Shop ’til you drop cookies

Well, the weekend sure has been a whirlwind of shopping. Two grocery trips, two trips to the library (different branches of course), and a tour of St. Paul vintage, retro, consignment, and boutique shops today!

It’s not Diagon Alley, but it’ll help me cope over the loss of Swank and Town Talk Diner…

While my mom and I spent a lovely afternoon together hitting

Succotash
Flirt
Up Six
Lula
Everyday People
Allee
A. Michelle

Man-go-round was busy with HIS momma and grandma at

Savers
Second Debut 2
Goodwill

I bought myself a few things and I came home to find a few Valentines Day surprises!

t-shirt from Everyday People, sweater from Up Six

Man-go-round’s finds for me- cashmere from Second Debut 2! Holla!

We must have really been on the same wavelength today, as I owned exactly one pink top before today, and I bought it two weeks ago in California. Now I have two lovely pink sweaters. Thanks love!

Well, enough consumerism. I think it’s high time I show some pictures of the cookies I’ve been talking about for about 3 days now. It all started because I bought some pancake mix that I ended up not liking as microwave pancakes (one of my nightly snacks).

Round 1:
1/3 c pancake mix (mine was Quaker oatmeal pancake mix)
1/8 c pumpkin
few tbsp of water
splash vanilla
cinnamon
about half a bag of hacked up/pounded coconut m&ms
tbsp or maybe two of sunflower seeds

Step 1: Gather materials
Step 2: Mix

Step 3: Drop! Bake! Enjoy!

I don’t know what I baked these at – the oven was on after making a pizza so it was probably 375 or so, for about ten minutes. Delicious!

Round two:
pancake mix, pumpkin, water, cinnamon same
forgot vanilla, so added a few sugar in the raw packets at the end
2 hershey’s kisses for “frosting”- melted in microondas
cookie cutters (if you don’t have mini ones this will only make one large cookie)

time to bake!

cut em out and eat the scraps!

frost the two remaining cookies… yum!
I made these cookies one time since this batch, and am considering making some more when the superbowl is over. I like the softness/ chewiness of them (more like a bar) and the obvious bonus is how ridiculously easy they are (one bowl, some parchment, and a spoon, done!) And you can eat all of the dough you want, since nothing is uncooked (well, I suppose the unbaked pancake mix would make you a bit ill in mass quantities if we’re splitting hairs, but you get my point).

There you have it! A non-baker’s baking adventures. In Minnesota, we use any excuse to use the oven…

Do you have any ridiculously Sandra Lee-esque recipes to share with me?

Tomorrow, I reward my lovely readers/ commenters/ followers with a giveaway! Stay tuned.

Never too old to get "carded"

Nope, this isn’t a blog post about the time I got carded at the Mall of America about their “no one under 16 after 7:00 on weekends” or something rule (I was 23 or so at the time… nice…)

This is a post about card making! We’re headed to a friend’s birthday party in a few hours so I had to run through my card stash to pick one out, so I figured today would be an appropriate day to do a paper-cutting card post!

It’s no secret that I love making cards. Birthday cards, Christmas cards, thank you notes, friendly anytime notes, and more (soon you’ll see how I make Valentines too !) I love using random paper and magazine “textiles” that I can recycle or use from around the house, and cutting and gluing them into gaudy, colorful submission.

In the past 5 years or so, I’ve gone through stages of types of cards I’ve made. The most persistent “theme” thus far has been overlapping collage “snowflakes” made mostly from magazine ads and pretty wrapping paper or other scraps.

Metallic wrapping paper or high-end designer ads from Vogue are probably my favorite, as they are shiny, or pretty, or leopard print…

As you can see, I also went through a phase of magazine petal flowers- a little more girly than the snowflakes, so it makes choosing one for a dude a bit more difficult (my dilemma this evening).

And finally, some Thank Yous. Although this year’s notes were straight up penguins cut out from wrapping paper from a gift someone gave me (thank you whoever you were!), In previous years I was a bit more purposeful. Hence the peacock feathers tied to the note with twine…

My older sister may recognize the flowers on the bottom right note as the front part of the stationary she used to use (I always keep the notes even when I deconstruct other peoples’ cards though!)

So there you have it! Snowflake cutting is zen for me, a craft to do pretty much anywhere. All you need is a scissors and some glue, and some papers to deconstruct.

Do you like making homemade cards or do you prefer the panache of letterpress notes and stationery? Or maybe you like straight up Hallmark cards or e-cards?

Tomorrow I’ll post the cookie recipe I’ve been talking about, and very soon I’ll be doing my first ever giveaway!

