That’s the "spirit"
Yes, this is only part of it. Variety is the spice of life baby!
Tonight’s drink of choice- man go round’s pick, not my fave…
Gettin’ in the Mad Men “Spirit”…
10. Mojitos! the fresh mint does it for me… I usually like them simple, however Chino Latino does a nice “crack ho mojito” with vials of juice to mix in…
9. Margarita- only on the rocks, and no freakin’ flavors. Not too sweet, good tequila. I’m picky, deal with it. I like these with chips and salsa, please!
8. Vodka Gimlet- hello I’m buzzed! Perhaps the most foo-foo drink I enjoy. Backup is just a vodka tonic, but I am a bit burnt out on these after college. Still.
7. Whiskey, on the rocks. Preferably Maker’s Mark or the Son of James (Jameson). I like Jack Daniels too, but with diet coke.
6. Wine- A nice dry chard, a Spanish red, or a rich Pinot Noir. Or anything from a box. Occasionally even mixed with coke (CaliMOCHO baby!)
5. Sake- yes, its wine, but it tastes different, so it gets its’ own category.
4. Bloody Mary! What’s not to like- tomato, vodka, celery, pickles, olives… a meal in a glass! Divine.
3. Beer- What I drink almost all of the time when I drink.
2. The occasional Martini, lots and lots of olives. Perhaps my own bowl of olives.
1. Bubbly. Champagne, Cava, Prosecco… any sparkling wine will do! I think a little bubbles can brighten anyone’s day. Plus, there is nothing like the feeling after toasting something special.
My S*&% list?
Jagermeister, Malibu, Leinie’s Honey Weiss, Sweet wine, any mixed drink that doesn’t include diet coke or tonic water, most sweet drinks whatsoever, screwdrivers, Long Islands (BANNED!), daiquiris, most “punches”, gin, pina coladas.
What kind of drinks do you all like? Do you have a standard drink or do you suffer from “indecision” like me?

TGI grew out of this…
Before Friends and Will and Grace, before my Nick at Nite phase with Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and I Love Lucy, there were a bracket of TV shows I watched that I like to endearingly call, “crap made for kids.”
Scheduled during the prime after school and Friday evening time slots when kids are glued to the boob tube, these shows on TGIF (ABC), Nickelodeon, and TBS were a genre all their own. Now, I don’t know if it is because the years coincided with my elementary years, or if it was a trend, but the early 90s seemed to be just rife with this junk. To both honor and razz these shows, I’ve compiled some awards…
Back by my perseverating on the past popular demand, I give you:
Crappy Shows I Wasted my Precious Youth Watching:
And the winner is…
Most obnoxious overall cast of characters:
Full House. I’m not even talking about Kimmy Gibler- I loved her. I’m talking stupid Stephanie, Danny Tanner, Joey “woodchuck” Gladstone, Michelle and her stupid high ponytail and dumb plot lines, and of course Steve, the dumbest boyfriend who ever lived.
Most preposterous overall concept:
Alex Mack. Um, she turned into a silvery Capri-sun like liquid at will and was able to do as she pleased? So basically this show just made every kids’ dream into a sort of bizarro reality. I do like Larysa Oleynik though. and her backwards cap.

A rare moment not in mercurial form…
Most abhorrent flip-flopping between silly and “serious” plot lines:
Worst theme song:
Most interesting name:
Boy Meets World for all three. They would vacillate between Sean joining a cult (“serious”) and the “rollercoaster of doom” (silly) at will. The theme song was an abomination/earworm, and the name Topanga is either the best or worst name from this era, I can’t decide.
Best use of the “awkward family” as an overall theme:
Step by Step. The Brady Bunch might have invented the blended family concept, but Step by Step perfected it. I love Suzanne Somers. I love Karen’s squeaky voice. I love the rampant sarcasm, and the fact that it was set it Wisconsin. Hell, I just love this show. Still.
Best pre-teen angst show that no one else seems to remember:
Flash Forward. This one was on Disney, and was about two childhood friends who hit puberty. I loved it.
![]() |
for some reason I could only find B&W photos…
Best lineup:
Sweet Valley High/ Breaker High. I loved this duo- first the twins in their ridiculously awesome outfits, then the ultimate kid dream, again… high school on a boat? No parents? Awesome.
Best conversion of a movie to a TV show:
Clueless. Because it kept most of its original cast, minus Alicia Silverstone. And I loved Amber.
