The Rules of Readability

I stayed in bed until a leisurely noon or afterwards today, finishing up this book:

source

Briefly, Rules of Civility by Amor Towles is about (more generally) the highs and lows of society in Manhattan in the last 1930s and (more subtly) youth, social status, glamour, choices, nostalgia, and opportunity.

The heroine is Katey Kontent, who is almost immediately likable, a trait that carries itself to the very last page. She navigates her Manhattan world with guts and ambition and never looks back with regret. This protagonist, though, is not the only reason I enjoyed this book so much. Here are some of the other high points:

Meri’s Rules of Readability (my favorite parts of Rules of Civility):

  • The names: Katey/Katya, Teddy/Tinker, Dicky, Wellie, Wallace, Valentine, Evelyn/Eve, Anne Grandyn… I think I’d read this book for the names alone.
  • The chapter “Neverland.” Its about paper airplanes. Very sophisticated, intricate paper airplanes. There is more meaning behind it than I just described, but the superficial descriptions are just as awesome.
  • Katey. I’ve said it already, but there is pretty much nothing negative about the main character. She’s ambitious without being money or power hungry, she’s down-to-earth (amazed every time someone calls her out on her awesomeness) and she has integrity without being judgmental. She’s an incredibly loyal friend but stands up for herself. Hell, I kind of want to BE her. Plus, her name sounds sort of like a spy, does it not?
  • The Glamour. Sort of a post Gatsby pre Mad Men urban glamour oozes from every page of this book. I enjoyed dipping into this world of nightclubs, diners, high rises and country homes and never came up for air until I finished the last page.
  • It’s Readability. This is not an “intellectual snobs” book, I don’t imagine. Its a very quick read (I finished it before it was due to the library a week before Christmas, as proof). It sucks you in, has half of the dialogue written as a play, and gives multi perspectives in a pretty modern way, I think. I think I’d recommend it to just about anyone with its wide appeal.

Have you read Rules of Civility? What are you reading these days? Who is your favorite literary protagonist or character?

Celebration Nation (part 2)

Last Thursday I went on a trip around the world… well, in my post, anyway…

source

I started a two part quiz series based on Christmas celebrations around the world. First off, here are last week’s answers:

Where in the world…

  1. …Might you find children searching for a gold “Christmas Beetle?” Australia
  2. …Do men  perform the “Palo Voladare,” an act where they plunge from a platform on ropes to honor the sun? Guatemala
  3. …is a “ceppo,” or Christmas Pyramid, displayed? Italy
  4. …Are radishes carved into religious scenes or other figurines for “Night of the Radishes?” Mexico
  5. …Are foil wrapped coins baked into a plum pudding? The UK
  6. …Do people make or purchase dolls shaped like men and women made out of prunes? Germany
So who won? Alyssa and Kristina both got two correct answers, for a two-way tie! What do they win? Um… pride?

And for this week: Here is your quiz!

Where in the world…

  1. …do “Belsnicklers” parade through neighborhoods ringing bells and looking for treats?
  2. …might you see displays of “parols” or star lanterns, and hear firecrackers?
  3. …is a procession including tinsel covered wheels called “stars,” in a tradition called, “Carrying the Star?”
  4. …do people dress as a “Lucia,” in a white gown and red ribbon or a “tomte” (A Christmas gnome)?
  5. …do they play “Ganna” (similar to hockey) or “Yeferas guks” (kind of like polo)?
  6. …might someone wish you, “Hronia Polla” (meaning “many happy years)?

Do they do this in:

  • A. Sweden
  • B. Ethiopia
  • C. Nova Scotia
  • D. Alaska
  • E. Greece
  • F. The Phillipines

So…. what are your guesses? Are you surprised by any of the answers from last week? Last chance to tell me your own traditions or holiday customs!

With a little help from my friends?

I must say, on this particular Wordy Wednesday I’m feeling both wordful and wordless, all at once.

One thing throwing me off is the weather. Not only are we having an unseasonably warm (40 degrees) Minnesota December, its also been incredibly DARK and rainy all day since Monday. It really gets to a gal if she’s making an effort to look on the bright side of things!

