Signature Style

My last several Travelin’ Thursday posts have been related to Arizona, as that was my most recent traveling experience. I still haven’t even nearly exhausted my tales from that trip, but tonight I want to revisit a fall excursion I took with some of the lovely ladies in my family to that midwestern mecca- Chicagoland!

Our stay in the windy city was brief this time around, but it was a whirlwind. Since my last time there, my cousin and his wife have moved to the city, and so we wanted to meet up with them and meet their baby boy (my second cousin? once removed?) as well. When trying to decide a meeting place, we settled upon the Hancock Tower’s Signature Room so that we could kill two birds (socializing and touristing) with one stone.

Up on the 95th floor we enjoyed catching up with family and a surprisingly affordable lunch. There was a buffet available which I believe was even more reasonable, but we instead went for salads, sandwiches, and some delicious beverages. As our meal was winding down we wandered around the perimeter of the cafe/ lounge out over the city; discussing The Devil in the White City and looking where my cousin pointed out their neighborhood.

After we left the restaurant, we traveled on to a really neat church and hoofed it to the Art Institute. We parted ways with my cousins there and then went on to happy hour, and then happy hour, and then jazzzzzz. Those are stories for another day though. Today I just wanted to share the view with you.

Have you ever dined way up above it all like this?

Green Machine

This last week, things have really been shooting up around the Minne-Apple (that’s Minneapolis to you outsiders). In honor of this early spring, I decided to take a series of photos of the bushes in our ‘hood so that you could all watch the flora explode with me. Within 7 days, look how much things grew:

Yay! Now to further celebrate, as well as to uphold the dignity of “Wordy Wednesday,” here is a list of every shade of green I can think of:

Kelly, Chartreuse, Emerald, Celery, Mint, Lime, Forest, Puce, Honeydew, Teal, Turtle, Spring, Fern,  Olive, Avocado, Jade, Neon, Hunter, Sea foam, Camo, Jungle, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Army, Celadon, Apple, Malachite, Peridot, Asparagus, Pine, Clover

Did I forget any shades of green? Are things popping up where you live? What is your favorite “crayola” (meaning: specific) hue or color?

Salvage Stirfry

Hey folks! Happy Tasty Tuesday! I have to say the goings-on in my kitchen earlier this evening were less than savory (man-go-round and salmonellized the region blowing out eggs to decorate for Easter). Last weekend, however, I performed a kitchen experiment that could essentially be called, “kitchen sink dinner,” “not rot pot,” or “no plan whatsoever.” In the interest of alliteration, though, I dub it henceforth as “salvage stirfry.”

I eat a ton of produce, so my veggies pretty much never go bad. Ever. However, man-go-round was out of town and had just bemoaned to me that he was concerned some of the veggies in there were past their prime. So, to surprise him for when he got home I did some choppin’, dicin’, fryin’. and seasonin’. Lo and behold, just a half hour later I had three batches of Salvage Stirfry whipped up!

The rules? In the immortal (mortal?) words of Celebrity Death Match, “there are no rules.” Simply chop up any veggies that are starting to wilt, heat up a little oil (I used grapeseed, but peanut, canola, sesame or olive oil should really be just fine too for this purpose), and get going!

After the oil has heated, throw in the heartiest veggies first (broccoli, carrots, celery) and the lightest last (mushrooms, spinach). I usually add garlic towards the end so that it doesn’t burn. As I go, I add either more oil, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, or other sauces. Always hot sauce. I also salt, pepper, garlic powder (if no fresh available) and add ginger or curry powders as I please. Mix it up people!

Now you have a delicious veggie mix to throw on top of rice, in a burrito, with some pasta and sauce, or just on its own.

What do you create with your endangered veggies? Soup? Stirfry? Salad? Do you forget to use produce or do you always run out like I do?

poetry in motion

Happy Monday out there, Meri-Goes-Round Readers. Today might be cold and rainy, but last week was quite warm and sunny, and I went on a stroll through St. Paul with man-go-round before dark one evening. Along the way, there was plenty of enchantment:

As the sun went down over the east side, we came across this sidewalk square, which I assumed must be part of the St. Paul Sidewalk Poetry Contest. This contest was started by the city to both repair the sidewalks and infrastructure but also to inject a little life and beauty into every day. The winners were cemented in various locations around the city. Here are a few of my favorites from the website.