![]() |
The topic is Haiti and she’s talking about some little party!
Show most ahead of its’ time:
All that. Basically a kids’ version/ rip off of SNL, you can now see Kenan from Kenan and Kel on SNL. Weird parallel universe. Whose next on the SNL cast… Amanda Bynes? I’d watch her, she’s great!
Most crush-worthy character:
Randy from Home Improvement! Despite Tim Allen grunting like a constipated bear and Pamela Anderson boobing all over the place, this show was a must-see for JTT, who you’ve already heard me gush about… However, when his voice changed a little of me died inside. At least I have my reruns…
Most enviable character:
Clarissa from Clarissa Explains it all or Sabrina from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Um, it’s a TIE, and they are both played by Melissa Joan Hart… weird…
![]() |
Who but Clarissa could get away with these pants?
So there you have it. Some of the best moments, some of the worst. Good characters, annoying characters, relatable characters. I feel like I know them… sad…
Who did you love to watch? Do you remember this uber cheesy era of TV?

A piece of cake
Not the most creative title, mind you… but after watching a Mad Men episode about Peggy’s birthday, and my utter success baking a cake yesterday, I’m feeling quite the sugar high!
Pineapple upside down cake with coconut topping!
How did I make it?
I sort of invented the recipe, but here it is anyway:
1 box yellow cake mix, prepared
about 3-4 inches of butter (What would that be, 5 tbsp? who knows) melted in microwave
about 1/2 cup brown sugar
One large can pineapple rings in their own juice
rum extract
orange extract/ true orange if you have it
melt the butter in microwave, divide between two pans or one 9×13. I used an 8×8 square and a large loaf pan. Stir sugar and butter around, divided to cover bottom of each pan. Arrange pineapple rings in a pretty pattern. Pour prepared cake batter with rum extract and/or orange extract/ flavoring on top. Bake at 350 for about 30-35 minutes. Cool for 4 1/2 minutes, invert onto plate. DELICIOUS!
These flipped surprisingly easily! I was afraid of pineapple-on-the-floor cake, but I only had to rescue two little pieces of pineapple from caramelized bliss on the pan, and plop them back in their places. the smaller one (a true non-stick pan, I should add) flipped perfectly!
So… in true listmania, I shall list my favorite cakes! I don’t like pie, and I don’t like cheesecake. So cakes and cupcakes are really my bread and butter! You’ll also note the absence of chocolate on here- I like a tiny bit in a cake, but usually I only like more vanilla flavored cakes. So here goes!
Cake-walk down memory lane…
10. The newbie- pineapple upside down rum coconut cake!
9. Carrot cake- but not with the cream cheese frosting. EWWW! This is hard to find.
8. Coffee cake- I like the cinnamon swirl!
7. Angel food cake, with strawberries and cool whip on top!
6. Lemon flavored cake or lemon filling cake
5. Spice cake, especially with ginger frosting
4. Confetti cake, from a box! This was always my birthday cake as a kiddo
3. Banana cake- mommy’s recipe! I think she invented it one time and I forced her to try to remember the ingredients and recipe as we sipped our coffee. I have this version written in my recipe book now, but in her original handwriting. Thanks mum!
2. Gingerbread cake.
1. Vanilla layer cake. I die. True love forever, me and vanilla layer cake.
What is your favorite kind of cake? Or are you more of a pie type of person?

P-A-R-T- Why? well, I happen to have a list…
Today I spent some time decorating for a party we’re having tomorrow…
Yes, that’s Twister
Spring decorations!
Paper and cloth boutonnieres
and it made me think of a very special list. Even more special than yesterday’s 80s/90s toys list.
Parties! Who doesn’t love to party? There are a lot of reasons to get together, and today I intend to count down my favorites.
…because there is always a reason to party…
10. Theme Party– These were super abundant in college. Cowboy/western party, Hawaiian party, Toga party… Golf Pros and Tennis Hos (the shame), 80’s, and more. They are fun, but I’ve had my fill for awhile. Remind me a little too much of a frat house.
9. 4th of July BBQ– But only at my cabin! Swimming, decorating our pontoon float, grilling good eats, watching the fireworks and trying not to light myself on fire whilst I cook s’mores on the fire…
8. New Year’s Eve– Yes, it’s overhyped, but its an awesome reason to get glittered up and wear my lace up black boots. Plus, champagne is definitely a great party drink!