Happy Saturday~ Meri

Knotty by Nature (Macra-made in heaven)

Hey y’all. As some of you  may know, sometimes my favorite part of blogging is coming up with these horribly cheesy titles for you to read! Man-go-round called these titles “double face palm.” Whatever.

Speaking of cheese, I just returned from the co-op and am proud of all my “adventurous” new purchases. Ever since trying and eventually loving the lefsa I bought made somewhere in Wisconsin, I’ve been venturing out a bit more! Today’s purchases included some bulk nutritional yeast flakes (I have been meaning to try this for forever but never tried it before), some mochi (maybe for breakfast tomorrow as an excuse to use the oven?) and a new flavor of Kettle Chips- Sweet Onion. We tried them and decided that they are definitely sweet and definitely oniony! Works for me!

I also am in the midst of baking round two of the cookies I made last night. This time I’m varying a few things, and I’m going to try out these little cookie cutters purchased at TJ Maxx a few weeks ago:

I think Babar the Elephant is my favorite!

So by now you’re probably wondering why I’m blathering on about my grocery list and when I’ll explain  the very punny titles…

Thanks to my ever cool and crafty mother, I grew up in the midst of gorgeous macrame crafts and designs. When my mom was a lass younger than I, she took on this then popular, now sort of nerdy hobby and turned it into an entrepreneurial adventure. What she has in marketing, ambition, and social savvy, I make up for in experimenting and not following the instructions!

As with all crafts I begin, I usually choose them as an outlet for stress relief and  something to do while chatting with da man or listening to music (today’s choice is Eric Clapton, Lay down sally in case you’re wondering).

Sure, I’ve gotten a few books from the library, but mostly I’ve just been experimenting making my own patterns. I find macrame incredibly rewarding at this very casual level because I don’t have to count knots/ stitches, etc, I can’t mess it up since I’m in the experimentation stage, and it’s virtually cost free as I’ve been using yarn from garage sales instead of the thick and musky ropes usually associated with this craft.

The results thus far have been a few wrist cuff/ bracelets, a headband, and some chunky bookmarks. But the most important part is how much I like doing it, and that I am reminded of my momma and her giant circular and patterned wall hangings. Here’s a sample of a few patterns I made up.

Maybe one day I’ll expand in talent and scale like my momma. Or even like the giant 20 foot piece I saw at a retro furniture shop in California (but probably not… what sort of atelier would I need to inhabit to house this beast?)

For now, however, I’m “knot” taking it any further than hobby time.

Have you tried knotting crafts or macrame? What do you do to unwind if not craftery?

Happy Friday!

Brace(let) Yourself

Good evening you charming people you! I’ve been spending the evening hemming and hawing over my state tax return (after yesterday’s federal return success I was maybe a bit overconfident) and baking hodgepodge cookies (recipe will be posted another day soon, I’m too lazy to upload pics right now…) but the time has come for something else Made by Meri!

Today’s star could be a gift for a special kid in your life, a funky accessory for yourself, or just a way to kill time and practice some simple kitchen chemistry. Piqued your interest yet?

BRACE YOURSELF!

Toothbrush Bracelet

The “recipe” for this one is incredibly simple.

1. Take a toothbrush (used, please… this is a recycling project above all else…) If you have oral-b that’s the kind I’ve used. I think only certain types of plastic would work for this.

2. Bring some water to boil in a saucepan. You’ll probably need a tongs too, or some waterproof oven mitts or similar tools (anything to keep from scalding yourself)

3. Boil that toothbrush like it’s stone soup. After a few minutes, it will soften and become more pliable. This is when you spastically yank out the bristles, bend the toothbrush to the desired shape, and try not to hurt yourself.

4. Let cool

That’s it, people. The one issue is that you have to make it big enough to fit over your hand. It will bend a tiny bit, but it occasionally will hurt a teeny bit to cram on your hand. Lucky for me, I have hands and wrists once described by some idiot as “tiny little rat paws,” so I can fairly easily get these on. If they don’t fit, then give ’em to a kid!

And now, for your viewing pleasure, I give you a series of pics not yet shared from our recent LA trip! Nighty night!

Paint it Black… and Blue… and Yellow…

I’m getting to be a tougher gal in my advanced age, but today’s walk to and from work was DANG cold! I don’t like to see negative numbers on temperature as I walk by the bank, and I sure don’t like the ensuing static that emerges in my hair from my fuzzy fur Elmer Fudd style hat I wear for the walk.

Thus, I’m trying to “think Summer.” Brother Ali is blaring out of my stereo (why does he always seem like summertime music to me?), I’ve got a dish of cactus for a snack (the heat in this will sure warm me up!) and I’m reminiscing about the Summer of 2009, Fourth of July weekend at my parents’ cabin.

