Name that bloom!

Hi there!

Tonight we have an advent calendar recap of the last few days! Last we checked in, we were writing our ridiculous jingle to “12 days of christmas.” Well, the eggnog has worn off, and since then we’ve

Watched Love Actually (the bow symbol representin')
Wrote and stamped our holiday cards
Bought and named our pink poinsettia...

and what did we name her? (yes, its a girl…)

La Rrrrrrosa! Middle initial “K.” You have to roll the r though, or its no fun. Man-go-round wanted to name her “austerity measures” but I guess I used my feminine veto on that one.

Tomorrow- we put our star atop our tree!

What have you been doing to get ready for the holidays so far? Do you ever name your plants? (or cars, or belongings…)?

A thin line between hate and love, actually

It’s Sunday night again already, and we were graced with a few inches of snow over the weekend.

After a day well spent baking at a friend of mine’s home (more on that another day), I was ready to curl up by the fire (although we didn’t turn it on) with man-go-round to watch the modern holiday classic, Love Actually.

If you haven’t seen this movie already, go rent it/ download it/ buy it.

If you have seen it (which I’m guessing you have, its quite popular…) here is a Meri style list to break down the best and worst characters in this ensemble dramedy.

Source, actually

I Love, Actually:

  • Colin Firth’s unlucky in love writer. Because its Colin Firth, and we all love him, even if we don’t believe that anyone would ever cheat on him.
  • Billy Mack. If you say you don’t love this has been oldster trying to sing the worst cover song earworm of all time, you’re lying. I just don’t believe you. Also, his manager. Probably the best storyline in the movie.
  • Colin Frissel. One of three characters whose name I actually know, this is the guy who believes the problem for him is BRITISH women, so he goes to Wisconsin to find love. And boy, does he… I mostly just like to laugh at his teeth, though.
  • Monica Lewinsky Natalie, Hugh Grant’s secretary or something. I think we all love her, she looks like one of the Whos from the Grinch book. She is the other character whose name I know. Oh, and she swears a lot, which I like.
  • Hugh Grant’s (Blair-esque) prime minister. An obvious choice, but he’s pretty likeable here.
  • Liam Neeson’s widower stepdad character. Not because he’s handsome, but because he keeps it real and swears around his kid.
  • Liam Neeson’s stepson, in the exact moment of the movie (see below), because he’s pretty ridiculously adorable, at least for five more minutes…
  • The stand-in actors who date. They are kind of cute.
  • Bill Clinton Billy Bob Thornton’s “fictional” cocky southern American President. Because for some reason I just like Billy Bob Thornton, and he plays a creep pretty well.

I Hate, Actually:

  • Severus Snape Alan Rickman’s creepy wandering eye boss.
  • Alan Rickman’s creepy character’s whiny wife who loves Joni Mitchell. Wah wah wah.
  • Laura Linney’s ridiculous character who doesn’t believe she can date because her brother is institutionalized. Um, find a better excuse to not go out with the model guy.
  • The dumb as rocks model guy Laura Linney obsesses over but won’t actually… make time for. Because you only get ONE POSSIBLE SHOT with someone you see every day. Right. Anyway, this guy is hot but dumb and boring.
  • The Portuguese housekeeper.
  • The entire Kiera Knightly/ husband/ creepy stalker best friend triangle. And no, the whole Bob Dylan words on cards montage is not endearing, its cheesetastic.
  • The creepy vampire woman who hits on Alan Rickman and walks around all dressed up alone in her apartment.
  • The kid who loves the American girl, two years from now. I don’t think he’s probably very cute anymore…

Have you seen Love, Actually? Who are your favorite (or most hated) characters/ story lines? Have you curled up with a holiday movie or book yet?

…and a partridge in a Mer tree…

Happy Friday! Praise BE that its the weekend! This week was rough, and in need of a little humor and warmth around here for me. I thought I’d share a little Advent Calendar antics from the last few days:

Today was the Santa hat symbol. I deemed that to be worthy of a reading of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” under blanket cover after work. Man-go-round supplied his own rhymes to the end of several stanzas. I wish I could recreate it, but I was too busy appreciating the illustrations, which I just adore:

the Grinch, himself, carving the roast beast!

Yesterday, after operation Star Fail (more on that another day), I decided that since we had already read/ sung in falsetto “the 12 days of Christmas” as illustrated by Jan Brett, that we should commit to the bird symbol and write our OWN 12 days of Christmas, peppered with items related to present or past holiday seasons between Man-go-round and I. Some jokes you guys might know, some are likely only funny to us. Nonetheless, here it is in all its glory:

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…

12 cans of ice house

11 trips to mailbox (I really really like snail mail)

10 squirrel squatters (the last home, not this one…)

9 Christmas cookies (more like 9000)

8 ice scrapers

7 broken shovels (you may recall my ordeal from last winter)

6 (hundred) snowflakes (I like to craft… a lot…)

5 bowwwllls of jellloooooo

4 cardinals

3 Christmas sticks (I could never attempt to explain this, its far too stupid for the general public to be exposed to)

2 Holly Bollies (for you, dad)

and ONE MORE MERI *&%#-mas (uh, man-go-round’s name is anonymous)

So, I have to explain that it is VERY much ingrained in my genetic coding to make cheesy versions of songs with their own lyrics. Have you guys ever done this before? Oh, and in the book I had it said it was “colly birds,” not “calling birds” like I had always thought. Have you guys ever heard of this? Is the book crazy or am I?

