of the Disney Princesses/ Lead Females? Have I offended anyone with my distaste for Aurora or Nala? Which characters did you grow up loving?
Meri

I grewup loving the live action Disney movies, and none of the princesses can compete with The Parent Trap.
I don’t know if you mean Hayley Mills or Lindsey Lohan, but I love both versions!
I agree with your list! Though I do love me some Nala, I can’t lie about that. I don’t care how pointless she is…
I’d add Mulan and Meg from “Hercules” into your awesome, kick ass princess list though. Truly, you must watch both of those, even if you’re not a kid anymore.
And oh my, that picture is… well, it just is…
I remember Meg, but I haven’t seen Mulan. I’ll watch it 🙂
Ooooh! Love this post!! As a younger girl, I had a major debate between who I loved better: Belle or Jasmine. I can even remember that one time, my parents took me to get a Barbie for good grades and I had a terrible time deciding whether I wanted Barbie Jasmine or Barbie Belle….major life dilemma, right? 😉 Anyway, I chose Jasmine…probably because she was wearing a cute, minty, I dream of Jeannie style outfit. Ha.
Here’s my list of faves:
1. Belle (she wins. I mean, the girl loves books.)
2. Jasmine (I’m still swooning over those sultaness style frocks. and that long pretty hair. Plus Aladdin was my cartoon boyfriend for sure.)
3. Cinderella ( I just love her. And feel a tad sorry for her.)
4. Rapunzel (that girl’s got spunk!)
I’ll give little Alice a break, because perhaps she’s the youngest of the bunch? And quite naive. But Snow…now she is a snooooooozefest. zzzzzzzzzzzzz.
haha- I had an Ariel barbie and boy did I love her!
This is the maternal part of me showing through…but I LOVE SNOW WHITE!!!! It’s the tending to the cottage and singing and pie baking. hahaha.
Oh. And I love the dangle of the personal life changes! What a tease!! PS TAG. You’re it!

I suppose there could be something very zen about snow. She’s very big in pop culture now- once upon a time, mirror mirror, snow white and the hunts man…
no, Belle totally wins in my book with Ariel a tough second choice.
I just borrowed Aladdin recently and forgot how much I loved that movie, but more because I love the genie!
and plus that bird….Jaffar’s bird he so cracks me up.
my son’s (the teenager) first crush was Belle because he “met” her at Disneyland when he was 5. She trekked him all over Disneyland looking for the Beast. He was smitten.
plus I always wanted to be one of those girls that worked at Disneyland dressed as a princess waving to little kids.
FUN
better than stapling my thumb at work all day!
xoxo
yes yes do witches.
Iago! he is the best! I always did his voice to drive my sisters crazy hahaha
Love this- I had so much fun at Disney World as a child AND as an adult! 🙂
Its fun to just be dorky and like a kid!
I like Mulan as probably the most admirable and I really like Alice in Wonderland the story/movie. Rapunzel is pretty great too but my favorite Disney princess is Libby, no question! Did you get my text about a bday party for Mick, I might have an old number of yours-
Eric
I can’t wait until I can watch Disney (and probably much better Pixar, etc.) films with Sylvia! She’s a little princess already like her mama. I did get your text, sorry I’m so behind, Corey and I have been a little under the weather this week and we weren’t able to come but I wanted to!
No problem I was just worried you didn’t get the invite. That party happens every Wed night so if you’re ever in the mood for an 80’s dance party, get a hold of Mick he’s a regular. They play the best music, new wave, deep tracks, etc… Oh and ditto on watching Disney movies with Sylv, she has a great sense of humor and it’s super funny when she laughs. We’ve shown her a few elmo you tube vids since she fell in love with him after reading sesame street books.
Eric
that might be fun! I do sure love me some 80s music!
Belle all the way! I also was a big little mermaid fan, but it sucks that she has to lose her voice. Jasmine is gorgeous, but kind of a bitch, sorry. I agree on your notes re: snow, aurura, nala, pocah, and cinderella. Jury is still out for me on Alice tho. Something about that trippy show makes me want to come back for more.
yeah, jasmine was a bitch, but I think that’s why I liked her. She didn’t fall all over herself letting everyone take advantage of her and living with the fawns and squirrels…