A little less war,
A little more peace,
A little less poor,
A little more eats.

Eyang Wu

Cutout Sky

Cut the trees
out of the sky
with your silver
scissors.

Tear the rain
from the faint
shapes of bruised
clouds with your open
hands.

Weave the thin
strands of rain
through the branches
like pearls
melting against dark
silhouettes.

I wanted to tell you the name of the street
where I crashed my bicycle, got my best scar
or how I went walking at sunrise
to see dawn’s great evacuation of stars.
There must be some method, when two people meet,
to explain to each other who we really are.
Play me a song, Trumpet Man
Sorrow sings deep in my bones
I ache to feel it out loud
Wail, Trumpet Man
Drown this city in brassy tears
Beat in my blood
Pump the anger and hurt out my heart
Wash it away in the slippery sewer
Swirl it down down in your long last note

Those are a few of my favorites from the website. I’ve only seen the one (so far) in person, but I’ve heard of others who have been seeing them around the last year or so.

What do you think about poetry? Do you read it or write your own? Do you have a favorite poem? Which of the ones I chose do you like best?

I sift through each piece
poetry ‘tween my fingers
writing my haiku
(subtitle: be glad I stuck to a short haiku and didn’t share one of my melodramatic teenage emo poems…)

“Single” Saturday

No no mom don’t fret- man-go-round and I are not splitting up. I’m referring, instead, to the fact that due to man-go-round going on a day trip to see his family today, I spent the day doing things all by myself, and enjoying quite a productive day I must say!

I remember a SATC episode where the ladies describe their “secret single behavior.” Carrie’s involves eating saltines standing up in the kitchen while reading vogue, Charlotte stares at her pores in a mirror, Miranda wears gloves with lotion in them, and Samantha… is Samantha.

What does a Meri do? Well, if today was any indication, I:

  • Slept in
  • Did yoga/ strength moves
  • Wrote my bi-weekly column and submitted it
  • Worked on craft project for upcoming baby shower
  • Made a 3-batch stir fry out of veggies of man-go-round’s in danger of going bad
  • Walked to the co-op taking photos
  • Read a magazine (Ladies Home Journal)
  • Went to Target
  • Talked to my mom
  • Chatted with a neighbor
  • Pinterest…

And the day is still relatively young. Right now man-g0-round has returned and we’re watching the Wild (tie game). Later on I plan to play around on Picasa, read one of my library books (Paris was ours or The Passion of Artemisia), try out my new Luna flavor (Peanut Pretzel Honey) and lounge and dance in my PJs. Even though I’m not playing the “single” game anymore, who is to say I can’t carry the spirit of it on through the rest of the weekend?

What kinds of things do you enjoy doing on a Saturday or Sunday when you’re all alone with no plans with family or friends?

This bridge “rocks”

Careful, readers… horribly cheesy dangerous puns ahead!

On this rainy March day, and Travelin’ Thursday at that, I thought I’d reflect on a recent sunny adventure in Payson, Arizona. About a 90 minute drive from Phoenix, Payson was our destination due to its proximity to the Mogollon Rim. (After asking literally dozens of locals, we are now somewhat comfortable and confident that the pronunciation is something like “MA-gee-un.” But don’t quote me on that…

We spent some time thrifting/ poking around on Payson’s Main Street, and we stopped for a bite at Macky’s Grill (delightfully tacky western decor and all), but the majority of our Payson adventures were spent at Tonto Natural Bridge State Park.

Enter today’s title. What “rocks” about this place? Well, the Tonto Natural Bridge is made of Travertine, a type of limestone, and I believe it is the largest Travertine bridge in the world. That DOES rock, doesn’t it! You know what else rocks? At the top of this park there is a waterfall that cascades down across the side of the bridge (seen below as the “hole” in the rock), and on the sunny day we visited it was creating a lovely rainbow for us! We hiked down to the bottom where more daring visitors were standing beneath the waterfall and jumping rocks in the creek. As we hiked up to the top we found tiny mountain wildflowers, coniferous trees, and even some form of bamboo or hollow stackable plant that we used to play with in our Brainerd area lake cabin (if you know what that is called, in the photo below, let me know!)

