me and my shadows

Good evening friends! Today was another blissfully sunny and warm day. As we marched between our neighborhood, Whole Foods, Rainbow, and back home again, the sun reflected geometrically across flowers, leaves, and people, casting shadows.

I’ve always been a bit of a sucker for shadowy pictures. I like the anonymity of a shadow, and I like that all you see is the silhouette, the shape, the style.

My shadow follows me most places I go. On cloudy days I forget about her, but she’s there. Here’s a few of the places I’ve taken her!

In the winter, laden with backpack, boots, long scarf

Venice Beach, with many less layers…

Stillwater, MN with man-go-round in tow. Autumn!

You’ll have to trust me that its the same man-go-round 🙂
Manhattan Beach. I love the long shadow of this one.

Pointing at Montezuma’s Castle, Arizona

San Francisco, with the same purse I have in practically
every picture, I’m starting to notice…

…and my favorite. It’s not often you have rain and sun all in one!

In what unique ways do you capture your travels? Do you write your name in the sand or do the “pinch the moon” effect? Any new ideas for me?

P.S. The best thing I bought today at Whole Foods was roasted edamame. Give it a try! I also tried this hibiscus bottled tea, and stocked up on blueberry Clif Kids bars. It was magical.

A little Mer in your Hair

Yesterday was a “good mail” day. Well, a great one. When was the last time you got something so pretty in the mail?

I entered a giveaway a little bit ago from the Etsy shop Brydferth, sponsored by Natalie on her blog. Obviously, I won!

Look at how pretty it is! I can’t wait to transform a messy summer updo into a coral confection with this beautiful hairpin! Thanks again ladies!

And what other little baubles do I have hanging around to adorn my hair and self? Well, wonder no longer…

Headbands from Walgreens. $1 for all three.

Glass hairclip from Hawaii. Thanks mom and dad!

Vintage Brooch. Not for my hair per se, but I suppose I could put it on a hat if I was feeling eccentric.

Rose pin and barrette. The barrette is from my mom too I think, or my Grandma.

…aaaaand finally a relic from the 80s. My sisters might recognize this one! I love anything with a bow icon on it, so I’m sold.

How do you decorate your hair? Or do you leave it au natural? How would you use my new bobby pin?

I spent the day outside with my momma today. We went to the St. Anthony Park Art Fair and some garage sales. It was a fabulous day and I captured tons of new photos for different categories this month. I can’t wait!

How do you enjoy a sunny summer weekend day?

If I only had a heart…

Who is this fella?

He can’t be the tin man… because he has a heart! See?

But what about us poor saps who aren’t sure we have a heart beating inside of us? Or what if you just want to see more love in the world outside of Valentines’ Day? Well, look no further… I’ve found some loooove for you all, because I just like ya!

This one my Pop handed me on a walk tonight! A perfect bleeding heart,
for all of my “bleeding heart liberal” readers. Bachmann, that means you
aren’t welcome here…

Why did this dirty towel dry into such a pretty heart shape? Well, because
of love of course! This find was on University Avenue
These are my favorites- been driving by for years- St. Paul
MN Landscape Arboretum- Chanhassan MN
(yes, the land of Prince…so I hear…)

So now I’ve found all of you lovelies some hearts. But what about if you already have a heart, and just want to take care of it?

Well, these are my tips for a healthy heart.
-Like, relaaaax, man…
-Smile at strangers, unless they are creepy
-drink some wine, dude. Or beer, I hear that works too. Oh, and eat your veggies while you’re at it
-Give your loved ones a break, and they will love you back for it
-Send someone something special in the mail, just because
-Gummy omega-3 vitamins. That’s my excuse, anyway…
-Spend some time with kids. If you DO have a heart of ice, they might help melt it.
-Let the tears out when they come. Enjoy them.
-Fresh air

What are your tips for a healthy heart? (physically, emotionally, spiritually…)?

I heart you all!

Meri-go-rounding

Hey there Junebugs! (too soon? Sorry, I know at least a few of you have had a bit of PTSD over these critters in the last 24 hours… and I don’t blame you. They scare the poo outta me when they “ping” on the screens at the cabin!)

Get ready for the most shamelessly narcissistic blog month topic yet! Just when you thought, “this Meri never tires of talking about herself and her thoughts,” well, now I intend to not just tell, but SHOW you the world through my eyes.

Well, through my photographic lens of an “eye”,” not technically attached to my retina.

What does this mean? Well, when I started this blog I intended it to be a look at how I see things, the places I go, the things I notice, and the beauty I enjoy in the everyday dredge that is “life.” Sure, I have my cynical moments. Technically, they have ahold of the majority of my personality. I do, however, enjoy beautiful things and can appreciate the originality, beauty, and wonder of most things.