My parents get ideas for projects they would like done around their house or elsewhere, and often they think I’ll have a magic creative solution for them. Usually I don’t, but I try to play along as though I’m some sort of creative genius. In this case, they were hatin’ on the garage window which showed haphazardly strewn storage items and tools.

Project window art was born.

A few trips to the hobby store to select some colors (totally arbitrary, but again I pretended to have a “vision,”) and some masking tape and a ladder later, I was set up for business.

ahhh, to be outside in short sleeves right now…

With the stereo blasting the Stones (hence today’s title) and Peter Bjorn and John, I set to work. The taped sections obviously represent the geometric pattern I created with no prior planning (sorry mom and dad, if I told you I had a vision… once again, I lied…)

I never took a picture of the finished product, but my sister did post this picture on facebook with some clever commentary (I’m sure), and so I do have one of the earlier stages of the project.

The end result included a rust brown color and a tan/yellow hue. The tape was removed, and now the garage is a little bit brighter for all to enjoy. Most importantly, it was a fun afternoon project while I waited until it was late enough in the day to appropriately start boozing.

Hasta Manana Amigos! (If I speak Spanish will the weather mimic Latin America? Worth a shot!)

Stay warm out there-

Meri-Making

Happy February!
Who else thinks that Punxatawny Phil is going to poke his little head out, and before he even gets the chance to get scared by his stupid shadow or whatever, get served with a mad case of frostbite?

Yep, I think we have a bit more winter to go…

On the Meri-Go-Round, however, a new day (Or should I say new month) is dawning! What is the topic for February?

Made by Meri! (and others, as I see fit)

Those of you who know me in “real life” already know that I enjoy a good craft project, a good DIY, or recipe where I can get it. A relentless dilettante in the game of hobbies and leisure, I love to try things out for better or for worse.

What will be included in this month’s adventures?

-Past craft projects revisited, including step by step instructions
-Current projects I am working on throughout the month
-Random recipes here and there, nothing fancy, just fun in the kitchen!
-Habits/ practices I’ve picked up along the way to make your loved ones feel loved!
-Homemade cards and gifts, and how I make them
-Features on fellow craft nerds as I discover them. Want to share something with me? Just let me know!
-“Other”

Now, for something *not* made by Meri… but made by Mom-go-round, in fact, for her birthday this past weekend:

Mucho Gusto, Chocolate Upside-Down Cake! So pleased to make your acquaintance!

To be fair, I did offer up my most crafty/ handy baking skills and say I would make a boxed cake. I can’t imagine why she wanted to make anything else 😉

My momma’s momma has this classic recipe for Chocolate Upside Down Cake, and I thought I would share it with all of you! Now, I don’t usually like chocolate cake (I don’t know why, I just don’t), but one with marshmallows in it and pudding on top? (or bottom, depending on how you look at it…)? Sign me up!

Details:

And if you’re not sure if this dessert will be a hit or not? The proof is in the pudding 🙂

Hope to hear from you all this month during my winter Craftstravaganza!

Bon Appetit!

You better Czech yourself before you Wreck your Checkbook… (Part 2)

Ah, welcome back friends. Where we left off, Bestie Friend and I were in the midst of a whirlwind dream weekend in Prague, filled with Pilsner, Pals, and Panoramas. We had one full day and night left before returning to our respective Madrid and Barcelona homes. What could go wrong?

9:00 (again, times are obviously approximate and made up on the spot)
We stroll out of the Golden Sickle toward Wenceslas square. Today is a bit rainier, and we giggle as we walk by the Astrological Clock again, a FEW hours too early to meet our “friends” from the previous day.

10:00 Wenceslas Square: Crazy woman enlists friend to follow her around square, wordlessly, with video camera. I do not know what language she speaks, as she does not speak, but simply motions and beckons towards different sites, pointing, and then smiling again. Weird…

12:00 Wander the streets looking for Tancici Dum, a.k.a Gehry’s “Dancing House”

13:00 Locate a working mans type watering hole, and get ourselves started on the Pils.

15:00 The River Vltava by day…

18:00 Find a lovely vegetarian restaurant in a more residential area to dine. I eat some delicious risotto, and we plunder on through the rain…

20:00 Vltava at night, with rain:

21:00 Return to Golden Sickle for some cans of Staropramen in our room, with pitas from a grocery store. Kicking around plans for the evening…

22:00 Back to Rocky O’ Reillys. Meet up with friends from previous evening, and make a few more! Hooray, life is so fun!