But before I go purchase a Vitamin D SAD lamp, I thought I’d try focusing on something that makes me feel light inside- thinking about the organizations, non-profits, and charities that put so much good into the world.

For the holidays this year, my family is starting a new tradition. It is based on an idea I had that I planned to do at my holiday party (before I cancelled it). Here’s the gist:

-Everyone chooses a charity, non-profit, or good-doing organization and writes the name on a piece of paper and puts it in a hat (or bowl, or any device from which to do a drawing).

-Everyone then either writes or puts in an amount of their choosing. It can be anonymous if that is an issue. The point is to donate an amount you feel comfortable with given your financial situation and other yearly charities you might already give to.

-One of the slips of paper is drawn, and the whole pot goes to that one organization.

When we’ve done similar things in my family in the past, I always think the most interesting part is when I learn about charities or organizations I didn’t know much about, and learn about why my friends or family members are so passionate about them. There are a LOT of people doing GREAT things out there!

This year, I’m still narrowing it down. Want to help me? Please do! Place your votes in the comments, and I’ll put serious consideration into it. I’m not saying I won’t make a last minute snap decision, but I’ll factor it in!

Here’s the candidates I’ve narrowed it down to:

-The Hennepin County Library system. Because I can’t imagine a world without free media and access to community resources at my disposal. It is a huge part of my life and I believe in community more than anything else, some days.

Sharing and Caring Hands. (Emergency Food/ Shelter for those in need). Because its run by individuals, not government corruption and confusion. And I think there is something pure about this organization that draws me to it. And during the holidays, I think its the time of year I’m most aware of how good my situation really is.

-The Tree Trust. Do I have to tell you why? Did you read my obnoxious post about the Lorax? (kidding). But seriously, somebody has to take care of the earth. And they do a really good job employing individuals who might have a struggle in the more (ahem) corporate job world.

Which one do you think I should choose? Or should I choose someone else? Leave a comment to let me know your vote! How do you narrow down which organizations you put your money and/or beliefs in and decide which ones are the best?

pa-shunned fruit

It might be getting late, but its still Tuesday where I am. Still tasty Tuesday, that is. Although for this week’s episode, I regret to inform you that things did NOT turn out very tasty after all…

Not too long ago, I saw a bin of passion fruit on sale at the co-op. Passion fruits on sale? What on earth? The reason I had never had one before are because… they are never on sale in Minnesota! But now that they were, what better time to try them…

So I did a quick wiki search on my smart phone to figure out how to pick a ripe one…

dark purple, a bit tender, with a seam down the side. Ripe!

A few days later, I cut it open and scooped out the seeds, ready to try it:

Look how pretty it is!

scooped out of the shell

As I scooped the seeds out, a wonderful, fruity, distinct and familiar scent filled the air. I was now anxiously anticipating the first taste!

poured atop a dish of greek yogurt

but ohhhh no… I brought the dish to the couch, and man-go-round and I dug in.

I am sad to report that despite the delicious fragrance, we were NOT passionate for passion fruit. Too tart even for a whole dish of plain yogurt, not my favorite consistency, and since I opted to keep seeds in rather than sieve them, this “dessert” was barely edible. It didn’t even get finished 🙁

I’m not saying I won’t ever try it again, but perhaps in a sauce… or a smoothie… diluted.

Have you ever been really excited to try a new food, then utterly let down by the reality of it? Do you eat passion fruit or have a way to make it more tasty?

Holiday Film School

Hi folks! we’re sitting here wearing rudolph ears and santa hats watching, “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” on Netflix.

Which inspires me, on this “Make My List Monday,” to make, well, a list. My unadulterated thoughts on holiday films.