Thus, I give you a photo-heavy artsy fartsy explosion of colors, travel, ideas, garbage, and nature. Yes, I said garbage. I happen to find a lot of garbage pretty amazing.

Lost any readers yet?

For this inaugural post of “meri going round” month, I’ll keep it brief. I’ll keep it obvious.

uh, Merry go rounds, of course!

Griffith Park- Los Angeles

Griffith Park again

Santa Monica Pier

Baby Grand- St. Paul. Don’t ask.

Como Park- St. Paul. Who could that be? Anyone recognize her blurred out self….?

So there you have it, although none of these compare to the embarrassment of a carousel scene in “Strangers on a Train.” I laughed, nervously, through that one…

What’s next?
-bridges
-flowers
-the aforementioned garbage
-sunsets
-architecture
-graffiti/ murals
-statues

and more! I can’t wait to show you some of my favorite pictures, and of course to bring you more everyday Meri-style ramblings. Just scroll through them, it won’t hurt a bit 🙂

Cheers kids!

Dot your i’s and cross your thir-t’s

Listmania month draws to a close! I cannot believe how fast May has gone. Never fear, Meri has something b-e-a-utiful planned for the month of June, but I thought I better send list month out with a bang!

First, a photo montage…

Yes, Spring has really and TRULY sprung now! Ahem, now onto the list…

Bucket lists are a bit morbid for my taste, and I’ve always been more of a move towards the target blindly type of gal instead of a goal-setter (why waste the time listing goals, right? Especially when you’re this impatient!) I tend to waffle around not knowing what I want, and then when I figure out what it is, I move towards it full force until it’s MINE or I’ve exhausted my efforts trying.

However, lately I’ve been seeing “30 before 30” and “40 before 40” lists all over blogville. Soooo I thought this might be a way to set my focus on what I want out of life without setting any sort of lofty “goals” out there. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m having so much fun making this list I thought I’d share the rough draft with you all! Suggestions gladly accepted!

Meri’s list she will at least complete WRITING before she turns 30 (t-minus 4 years from now)…

1. Publish something I’ve written. In any publication, e-zine, magazine, book, etc. Man-go-round contests that technically I publish things daily on my blog. I mean something I’ve written that I’ve actually read over. Fiction, people.
2. Road trip with the man-go-round further than one state away.
3. Take a community ed class.
4. Try a new kind of seafood.
5. Grow something. Anything. Flower, vegetable, weed…
6. Go berry picking!
7. Take a train WITHIN the U.S.
8. Complete a macrame project other than messing around.
9 Watch the Godfather series
10. Do a walk/ run for a cause or fundraiser
11. Visit at least one of the following: Rome, Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, or Germany.
12. Return to Madrid and videograph my different, “wiser” perspective.
13. Visit the U.S. SouthEast with my mama.
14. Invent a signature cocktail I consistently enjoy. If not, what’s adulthood for anyway?
15. Read________ (not sure yet)
16. Ride a horse
17. Document more of my family’s history and stories (first on tape recorder, then on paper)
18. Visit one or more of the following: Austin, Boston (rhymes!), Virginia, Nashville, Vermont, Albuquerque, Portland.
19. Attend a taping of a TV show/ talk show/ late night show.
20. finish this list…

Okay….the last one is a joke, but that’s what I have so far! I would love to hear your suggestions for fun things you’ve done, learned, or seen! They can be large or small scale, I don’t care!

Do you make goals or just go for what you want when you see it or recognize it, like moi?

And are you curious about June’s topic or what?

As always, if you’ve made it this far you are the greatest. Thanks for reading and your lovely comments. You complete me.

Me"meri"al Day

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a nice Memorial Day weekend. We spent almost the whole time cleaning our old apartment, but I also scored a few fabulous finds on Craigslist for the new place (and I might add, that in order to avert the almighty “craigslist killer,” I singlehandedly carried my old kitchen table down the stairs out onto the street! Very proud of myself!)

It can be easy to forget what Memorial Day is all about. With barbecues, parties, and the day off of work, sometimes I almost miss the point. I also think, however, that for me it is a reminder to consider those loved ones of my own that are no longer living. How do I do this?

Well, sounds like time for a list!

Meri’s Rememberies

1. Celebrate the loved one. Much like Dia de los Muertos, I like to have a celebration in honor of people I have lost. My uncle passed away on May 5th years back, and now I like to inject a little “cinco de mayo” celebration in his honor. He would have liked it, I think. He was an incredibly fun loving soul! I don’t actually build altars, but I do choose to celebrate in a happy way more than a somber reflection.