23:00 Move on to random bar with Ashley Simpson doppelganger waitress, peanut throwing ensues, and characters such as “Canadian,” and “Soul Patch” create lovely entertainment for the evening by being weird. I think we’ve found some Vodka Red Bulls at this point…

Yep, that’s me with the hair as red as the red bull…

2:00 am (next day) Move on to random club called the Roxy. I’m suffering from extreme tiredness, and sit in the corner with new friend, alternately mumbling about school the next day in another country and the horrible music. We eventually leave…

4:00? 5:00? My memory fails me a bit here. One strong snapshot memory survives of David Bowie’s “Modern Love” thumping through a pair of headphones I am wearing as trying to learn how to DJ from some happy go lucky dread headed dude from California. Everyone is from somewhere else here, as in everywhere else. The more you travel, the more you meet people from anywhere but where you are.

I’m dancing, I’m happy, and we eventually are ready to call it a night.

6:00 am? We set an “alarm” before planning a little nap at the G-Sickle. In retrospect this is a completely idiotic idea, as we should have just gone straight to the airport and napped there. Keep in mind, our flight is at 9 am or something, a mere few hours from this stupid nap. STUPID COLLEGE STUDENT AND YOUR STUPID NAP…

9:00 dazed mumblings. Confused glances at the clock and incoherent grunts towards each other (we probably communicated quite effectively this way after so many years of togetherness).

9:06 fly out of G-Sickle with things in hands.

9:08 (we were very close to the metro) jump on the metro with no idea what else to do. Once aboard, we try to figure out how to get to the airport from this train.

9:30 miraculously arrive at airport

9:40 have missed flight. have not gotten through security in time.

9:45 Are at desk pleading for refunds. Denied, obviously, as they don’t give refunds for immaturity and flying by the seat of ones’ pants.

10:00 using emergency credit card to buy new tickets. Oh, next flight is in 8 hours, you say? FABULOUS.

10:00- flight at 6:00 pm or something- wandering airport aimlessly, reading magazines we don’t have the money to buy while squatting in newsstands, and laughing at events of the weekend. The aforementioned bum photos are also taken as a way to cope, as well as action shots of cartwheels, my bespectacled face, and my prancing, dancing friend. Without her, I probably would have been crying

With friends like these, though, you just gotta laugh it off.

So that’s the “Prague-a Saga.” The moral is obviously to stay out all night the first few nights of your trip, not the night before your flight…

I won’t even go into how I missed my connecting flight in Lyon, got stranded overnight there, and got a comped beautiful 2 bed hotel room, 5 course dinner, and real working shower as well as airport transportation. That’s a story for another day…

Until next time, folks… Do as I say, not as I do!

Have you ever put yourself in a snafu like this? Come on, make me feel a little better…

You better Czech yourself- part 1

I’m sitting in Prague’s dreary airport with my dearest friend in the world. We have several hours (7 or 8 I believe) to kill before our rescheduled flight will depart. We have no money to buy diversions or snacks due to recent events, and we have taken to drastic measures to entertain ourselves:

my faded denim what was I thinking bum

my friends’ much more stylishly clad and lovely bum

How on earth did we get here? Why are we taking pictures of each others’ butts for cheap laughs? What on earth has gone wrong?

Rewind, if you will, a mere 48 hours earlier, to our oh so optimistic arrival in the lovely city of Praha (okay, I’m not a local, so I’ll just call it Prague)…

*Editor’s note: All times are approximate, as obviously I was not wearing a watch and/or recording times on my adventures…

20:00 hours- Arrive fresh faced in the airport. Miraculously navigate a metro system in another language and easily find our hostel, the glorious (but I just discovered closed down) Golden Sickle. We throw our crap in our room and head to the

21:00- 3:00 next day- Czechin’ out the labyrinth bar next door, drinking our first Pils of the trip (it was like 5 cents when converted from Koruny for a 20 oz mug or something…)

Next Day:

9:00 Meet our bunkmates as we arise. “YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY” these dumb American Frat d-bags proclaim (I guess they thought we were outrageous for staying out marginally late. We mocked them all day then, but after seeing what would become of the weekend, perhaps we should have paid attention…

10:00- Wenceslas square! The Astrological Clock!

13:00- Walk up giant hill to check out Cathedral. Gaze adoringly at charming red roofed buildings from above. Bask in the land of my Bohemian forefathers…

15:00- Discover hot wine, hot whiskey, hot… everything. Stumble upon random movie set. Stroll good naturedly through family folk festival with dancing and smells of cinnamon roasted nuts

18:00- Mosey on down the Charles Bridge, observing street performers and vendors. Take some dorky photos

22:00 Head to Rocky O’ Reillys, an expat Irish bar where we meet scores of new friends, including some neat ones we plan to meet up with the next day, and some not so neat ones we “forget” to meet at the Astrological Clock as promised…. ooops…

We head home for the night, itching for more adventure the following day, and feelin’ pretty good…

To be continued…