Let’s start with the good:

  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Obvs. I’m talking the cartoon version, but I don’t even mind the Jim Carrey version. I just love this story. Only thing I DON’T like? The awful Faith Hill song in the live action version…
  • Elf. How can you not crack a smile at this movie? Will Ferrell is lovable, okay?
  • Love Actually. Sure, its cheesy, but I’m saying that we could all use a little more cheese in our lives around the hectic holidays.
  • Home Alone/ Home Alone 2. Slapstick at its best paired with every kids’ dream home and situation… with a happy ending.
  • The Nightmare before Christmas. Maybe I’m biased because I love Tim Burton. Here comes Sandy Claws…
and I feel like I must mention the bad:
  • The Santa Clause. AGGGGHHHHH HORRIBLE. I can’t believe there are multiple ones in this ridiculous series. I do NOT love Tim Allen.
  • Any movie regarding Christmas that airs on Lifetime or Oxygen. Often there is a down on her luck female who finds love AND magic through SANTA! What the eff? Are we women really supposed to enjoy this smarm? Awful. If you’re looking for cheese, see the category above…
  • Home Alone 3. Um- Macauley Culkin was clearly the magic in this series. What a preposterous idea to replace him and expect it not to suck.
  • Just Friends. Ryan Reynolds is hot. This movie is NOT.
the old school:
  • A Christmas Story. The leg lamp. Flick. Randy wrapped up in his snowsuit like a sausage casing… There is a reason this movie gets played on repeat… Farararara…ra ra ra ra…
  • It’s A Wonderful Life. Is a wonderful movie.
  • White Christmas. Its unhealthy how much I love this film. I have over half of the musical numbers memorized, still.
and I can’t believe how much I liked:
  • Jack Frost. With Michael Keaton. Maybe I was just premenstrual, but I cried more than once at this movie…
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Okay, maybe I’m not that surprised. But its not exactly conventional!
  • The Family Stone. Maybe its because they have a big family and I have a big family… so it feels like home… but we sure aren’t that mean!
and I am afraid to watch…
  • Jingle All the Way. Even thinking about Sinbad gives me hives and makes me remember all of the awful pop culture from middle school…
  • Christmas with the Kranks. Is this a Tim Allen movie too? I’m too afraid to find the answer to that, so I’m not going to google it. But I do have a premonition that he might be.
  • Any version of A Christmas Carol. I’m sorry, the story just scares me.

What are your favorite holiday movies? Are there ones you are embarrassed to enjoy or scared to watch for how bad they might be? Did I miss any?

gingerbread head

Hi all! I hope you had a great weekend! Ours was a whirlwind again, and so for this Sunday night, I thought I’d catch you all up on our progress on the Advent Calendar!

It's getting filled up!

First up is the stocking, which on Tuesday we took to represent St. Nick’s Day. Deciding to forego the treats, we left each other notes before work instead:

A bit of cheer in the morning before work!

On Wednesday, we put the star both on our Advent calendar and on our tree. After craft time star fail, I bought one at Target like a failure. But we love our glitter bomb star now:

Thursday was cookie day, so the “plan” was to each eat a cookie. Man-go-round did pretty well with this. I, on the other hand, went on a cookie bender and couldn’t even look at anything sugary until Saturday night. I’d like to say lesson learned, but I know myself a bit better than that. I think there are more sugar highs to be had before Christmas is on its way out…

Friday we put up the angel and read a Christmas book I had when I was little, “The Littlest Angel.”

Saturday we put up the candle, to symbolize the holiday lights parade we went to:

trolley rides driven by horsies...
Nightmare before Christmas decorations in the windows...
...and fantastic acts in the parade like these snowflake dancers!

Today we went to a fabulous rendition of the Nutcracker Ballet. To get ready, though, we decorated some foam gingerbread men I bought on one of my sprees at Michaels. I’d like to say children made all of these, but some of them definitely were made by adults… and we put the gingerbread symbol on the advent calendar.

gingerbread men and women. No gumdrop buttons whatsoever...

So we’re more than halfway through the Advent Calendar now! I’m looking forward to some more cheesy holiday spirit and activities!

The parade was pretty chilly- what events or activities will you brave the cold for? Do you celebrate St. Nick’s Day? What did you do this weekend?

Heavens to Betsey!

Well hello out there! We’ve made it through to another weekend, which means its time for Feature Friday. As I mentioned last time, for the month of December that means another item on my WISH LIST!