2. Photos. I am not sure anyone takes as many pictures as the people in my family do. Long before I was blogging, I had my camera with me most of the time. Looking through these old photographs usually sends memories flooding back to me.

This ain’t even the half of it, people… not even close…

3. Cooking something the person loved. This one is a biggie at holidays- making my grandma Clara’s Christmas Cookie recipe makes me think of her, and its a bonus that its also a tradition that makes me think of my own mama, and she and I can share the memory of her mom.

Christmas Cookies from Clara

4. Talking about the person. Especially the recently departed. Our tendency is to think that it might be insensitive to bring up people that have passed away, but I find it therapeutic to discuss every quirk, habit, memory, and mannerism. I’ve learned a lot about friends and family members from others during chats like these.

5. Quiet time. Spending a little time reflecting makes me appreciate those who have passed on and those that are still with me, reminding me to slow down and enjoy the present.

How do you remember people, whether they have passed away, moved away, or even if you never knew them? Do you think about them more on holidays or do you often stop to think of them during everyday activities?

To beet or not to beet

Does anything stand out in my most recent produce haul?

Red and yellow peppers (on SUPER sale!), cukes, broc slaw, raspberries, melons, squash, onions, white eggplant, radishes…

Wait, white eggplant?

Am I the last dinosaur who hasn’t ever tried this before? I love trying new fruits and veggies when I see them on sale at the store, and definitely when they look ripe and ready to eat.

So, today’s listmania is a list of fruits/veggies I’ve tried that are a bit off of the beaten path, and what I thought of them! My rating system is 0-5 apples.

To Beet or not to Beet- A fruit and veggie quest

Starfruit– I had only had small bites of this until about 3 years ago. I was drawn in by its color and the potential to make pretty salads by cutting it into its’ fancy star shape. Verdict? Fun for the shape, so-so flavor. 3 apples.

Cherimoya– I tried it once in a sample at the co-op, but was scared off by the price. When I finally did find it on sale (miraculous, it is never on sale in MN), I was delighted. A lot of work to eat, but kind of like a sweeter spoonable banana! Try it if you haven’t! 4 1/2 apples!

Golden raspberries– After trying regular raspberries hundreds of times, I thought I’d try the golden ones. Maybe I had bad luck, but they had no flavor or sweetness whatsoever. So, for this particular batch at least? 1 apple.

Cactus– I’ve still only bought it pre-cut, as I’m afraid to cut it off the paddle. But delicious in a spicy salad. 5 apples!

Spaghetti Squash– didn’t try this baby until about 4 years ago. Now its a must have in the winter when nothing else is fresh. Very versatile. I like to bake it and put salsa on top. 4 apples!

Kiwano/ “horned” melon– So cute, I thought. There couldn’t be a gross melon, could there? DO NOT TRY THIS MELON IT IS AWFUL! After my horrible experience I googled it out of sheer disbelief that a fruit could be flavored like garbage. Turns out- others share my distaste. Consider yourself warned- I wish I had been. Negative 300 apples.

Okra. I never tried this until I was an adult, but once I did? Sold. Forever. I’m not talking fried or in gumbo, I mean plain. As a dish of its’ own. I like to put tomato sauce on it for the goo though. 4 apples!

Champagne mangoes– When I picked one of these babies up, I thought “can this be worth it- a smaller mango for the same price?” At first taste… Yes, it is worth it. Just when you think a mango can’t be sweeter? It is sweeter.

Fresh figs. Now, I had dried figs for years before trying a fresh one. I was at a Persian market and they had fresh figs in, so I had to try them. Verdict? Decent, but I’d rather have the dried ones! Maybe if I prepared them in a dessert instead of just eating them fresh from the carton, though. 3 apples.

Baby bok choy– Okay, so not a very exotic vegg, but given my hatred of all lettuces, my greens exposure was pretty much Spinach Spinach, Chard, Spinach, Kale, Spinach, Spinach for most of my life. Then, a few years ago, I thought I’d try this one. While chopping up, ready to saute with some lemon and garlic, I popped a bit of the stalk in my mouth just out of curiosity. Whoa- if its this good raw, I thought, what will it taste like cooked? Just as good, but I’m thoroughly impressed to find any green other than spinach that I will eat raw! 4 apples!

What fruits and veggies have you gone out on a limb to try? Any that are still on your list for a good sale or a rainy day? Do you know a good way to prepare white eggplant?

Happy Summer to all- I’m gearing up for farmer’s market season! (Yes, its not truly a year round thing up North).

The candyman can… come up with anything, I guess

As I devoured half a movie-size box of Nerds at my desk today (thanks to big sis for the random gift!), I got to thinking how utterly strange Nerds are.

And candy in general.