What would be included in your own personal “12 days of Christmas,” (or winter, or Hannukah, etc.)

Baby its cold outside

Hi guys. Today, December 1st, I woke up and opened the shades to see snow on the ground. For some reason, this year the impending cold and wintery weather has me even more on the defense than ever. Faced with a cloudy, chilly day, I closed my eyes and took a little snooze before I got up for good. This is the place that I pictured:

San Sebastian, Spain (Isla Santa Clara with Monte Igeldo in the background)

I haven’t been to Spain in years, but I’m going to spend my winter socking away money and PTO and dreaming of warmer locales. Rome, Argentina, Costa Rica (and more realistically, Arizona).

When the weather changes and gets cold, do you daydream of beaches and sunshine? What dreamy places are on your minds as winter marches in?

Marshmallow Girl

Hello Friends! For this edition of Wordy Wednesday, I thought I’d share a bit about what we’ve been doing with our Advent Calendar thus far!

Day one, we put up our tree, and added the tree symbol to represent it:

Day two, we decorated the tree. Here’s the first ornament we put up- a doll made out of banana fibers given to me by man-go-round’s grandma last year!

Day three, we put the heart symbol on the tree. This meant we were each to do something nice for someone else. For my part, I wrote a nice note on a dollar bill and stuck it in one of my favorite books at the library. I hope it will brighten someone’s day (someone with similar literary taste as me…)

Day 4 was today. We put on the bell symbol this morning which we deemed, “holiday music day.” Before work, we each got to pick a song. I chose “marshmallow world,” by Brenda Lee, because its charming. Man-go-round chose “the most offensive christmas song ever” from South Park. Luckily for me, the song stuck in my head all day was Marshmallow World, or I might have had some explaining to do at work…

In case you haven’t heard the latter, here is a link. Disclaimer: if you find this offensive, its not like the title isn’t warning enough…

The Most Offensive Christmas Song Ever (by Mr. Hanky)

What is your favorite holiday song? Do you try to do charity or good deeds around the holidays more than other times of year? Do you have a favorite ornament?

“Pump” it up!

Hi Folks! Short post tonight, because I want to dig into the Christmas books I got from the library- Angelina’s Christmas, The Night Before Christmas, Christmas in the Big Woods (Laura Ingalls Wilder. Represent yo), The Grinch, and more.

Before I curl up with these classics, though, I wanted to share a new product I just discovered the other night, for Tasty Tuesday!

As some of you may know, I tend to eschew doughy or fluffy breads (its a texture thing. They disappear like mush in your mouth. ugh.) Instead, I prefer dense and chewy breads. I like bagels (done right), tortillas, and any breads with lots of nuts. I typically buy these flax seed wraps, but when I saw pumpernickel wraps, I had to grab them. Never mind that they were probably like 4 dollars because I bought them at Lunds/Byerlys (am I the only one that still has to remind herself that they merged?)

The verdict? Totally worth the money. Chewy, nice and thin, but didn’t break. Slightly sweet, but full of flavor. Okay, I just walked over my purse, and checked the receipt. They were $2.99 and there were four in the package. 75 cents is a bit steep for a wrap, so I guess I’ll have to have them be “special occasion bread” like the Rudy’s Cinnamon Raisin bagels I so enjoy, but only buy when they are on sale.

Do you have particular types of bread that you prefer or will only eat? Or do you just see it as a vehicle for whatever you put on it? Have you tried pumpernickel or other specialty (spelt, oat, etc.) wraps before?

Merry Making and Meri Baking

Hi friends! Today is Monday, which around here means I make LISTS!

After an office discussion today turned cookie-licious, I thought “what better way to kick off the holiday season of lists… than with a cookie list!” So here it is: The best holiday cookies, as I see it.

Meri’s Must Eat Holiday Cookies!

Grandma Clara’s Christmas Cookies– Don’t mess with the best. These sugar cookies are legendary around our house. Cutouts with a thin icing and sprinkles on top, we usually eat these frozen. Strange but delicious!

Gingerbread cookies– All family traditions and abovementioned family recipes aside, I think gingerbread cookies are my favorite food in the entire world. Plus, they are fun to decorate.

Peppermint meringues– I only recently started making these, but they are so fun to make (with a makeshift ziplock “piping bag”) and you get to smash candy canes to bits to make them!