This week, I’ll share three similar items crafted by the fabulous Betsey Johnson that I have been ogling of late…

All three found on amazon.com or at betseyjohnson.com. I fell in love with her earrings and jewelry a few years ago when I yoinked a pair of my momma’s classic crystal heart and black bow earrings and wore them for Christmas. Soon after, I was hooked, and last year for my birthday I ordered for man-go-round man-go-round surprised me with a pair of blue polka dot heart earrings with little gold bows:

aren’t they the cutest? I can’t get enough.  So…

Dear Santa,

I know the Bamboo Tablet I mentioned last time is crazy expensive. Therefore, can we compromise on a fabulous pair of Betsey Johnson earrings?

Meri

Are you a jewelry lover? Are there any brands you go gaga for? What’s on your list for Santa?

Celebration by Nation

Hi everyone! Today is Travelin’ Thursday, but in honor of the holiday season, I thought I’d take a little trip around the world in a two part series called,

Where in the World: Christmas (part 1)

source

I’ll list six Christmas traditions, and six international locations. Do your best and see if you can match the tradition to the country! I got my information from a book called “Christmas Around the World,” by Mary D. Lankford. I’ll be following this up with part 2 of the quiz next Thursday!

Where in the world…

  1. …Might you find children searching for a gold “Christmas Beetle?”
  2. …Do men  perform the “Palo Voladare,” an act where they plunge from a platform on ropes to honor the sun?
  3. …is a “ceppo,” or Christmas Pyramid, displayed?
  4. …Are radishes carved into religious scenes or other figurines for “Night of the Radishes?”
  5. …Are foil wrapped coins baked into a plum pudding?
  6. …Do people make or purchase dolls shaped like men and women made out of prunes?

Do they do this in…

  • A. Italy
  • B. Mexico
  • C. Germany
  • D. Australia
  • E. Germany
  • F. Guatemala

Make your guesses- or tell me your own wacky holiday tradition or something your ancestors did!

Yule like this list!

I was singing today to our tree, as man-go-round put our new star (code name: “glitter bomb”) on top. I started with “O Christmas Tree” and moved onto the more traditional, “O Tannenbaum.”

Me being me, I started to laugh at the name Tannenbaum. It made me think of all of the other silly sounding holiday words there are. So what do I do, being the nerd I am?

Make a list, of course!

Yule laugh at these Goofy Seasonal Words and Expressions:

  • Tannenbaum. What on earth is a Tannenbaum? Well, its a Christmas tree, basically. In German. But its exponentially more fun to say, right?
  • Mistletoe. Okay, I know this is just the name of the plant. But its funny!
  • Figgy Pudding. No mysterious meaning on this one either, but tell me you don’t love to sing this verse of “We wish you a Merry Christmas.”
  • Yule. I just like the long “u.” I’m a simple person.
  • Eggnog. Makes me think of a noggin every time.
  • Wassailing. I’ve been wondering about this one for years. Last year, I explored what it means and where it comes from.
  • tinsel. Not so much silly, just fun to say.
  • Ebeneezer Scrooge. Has there ever been another soul named Ebeneezer? It’s a ridiculous name! Best pronounced with crazy eyes and a six-second third syllable… “Ebeneeeeeeezer Scrooge!” When done right, your voice might crack on the “Scrooge” as well.

What do you think are the funniest holiday words? Do you have any to add to my list?

Pillsburied Alive!

haha… but only in the best possible sense of the words! If I’m going to be buried with something, at least let it be cookies so I could eat my way out of that mess! As promised the other day, tonight I am delivering for Tasty Tuesday with a photo recap of bakestravaganza 2011. For those of you not yet in the holiday spirit, this might help! Or at least get your mouth watering a bit for some seasonal treats…

The cutest little helper...
ornament gift from our hostess with the mostest, Kristin
hard at work
...and even harder at work...
sugar cookie batch
gingerbread batch
making the mixer do the work while we snack, drink, and make merry!
Mixology with the icing- oops there's two greens!
some of the finished products...note the angry gingerbread man in the corner. "Not my gumdrop buttons..."
some more finished cookies- find my black angel and baby shower pink sugar cookie man baby...
I am counting three whole countertops covered in cookies. A job well done, I think!

Thanks again to my friend Kristin (and her precious puppy) for hosting another fun and successful baking day!

If I were a gingerbread cookie, I’d have a pair of Daria glasses and a big ol’ scar on my belly. How would you decorate a cookie to give it your signature style?