All in all it was a beautiful trip with an enjoyable drive through central Arizona. Enjoy the photos!

Do you have any travel plans coming up? Are there special places to hike where you live?

Sugar Bowled Over

Okay, so I’ve been incessantly making you guys vote for your favorite candies for about a month now. We started out with lots and lots of candies and chocolates:

and early on, my favorites (m&ms, candy corn, gummy bears) were crushed by not favorites (whoppers? skittles? REALLY??)… so when it came down to the end, I was able to remain impartial and not include my own votes or get too excitable-like with ya’ll.

So in the end, was it the chocolate side, led by Twix… or the candy side, led by Skittles, that went onward to victory?

By a landslide, Twix wins it all! Chocolate lovers unite- the glory is yours! And for the rest of us candy and sugar loving fools? Well, more for us, I guess!

A great big sincere thank you to everyone for playing along- sometimes life just needs a silly little diversion, right? It was fun because you all played and voted. Did you have anything sweet and sugary today?

Thank you!

I’ll be back tomorrow with some Travelin’ Tales!

Acting Flaky

Hi there, and a happy Tasty Tuesday to anyone and everyone out there! Last week at the co-op I decided to try a new product: Quinoa flakes. Similar in nutrition to oatmeal or oatbran, it is moderate in protein and fiber and generally looked pretty similar to what I often eat on a daily basis. However, I can’t resist trying a product I haven’t tried before, so I bought it.

I went to the kitchen, and followed the easy (microwave) instructions. Since I wanted to compare it to how I make oatmeal and oat bran (almost always in the microwave) I figured that would be the fairest comparison. The verdict? Yep, tastes pretty much the same. Oh well, now I know!

And now, for something a little less healthful… I give you your FINAL warning to vote for the Sugarbowl Finals! The winner will be announced tomorrow! If you haven’t voted yet, who is it gonna be?

Who is it gonna be? Have you ever tried quinoa flakes? Do you eat oat meal or oat bran regularly? What about grits or cream of rice?

Pip Pip Hooray!

Yesterday man-go-round and I drove uptown to meet my sister and her two lovely girls at the American Swedish Institute, a lovely and charming museum set in a mansion which displays exhibits and decor of Swedish culture and heritage (none of which, I believe, I have running through my veins).

Inside, they had some stellar exhibits and rooms on display: Like Josef Frank’s Designs…

and Nordic woodcarving…

the carpets, woodwork, and stoves in the mansion:

That beauty is in the museum gift shop, hence the Stieg Larsson books resting on top… and finally, the primary reason for our visit… the hero of the South Seas… Pippi Longstocking!

Yes, we sure love our Pippi in my family! Although none of us wore costumes, I sure did consider it.

On this perfect sunny Sunday (and due to the fact that we got museum passes for free from the library), it was an outing I’ll be repeating soon in the future, as not only was the mansion itself beautiful but each exhibit was also pretty interesting.

But until you have a chance to visit… if you haven’t already, vote in the SUGARBOWL FINALS!!! I’m leaving the voting open until I post on Wednesday, so no excuses this time!

Skittles vs. Twix for the ultimate title between chocolate and candy!

What is your heritage/ background? Do you have a strong cultural identity? Do you enjoy learning about other cultures even if it isn’t your own?

Munch Madness: Sugarbowl Final Round

Well we had another day of 80 degree sunny weather. In March. In Minnesota. I don’t know how long this is gonna last, but the flowers are poppin’ up all over the place already!

Okay, okay, so that last picture is veggies… but you see Spring Fever is really going around, and it isn’t even technically Spring until Wednesday!

Another thing putting a “spring” in my step today is that we’re FINALLY down to the final match of the Sugarbowl… This is the end of the line, people: Which is it gonna be? Smooth velvety chocolate or sweet sugary candy? I’m going to leave this vote open for a couple of days to make sure everyone who wants to vote gets a chance!

Representing chocolate: Twix

Taking the lead on the candy side per yesterday’s vote: Skittles

So that means our last vote for the SugarBowl Candy Crown is:

Twix vs. Skittles!

Now rock the vote! What did you do this weekend?