Runners up:

-Cornflake/ Corn Syrup/ Red hot wreaths

-Peanut butter cookies with Hershey’s Kisses on top

-“Candy Cane” shaped red and white twisted cookies with almond flavoring

What is your favorite holiday cookie? Do you have a baking tradition or exchange with family or friends?

Calendar Girl

I’ve been waiting all week (since we purchased it) to put up our brand new “reusable” (PC for artificial) Christmas tree.

Today, we got out of bed, cranked up some tunes, and put up the tree in our PJs. Why today? Well, the way I interpret it, today is also the first day of Advent. and with the completion of my homemade Advent calendar (aka the point I decided to stop adding stuff to it), we were all set to start some holiday traditions.

So today, we put up the calendar…

…and here are its remaining pieces…

So today, since we picked the “tree” symbol for our calendar, we put up the tree! Each symbol in the calendar will correspond to a holiday activity. Here are some of my ideas so far:

  • Cookies: Bake or decorate Christmas cookies
  • Angel: Remember someone who has passed away or our of our lives
  • Santa hat: Read or watch the Grinch
  • Candle: Walk around looking at holiday lights and decorations
  • Heart: Do something nice for someone else

Do you guys make Advent Calendars? What sort of things should I do with my other symbols/ other days? Are you gearing up for the holidays too now that Thanksgiving is over?

An “inkling” of an idea

Okay, so a few nights ago I made the mistake of flipping through man-go-round’s Wired magazine, and found myself looking through the “Holiday Wish List” section. While ogling all of the goodies, I had an idea for this blog.

From now until Christmas, I’ll share one or more of my holiday wish list items on my Feature Fridays. Some will be more realistic, some will be not so realistic.

Tonight, I’m going for “near” realistic (aka I might be able to find a more affordable version that comes close). This is the little guy I saw in Wired, and now find myself unable to stop obsessing over.

The Wacom Inkling

So- its basically a stylus that writes on regular (not specially bought) paper, to be transmitted to your computer. I would start listing the things I want to do with this pen… but I’ve been restricting myself from fantasizing about it too much because I don’t need it for my career so its kind of frivolous. This particular guy is $199.

What is on your holiday wishlist? Have you used something like the Inkling before?

Give ’em the bird

No no no-I’m not advocating that you all go out and flip someone off! Well, maybe if they really deserve it…

No, my purpose on this Tasty Tuesday is to give support to all of those vegetarians out there trying to survive Thanksgiving around all of its Turkey Bird loving, meaty goodness. I have no problem with people enjoying savory meats and preparing all sorts of gizzards and guzzards and buzzards… but what should the rest of us eat?

Over my 26 1/2 vegetarian years, I’ve spent some Thanksgivings surviving on dinner rolls and gravy free mashed potatoes, and I’ve spent others immersed in a feast of vegetables, carbs, and flavors in full abundance. What do I choose now that I know better? The incredible feast, of course! So if you need a little inspiration, this list will get you started!

Don’t be a birdbrain just because you don’t eat Turkey: Veggie Thanksgiving

-Potato Lasagna-Layer sweet potato slices, sauteed leeks/garlic, and Yukon potato slices over and over like you would lasagna. Bake for about an hour at 375 on a greased sheet of aluminum foil inside a round baking dish. When potatoes are tender, invert dish onto a plate and remove foil. Voila! Beautiful Carby goodness!

-Mean Mr. Mustard’s Brussel’s Sprouts -Steam brussels sprouts. Combine vegetable stock and corn starch over heat on stove, whisking until thickened. Add mustard, olive oil, lemon juice to taste. Salt and pepper. Pour over brussels sprouts. Tasty veggie delights!

-Mama’s Baked Corn-Combine one can corn, one can creamed corn, an egg, a splash of milk, and about a half cup of flour.  Stir in bowl, adding salt and pepper. Put in round 10 inch casserole and bake for about an hour at 350. Corn as you’ve never had it before!

Turkey Day Variation on Meri Christmas Salad- Steam 2 lbs green beans. Place in bowl when cool. Add one can cannelini beans and one cup sun dried tomatoes, chopped. Mix well. In another bowl, combine lemon juice, mustard, white wine vinegar, olive oil, and salt and pepper in proportions you see fit. Pour over bean mixture and toss. Sprinkle with slivered almonds, pine nuts, or pepitas.

Lazy drunken mushrooms- Okay, if all of the rest are deemed too difficult, try this. Put a little oil in a pan. Slice some mushrooms and saute with garlicover medium heat until tender. Just before you take mushrooms out of the pan, splash a quarter cup or so of red wine into the pan and reduce it into the dreamiest of mushroom sides. Drink the rest of the wine while you cook them.

Cheers!

What is your favorite vegetable/ vegetarian Thanksgiving side dish? Do you cook like I do (sans real recipe) or follow them to a T?