7. Dinner Party– I’m sort of scared of throwing these, but I see them in my future, as domesticity tends to be appealing as I suck at it…
6. Holiday Party– One word- mistletoe. Oh, two more words- gingerbread. cookies.
5. Murder Mystery Party– I have never been to one. Hint hint… someone have one…
4. Halloween– Because everything is more fun in costume. My personal favorite costumes have been Lucy (man-go-round was Ricky), a bat, a flower, and dopey (age 2)
3. Dance party– Sometimes these start out as a birthday party, a theme party, or a general get together. But before long, someone plays the right song and these parties can go all night! See also… Rave, David Bowie, Strobe lights, and ribbon dancing…
2. Ted Danson’s Birthday– It’s an old joke with my bestest friend that whenever we need an excuse to celebrate something we say, “it’s Ted Danson’s Birthday!” Originally, we just wanted to make brownies. As we grew older and out of the house, it became a legitimate party excuse.
1. Birthday Party– You can’t beat a birthday party: Cake, presents, sometimes a special new outfit, balloons, friends, family, and all just to celebrate you. Plus, there’s that wish you get to make as you blow out the candles…
My favorite birthday parties include my 24th at Azia, my 21st which culminated at the Red Dragon/ my front lawn, my 23nd at the crazyd mansion I used to live at, and my younger birthdays filled with ice cream Christmas tree cakes, skating parties, and the “red plate!” My family takes our birthdays pretty seriously, and I have never felt more special or loved than on my birthday!
What is your favorite reason to party? Any great themes or parties I missed that I should try out? I should mention that I purposefully left off grad parties and baby/ bridal showers as well as tupperware/ pampered chef parties. No thanks. I said PARTY, not AWKWARD AFTERNOON…
ahem.
Party on people! It’s Saturday Night!

My grub don’t cost a thing
Since the onset of my blogging life, October of last year, I have been incredibly lucky with giveaway wins. Wall canvases and felt mice, vintage brooches and ink art. Notecards, a bumper sticker, a hamburger pin. Nunaturals. Swanson’s health products. Felt flowers, a bow necklace, a book.
and in the last month, two more tremendous packages have graced my doorstep.
Kay’s Natural Foods sampler package!
Whole Foods gift card!
Thanks to Stacy and Lauren, my grub won’t be costin’ a thing! (at least for a little while longer). I am so lucky to win these giveaways, and plan on hosting another of my own very soon!
In the meantime, however, I thought I’d share a few of my own favorite things to get or do for free (or pretty darn close).
“Freedom Isn’t Free… but these things are”
*ten points for the Team America reference…
1. The Library– A no brainer for me, but I have to sing its praises once again. Books, music, movies and magazines. Travel guides, museum passes, and the internet. Newspapers, maps, pamphlets and tax info.
All these things are free for the borrowing. The solitude I get inside a library? Priceless.
2. Sample day at the grocery store. Or farmer’s market. Or art opening. Or mall. Sometimes I like to go to the ritzy gourmet grocery stores on Sunday afternoon to try all of the goodies. When we were younger we stalked the Pretzelmaker and Dippin’ Dots for free samples. These days, I also harass companies for free samples of things and “like” many an item on facebook in the hopes of procuring more free samples. It adds up, and you never know what favorite you might find next!
3. Freecycle, Craigslist, Freepeats, Citypages, Twin Cities Free Market, Garage Sales. If you play your cards right, you can get a lot of things for free just by being at the right place (listed above) at the right time (usually when people are desperate to get rid of it).
4. Your local curb. Especially if you live near a university or in the months of May and June around these chilly parts of the country, you can get some stellar furniture or appliances just sittin’ out on the curb before garbage day. I’ve scored a pretty great TV and an awesome retro table, just off the top of my head.
5. Survey companies and rewards programs. I take occasional 5 minute surveys to rack up “points” that I can later trade in for magazine subscriptions, gift cards, and more. My old health insurance had a similar program (I miss you Medica!). Borders, Express, and some other stores give free money to use at their stores either on your birthday or a few times a year. You have to be willing to sign up for some junk mail along the way, but that’s what separate e-mail accounts are for, right?
And now, for some free things to DO! Not all of these are free, but I know there are at least a few in each town that are, at least at certain times or days.
-Museums- especially the quirkier ones.