I mean, as today’s title implies, will Willy Wonka and his brethren just take flavored sugar and turn it into ANYTHING? Are there any rules whatsoever in Candyland? I do my best thinking in the shower, so as I lathered up my 27 pounds of hair with shampoo today, I did a little brainstorming about candies past and present.

“I shall imagine every kind of candy and MAKE IT SO!”

Today’s listmania? Categories! I call it: Sugar High or Sugar Why?

Candies with oddly insulting names:
Nerds
Runts
Lemonheads
Cry babies
Airheads

Yes, having the whole rainbow of flavors makes them extra addicting!

Candies with odd names, period:
Twizzlers
Jujubes (love saying this one)
Nibs
Dots
Skittles
Mambas
Lik-maid (a.k.a. Fun Dip)

Candies you could use to market Mad Men to kids:
Candy cigarettes
Candy lipstick
Bottle Caps
Wax bottles (has anyone ever tried these? They freak me out…)

how do you not eat the wax part? gross

Candies that are goin’ places:
Boston Baked Beans
Charleston Chews

Utilitarian Candies:
Licorice rope
Bubble tape
Cotton Candy (hmm, oddly delicious despite a gross sounding name)
Lifesavers

Clothing Candies:
Candy necklace
Candy buttons
Ring pop

anyone out there who hasn’t ingested a fair amount of paper trying to eat these?

Confusing Candies:
Warheads (what the eff)
Sour Patch Kids (were these a riff on Cabbage patch Kids?)
Goobers (why make candy sound so disgusting? Will children eat anything?)
Candy corn (delicious, but looks nothing like corn, tastes nothing like corn..)

So there you have it. Yummy candies, weirdo candies, creative candies, desperate candies… (perhaps it could be a new series like the real desperate housewives… desperate candies…)

What’s your favorite candy? Do you ever think about how utterly weird it is? What did I miss?

Eyes on the Surprises

Last night man-go-round and I went out on a date. It was a “surprise,” so I didn’t know where we were going until, well, we walked in the first place. I used to have issues with “surprises” because I had anxiety about WHAT TO WEAR. However, my go-to move is now a dress, tights, and my skechers. Dressy enough, but casual enough too. Hooray for stupid coping mechanisms!

We went to Stub n Herbs for some drinks, then Punch for some ‘zza!

Mimi, Peroni, Bruni, Fulton

Seven minutes later… Gone-zo! Thanks Punch!

This got me thinking about surprises. I spend my days working with kids on how to deal with surprises/ triggers, good or bad, and how to be more flexible. Some surprises can make your day. Others can make you want to %$*^-ing *$%(^( someone!

Sur-Prizes (surprises that rock)
1. Surprise Parties! The best! Attending, throwing, receiving…
2. Packages or “real” letters in the mail. Hell, even a freebie sample or coupon.
3. When you get to the register at a store and find out your item is on mega-sale
4. Finding unseasonal clothes in storage that you forgot you owned. Hooray sundress buying spree last year- I was so happy to find you when we moved!
5. Money in your jacket pocket from last winter.
6. Finding something funny you made as a kid, or when your awesome sister sends them to you in the mail! (see number 2).
7. When someone sends you flowers
8. Finding a new flavor of a food you already like at the store.
9. When the barista/cashier randomly comps your food. Yess!
10. Finding cash on the ground. My most random place was once finding a fiver at the bottom of a lake at a swimming beach.

Sur-Cries (surprises that suck)
1. Cavities. I’ve only gotten one before, but it was not a pleasant surprise. I felt like a failure at life. Neither is going to the doctor and finding out you have a random ailment you didn’t even go in for (ahem, bladder infection of 2007. You suck.)
2. Leaks in ceilings. Leaks in floors. Leaks in windows. Boo.
3. Being at work, getting called up for an appointment you weren’t aware of. Hello ad-lib!
4. When you reach in for an “m&m” and get a nasty Skittle. Ptoooey!
5. Road closures- although sometimes I end up being happy overall because I find a new route and get to explore. These stink when you’re late.
6. Pimples, rashes, canker sores.
7. Parking tickets, or worse- getting towed.
8. Touching something at a store and realizing it is all sticky. Once I’m pretty sure I grabbed a boogery shirt at F21. It took me a loooong time to return, and now I’m extra careful. Conversely, walking down the street and having things drop on your head. Rain/snow from a tree or building, bird poo…
9. When someone takes forever to cash a check, you forget about it, then one day you have less money in your account and it stinks.
10. Finding a bug, spider, centipede, mouse, squirrel… in your home. Yes, squirrel.

What are some of your favorite surprises? Any crappy surprises I missed? Do you like to be surprised or do you like to know what’s coming?

And most importantly, does anyone else have a great “go-to” outfit for when you don’t know where the day might lead you?