-Gardens and Arboretums
-Zoos
-Explore your own town on foot as though you are on vacation
-Go fishing
-Festivals/ parades/ expos
-Art galleries
Well, that ought to be enough to get us through this dang recession, right? Well, maybe not, but I hope I inspired a little penny pinching and creativity in all of you!
Now it’s your turn- what is your favorite freebie? What’s missing on my list?
-Miser Meri
condimentality
No, its not a word. Yes, I’m using it anyway.
I’d like to move full speed ahead on tonight’s post. It’s about something I hold very dear to my heart. A list that was hard to write as there are so many that I love. And so many I have yet to try…
So obviously I’m not a foodie blogger and these pictures aren’t staged well. Shoot me. My love for the “food group” shall overcome my inferior photography and lighting. Promise.
I’m linking up with Jenn’s weekly “What I ate Wednesday” feature again, and making it “Condiments I will eat on Wednesday.”
I shall call it:
“Condi-meri-ment!”
1. Salsa. Despite my love for some of the following, NOTHING tops salsa for me. On a tortilla with cheese for a late night wrap, with chips, on top of veggies, as a mini-pizza sauce (yes, I do this. and no, I’m not in college anymore. And no, I’m not ashamed).
I make my own and its very chunky. I buy it at the store fresh or canned. I try it at farmer’s markets, I enjoy it at parties, and I eat it like its my job.
Favorites: Green Mountain Gringo, La Victoria, Newman’s own Garden Style, and any chunky salsa with lots of onions.
2. Mustard. Of course this is a very, very, very closer runner up. It lost only because I didn’t like it until I was about 23. I ate it about never until the past few years, now I am MAKING UP FOR LOST TIME! I like it on noodles or veggies with nooch, I like it with pretzels or veggies for a snack, I like it on veggie burgers and french fries.
I even made my own a few times. It was dang spicy but very satisfying.
Favorite: Inglehoffer sweet hot mustard. Bonus? You can save the little jars to put nuts in for a snack in your purse!
3. Hummus- You can make your own, and flavor it with ANYTHING! I mean anything! Bloggers are making dessert hummuses, TJ’s has three layers of it, I’ve made big batches to freeze…
On crackers, on sandwiches, on veggies, as a cold salad base… and protein! winning…
4. Ketchup- Notoriously, a few years ago I came home with friends after a night of “celebrating” and proceeded as usual to the kitchen for a late night snack. I returned to the living room with said snack and thought nothing of it. Later, I would be teased mercilessly by said friends for what they deemed was a “ketchup sandwich” of tortilla +ketchup. Gross. Or maybe not…
I do love ketchup though. Homemade was very fun, maybe even more fun than the homemade mustard! I liked that I could control the sugar and salt.
5. Jelly- Yes, I need to ration out jelly and remind myself that it is not to be eaten with a spoon while the bread is toasting. Strawberry jelly. Grape jelly. Apricot, date, and fig jellies. Mango jelly. Pepper jelly! Apple butter, mango butter, pumpkin butter.
Homemade jellies and jams! I’ve only made enough of this to qualify as sauce, and eaten it immediately, as canning scares me.
The only loser I’ve ever had? Lime curd. Ewwww! I thank my mom for buying it to try, but it was not what I was expecting and Meri no likey.
Runners up: Hot sauce, Nut butters, honey, barbecue sauce, chutney, tahini, wasabi, soy sauce, tzatziki, olive oil
and now for some
“Disappoint-condi-ments” …
-maple syrup- it has to be reaaaaaly good or it makes me gag
-sour cream. meh.
-mayo- never. ever. ever! I do eat miracle whip on occasion though. I like the tangy zip.
-salad dressing- well, I don’t like lettuce, so I suppose that explains why I have no need for the dressing.
-butter- only should be used for baking. Never on vegetables or bread. yuck.
What condiments do you people love? Ones you hate? Ones you’ve never tried?
…ones I should try???

You’re fit but my gosh don’t you know it
If you don’t know this song by the Streets, look into it. It’s hilarious and one of man-go-round and my favorite songs by them. It also reminds me of college, when they were pretty popular.
The title is, however, about more than just my love for cheesy Brit-pop. After a errand full day at Ikea and a new-to-us co-op, I was ready to get outside into what was left of the sunshine, since I had waited for it all week.
I went on a little stroll…
